Wrong, I Think... - SMGSterlin - 12-13-2013 So, was studying some stuff, and ran across this math question... ![]() Now, I'm fairly certain that's not the right answer. The amount of cogs in 14 hours would be roughly 144.62, and 40(31) / 3, which they say is the right answer to this question, does not equal 144.62, it equals 413.33 roughly.... So is the answer they provide wrong, and I'm right, or am I missing something here? Not a homework forum, but I need input from other relatively young high school/post-high school people. RE: Wrong, I Think... - Eduard - 12-13-2013 So in 3 hours mary makes 31 cogs in 14 hours she makes x cogs Answer should be (14*31)/3 which would be 144.(6) // ( wow ) Mathematically, that is the correct answer, but I guess you have to exclude the .(6) so you will have only 144 ( read only the integer part of the number ) because... you can't make like... 2 cogs and a half RE: Wrong, I Think... - Fifty. - 12-13-2013 Replace the 40 with 14. RE: Wrong, I Think... - Omi - 12-13-2013 What Ed said. Additionally, Mary totally isn't a guy's name RE: Wrong, I Think... - Haste - 12-13-2013 Whoever wrote that thing is incredibly lazy. The first word is a typo. Mary isn't a male name. 40 doesn't equal 14. Impressive. RE: Wrong, I Think... - Agmen of Eladesor - 12-13-2013 First off, 40 is not the same as 14, so whoever wrote the test did a piss poor job of editing - which is not a shock. Second, it's a simple piece rate equation for finding a solution, so (31/3)*14=x would give you the answer on number of pieces produced, based upon the normal way of doing things - because in the real world, that gives you the actual productivity of Mary first. In other words, Mary can produce just a shade over 10 cogs per hour - 10.3. That way, you can simply say, well, Mary will work an 8 hour shift today, make her 82 cogs, and it helps you set her goals. Either way, since the only thing in the equation is multiplication and division, it really doesn't matter how you do things - in the order Ed set up, or in the way I set it up, so long as you're doing the same processes, you'll still get the right answer. Which means that no matter what you do, based upon the choices you're given, you're screwed, since 40 is not equal to 14, and has no part in any of the answers. In other words, the test is wrong. RE: Wrong, I Think... - SMGSterlin - 12-13-2013 Exactly... The answer to this question in equation form would be like 31/3(14)... How does a test writer mess up a simple multiplication/division problem? o.o RE: Wrong, I Think... - Deatlev - 12-13-2013 I read how fast dogs would do it. What RE: Wrong, I Think... - Miaou - 12-13-2013 Why does it matter if this person is male or female? Alter all, it's just math. RE: Wrong, I Think... - Tachyon - 12-13-2013 Pretty much everything in there bothers me. And yeah, it's 31(14 / 3) |
