Crossover cable - Strichev - 05-17-2014
Since my in-network transfer speeds are limited by 100 mb/s LAN, I need a faster way of transferring files between computers. No, sadly I don't have an external drive as of yet. To mitigate or even circumvent this limitation I've made a simple crossover cable. Unfortunately a most irking error rudely invaded my existence.
"0x80070035 the network path was not found"
Both PCs detect each-other, leading me to believe the cable itself is fine. What should I do?

what OS you got
best thing to get is a cheap router doesnt have to be connected to the internet
just connect both upto it through cat 5 cable (ethernet NOT cross over)
go into each computer and go through the network setup wizard (if xp)
create a few shared folder and you should "see" each other in the "my network places"
and make sure network sharing is on
if its win 7 they should by default detect each other
win 7 by default has a "public" folder which you can use to share in between

Transfer speeds using the method you mentioned (straight through cable and a router) resulted in appalling speed of 10 MB/s. Transferring 200 GB would take ages.
Anyhow, I managed to figure it out an hour or so after I had posted this. I had to manually configure static IPs on both computers.
Apparently Windows 7 doesn't resolve actual computer name to valid IP or something like that; it has to be set up manually.

then you got dodgey cables
but using a router is far faster than an ext drive transfering from 1 to another

Dunno man, now that the crossover cable is working fine (scavenged from the same cables that are connected to the router), I have no such worries any more. Transfer speeds are limited by writing speeds, just the way I like it. (insert appropriate smiley, probably
)

Grab two Gigabit Network Interface Cards & some Cat6 Cable, install the cards into both, direct line the two together through the Cat6 cable--problem solved
Note that you may need to create a network shared folder to transfer said files between the two, but this should increase the transfer rate a little

Don't bother at all to spend money and setup cables if it is one time deal.
Set the transfer remove the auto-sleep function on the PCs, go to sleep and see it done at the morning.
If it is not one time deal buy proper network switch or proper router with gigabit transferrate.

My emergency porn collection important data transfer protocols require fast transfer speeds. (not really)
As a side note, the cable was scavenged from a uselessly short ethernet cable. The specialised tools are eternal. I have a policy of not saving money on tools. Because once you have one such item, it lasts. For years, decades in fact.
