What about an XBox 360 controller? Can it be set up somehow to be used with the game?

I'm not sure why you would want to use a console controller with freelancer, considering it's roleplay dependent and you need to be able to type, but there are ways to set up console controllers with games as long as you find the proper drivers either online or on a disc.

Yeah, you can. I use a program called Pinnacle game profiler that allows you to use any gamepay with any game. And when I say any I mean Any. For Freelancer, it basicly can blind keyboard keys to gamepad keys.
(pinnacle is not free, unfortinately. I use a pirated version. If you want the goods poke me on skype)

Personaly, I use a gamepay only for Turret steering. Like so.
Might not be the ideal setup, but I prefer a gamepad joystick over the up/down/left/right (or WASD) keys for TS.
