Press Ctrl + V. That should put your ship in cockpit veiw. Happy... whatever your doing with it!

I always get dizzy after 3 turns in cockpit view...so it's not really usable.

Decent for professional looking photos though. Cuts out the ship 'n all, so it looks like it's been taken by an onboard camera. Does magic for filmintoo.

Cockpit view also can affect:
1)
Docking...usually better for trade lanes, worse for exiting stations.
2)
Aiming...some guns aim better (some muzzle flash is disorienting/blinding).
3)
Turning/Strafing...not completely certain but it does seem in some cases with view on to decrease turn/strafe slightly.

I happen to use it all the time. Certainly when trading and speed docking. Asteroid fields are no match for my precision piloting skills! O_o

I would use it, but the flashing of the guns is hard on the eyes.
And are you talking first person, or where you can see a bit of the interior of the ship.
