How can we make Discovery better? - Lythrilux - 05-03-2014

To say disco isn't dying is pure ignorance. There's a lot less players on the server, forum activity has decreased and people are leaving like no tomorrow.

Rather than keeping silent, I'd like to ask: "As a community: Developers, Forum Staff and Players; what can we do to stop the mod from dying, or at least prolong it's life for longer?"

Discuss.

So I'm editing this post and the topic of discussion in light of the resurgence of players on the server.

So, how can we make this mod better? Sure, logging on and actually playing is a part of keeping this mod alive, however that can only work to a certain extent.

Therefore, as a community as a whoke, what can be done to improve this mod? (And to prolong it's life).

Lets decide via poll the most suitable hours (UTC) for playing, and try to move in schedule FL time to that hour.
I think that this way we might force peak hours.

All we need is to gather the information about the main free time hours of people, to make an interval of peak activity, or separate hours of activity, at which other players might orient at. Basically, I propose a scheduled (sure thing, not strictly) gaming process to ensure high population at certain hours.

People have been leaving disco for years and years, that hasn't changed a bit since I've been here. What's changed is the amount of people who come back, and the amount of new players.

FL is a 12 year old game, people simply don't play it anymore, it's gotten boring. They've moved onto newer and better games, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Disco is going to die no matter what you do, only thing you might do is keep it alive until 2016, instead of it being dead in 2015.

*shrugs*

Listen to what others want, in that case, the majority, dont be so harsh on players like Kaz mentioned in a Sanction thread earlier.

If people dont like a change, dont force it on them. If the change does come through, be prepared and accept what the community can respond to that change, either they give positive or negative response. If majority of them feel the change is unwanted, or hampers their playing experience, accept and reverse the change instead of reasoning that we spent hours to get this change into existence. A change is not beneficial if that does not appeal to the playing populace of this community. And it can never be called a growth wise change.

Think what the people want. Ask the vets, as to what will make them feel better here, as it did, in the previous versions. Keep the admin and mod processes a tad more transparent, so, the ones that might be raising issues against the working of the hierarchy, can think before doing so.

Most of all, ask yourself this, "What made this mod so fun, and one that everyone can enjoy. What is this mod missing? What changes affected their (the ones who left apart from RL issues) experience, if not drastically and at the very instant, but gradually. What can be done to restore the fun that this mod was, some time ago?"

I cant find answers to this, as I have been around only for a couple weeks in 4.85 and started playing only after 4.87. The ones who have been here for a long time, ones that left due to some issues and got bored with the mod. What was their reason. An analysis maybe. And subsequently, something that the mod/dev/admin team can do with that analysis. There are guys who have been out of Disco, but are still skype freinds of many guys who still play here. Ask them, what made them log in and put so much time into this mod, during their time.

Maybe, the LN-RM raids, the sair raids on Bretonia, OC-Sair fights, BHG pews. Something might come up, and we can find something that hampered all this fun, be it Jump devices, buffer systems, an unwanted base in an unwanted location or some X faction getting access to some Y things. Something that has affected this mod negatively, the fun part of it, not the lore part of it.

Afterall, games are played for fun, and if this game isnt fun anymore, there are a buttload of games that are available in the market. So, to keep this mod alive, and atleast to get the remaining members to stay put along with new additions, think of ideas that can make people play here, instead of an X game in their computer. Make/ Bring back/ Delete/ Reverse some changes that made this mod, a great one to play in, worthwhile to put effort and spend time, like the one it was, some years ago.

RE: How can we save this mod? - Eugen - 05-03-2014

well problems "I" have seen are:

Less to no ingame explanetion for new players.
They are dumped into the game on pensyilvania or respecktable restart´s system with a small ship and some money and have no clue waht do do this leads mostly to frustration.

very restraining in rules /id´s
Were they can fly and land and so on. also in some cases the policeing faktions give players a hard time to do anything because of to much roleplay
(ironical i know but for exemple i have sometimes a hard time to get from newcastle to the leeds jumphole in new london because every time someone comes and says i cant come with a cap into the system the alternative would be to tau 31 shure but have u tryed it with a cap ship?).

i hope this 2 points have a use for the discusions. ^^

Advertise and post it in your facebook/twitter page. The social networks are a powerful tool - also, do your bit of share and post it on different forums you regulary browse.

Edit

Oh and people who can't forgive other people, or incapable of understanding that some people dont wish to rp all the time, and sometimes doing dumb things is actually a good thing.

RE: How can we save this mod? - HassLHoFF™ - 05-03-2014

It isn't dying and for sure it also won't help allways to say it dies...cause it simply implies something wrong to a new trial...It's like apple itself would say...geeks our hardware is not good (even though this is fact). reflected to this it means to a new player: "why should i join a dying community/mod." We have a lot players and the mod is still good visited. Let's just focus on the stuff that we all do the whole time...RP, trading, Mining, PvP and improve and further develop all this.

RE: How can we save this mod? - Jack_Henderson - 05-03-2014

The last round of attacks that led to server instability have taken a heavy hit on Disco. Undeniably.

I am not sure about how to recover, to be honest.

First I would say: Keep cool, just enjoy the game. Log and have fun.

However, I found it hard to have fun when you hardly ever meet anybody and organised actvity is hard to get. Flying on a server with ~50 players with like... 100 systems is a problem.

I think what Disco would need is "something new", "something crazy". Something that would make all of those who faded away take another look.

But: We do not have the Devs to do that. There are 2 at the moment. They have their limitations. And we - the community - have been treating them badly forever. Expecting miracles is not realistic.

I would advocate:

> trimming Disco to fit lower player counts, by
> focussing on main systems (House main systems, Alpha, Gamma) as selling points for goods.
> focussing on activity hubs (ore systems)
> cutting out unused systems (like it was done with Orkney that you can pass by now via gate).

It needs to be streamlined, focussed on the essential part of interaction.

Another idea would be:

Do a time jump. 50 years in the future.
And present the continued storyline, but not in small steps but with some big development step. Let factions say where they want to be in 50 years. Something like that could make people go: Okay, let's look!

Being totally realistic... I doubt that this huge task can be taken on. It is an old game. It has a dwindling player base. Fighting to recover it at this stage, investing tons of energy... wow. I want to see those who take that part on successfully.

I'll see you in space. I still try to fly once per day.

I think the Dev team needs a bit if an overhaul in terms of what direction they develop the mod in. In order to make disco successful, the link between player ideas and Dev implementation needs to be established.
