A call to end the rule lawyering/badgering - Fletcher - 08-11-2008

From what I gather, people are lawyering/badgering people about the rules of the server and use them to effectively blackmail or force people to do what they want so they don't report them.

This HAS TO BLOODY STOP. We as a community WANT more people to join, new people join and are usually unaware of the rules, I went there, I mean I followed Mon'Star in a goddarn Starflier and taking his Cruiser Commander loot for money on my first day here. And I didn't know a darn thing about RP. Now look at me.
I believe I have evolved into a decent RP'er and I pray a good member of the Discovery community.

I have reported a few people for simple mistakes without talking to them, I kinda regret that. Some people even use them to 'force' them to do things I hear on the horn.

Members of Discovery I ask you, please, give people the benefit of the doubt and let them 'merge' into the community before you ban them by reporting them. I am lucky to get this far.

Message them about it BUT DO NOT BE HOSTILE ABOUT IT!!! We can't afford to push people away in the evolving gaming community, there are new games slowly sapping our members away and EVERY NEW MEMBER must be treated with respect an patience. Shouting at them for breaking the law is just a bit forgive me, total jackassary.

We are not a police server, we are an RP server. Respect that or go play Halo 2.

Sigh, I hope this message rings throughout Discovery.

EDIT: In case you are wondering I am NOT A VETERAN of this server, I still consider myself a newbie on here, despite my somewhat 'large' post count.

I know some people deserve to be banned, like modders and jackasses on the system chat, but by purely banning them outright we may be pushing away real good contributors to the community.

I think we are slowly becoming a Closed Society. Not completely but in the way some people handle the rule side of the server. Let them merge into the server before banning I beg of you.

From what I hear ... blackmailing a player who has broken a rule is a rule violation in itself.

I have no proof, but its what I heard on the grapevine. Whether its true or not I don't know. I hope it doesn't happen though, at all.

I made sure me and my boys knew and were familiar with the rules before we got here. But yeah, I hear what you're saying - you have no idea how many traders threaten to sanction me if I pirate them. I laugh merrily while blowing their ship out from under them, while they scream bloody sanction. I laugh merrily because I, unlike them, know the rules, and know that I won't get sanctioned just because I'm pirating a Zoner. I also laugh merrily as they come back in a ship for revenge, which underscores their ignorance.

What I've gathered is a huge lack to listen to reason. I PM them telling them that what they're doing is wrong, but they don't listen. I know, because I've dealt with it - they care more about 'winning' than they do about fair play, and in the end they don't win. They either get sanctioned, or at least blown up by me.

All in all, I find it funny what traders will say to get out of being pirated. I, again, just laugh and blow them up as they try to rules lawyer their way out of it. After telling them that they're wrong, and seeing them verbally abuse me by way of thanks, I see why sanctions are oh so necessary.

Traders metagaming (is that the right term?) in this server can be annoying.

I admit I get VERY frustrated when I lost a fight or get pirated. When I get pirated, ask ian, I fight back with all the firepower I have. And when I lose, I usually log off and take it out on Halo 3 for a few hours, negating the 4 hour 'ban' from the system.

Only once have I reported out of slight anger, but it turned out to be justified. Thats a story for another time though.

Traders, your hear to make 'virtual money and virtual victory. This is a game, not REAL money is won. Getting angry is childish in trading. I admit to being a bit childish when I get agrry after being blown up, but I have never yelled in game. I have at my monitor though.

For the record, I found Tequila quite RP in his piracy...the thievin' dawg.

Threatening blackmail is a violation as an admin stated so in a post some time ago--though I don't know the thread. in the sense, you set up getting victimized intentionally to "collect".

The system channel "//ooc rule lawyering MUST stop" and the biggest ones guilty of it are often ones who have been here longer. Seems they feel it doesn't apply to them.

I pm other than the briefest of comments such as "//private please" when people start to argue.

Handle it as RP, go PM or go Sanction--those are your ONLY choices.

Yes ... if you dig far enough you'll find several sanctions for just such instances.

I believe this would fall under Rule 3.5 which reads as follows:

Quote:3.5 Attempts to pose as admins, threatening players with sanctions, attempts to interpret rules are not allowed. Applying to admin's name without prior consent of the admin is not allowed.

Well I can sort of understand 'veterans' feeling immune to the rules. I made that mistake and Xoria hammered me into sense. And I thank him.

I take it into private comms or I don't bother. I'd rather annoy one person than the whole system. Personally if I try to RP it, it NEVER works. I just argue with them in private. If they not like it, their problem for not understanding.

It'd be nice to some posts in here from some Veterans of the community.
