For export: Milkshape (cmp, mat exporter plugins), HardCMP, UTFedit, ObjToSur converter, FL model tool.

Most of this could be found in the archive: http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/downloads/fl-tools
Model itself could be made in many different ways. I am currently learning Blender.

This is what I wrote to Scumbag:
Quote:For models export: Milkshape (whichever version works with .cmp exporter 2 or 3), HardCMP (for hardpoint edit); FL Model tool (For resize, but only the model with no hardpoints, else they will be onto wrong positions after resize).

For materials: Milkshape + .mat exporter, UTFedit (for editing flags, to make texture emit light (windows, etc.))

For hitbox: Milkshape (Original model is subdivided on parts, these parts are regrouped, then convexed (convex tool), then model is exported as a set of convexed groups in .obj format (As a single low-poly model)), Obj to sur converter ( .obj model is being converted in two clicks in the hitbox .sur file), FL model tool (You resize the hitox after the model file to "tie" it to the root of the ship, otherwise collision might not work in game).

Later on, I will compose an archive of needed software (FL tools has many things we don't need) and put it on the dropbox.

The best thing that you could do is to write detailed fool proof tutorial.
It should include all steps from starting up to the in-game model implementation.
All of the needed software should be listed as well. Such tutorial should allow everyone that is interested in modelling to do their own thing.

This will be included with the software pack.

This would be great.
Most of the people that have motivation to do something quickly loose it if they does not have easy access to the tools needed to get the job done.

What program do you use to model a ship?
