Freelancer and building/construction - tothebonezone - 01-19-2014 So with the onset of Nanobots, advanced robotics, and programmable artificial intelligence... What is building and construction like in Freelancer? Do skyscrapers rise up within days or weeks instead of months and years? Are there automated drones working day and night, doing what humans can't? Are nanobots rapidly fusing the metal skeleton of said structures together in a manner far more rapid than say, welding? What do you guys think? I've been getting a bit more curious about this as time goes on, and I just have to wonder how fast someone could build something on a planets surface. Prefabrication on massive scale would permit rapid construction of buildings from standard templates, but specialty facilities would still require more time and effort. Essentially, there's no reason why construction technology couldn't have advanced significantly in ~1000 years. Automation would drive labour costs down, but materials costs would still account for a signifigant portion of capital costs. Thanks Max RE: Freelancer and building/construction - Druen78 - 01-19-2014 Basically, engineers in Sirius are 3D modelers: they make a virtual project of the stuff you want to make, then the nanobots "print" the project in solid materials. While this certainly accounts for an overall faster construction, an added cost might be found in the adequate "formatting" of the materials so they can be easily handled by the nanobots. So, extremely pure metals, flawless alloys, perfectly controlled temperatures, etc. |
