Are there Rules for "Trial by Forum" - FynnMcScrap - 06-07-2014

As I was marked for Trial,
I tried to find the rules.

I found this :
http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=2334 ( Server Rules )

and this :
http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=107662&highlight=trial+by+Forum ( Chokolatemilk )

However , so far I have found no description of the Trial practice ?

How so ?

There is no Trail by forum.
Its what we call when a member starts posting what happend to him on the forums for all to see instead of writing a Sanction report to the Admins.

Admins dont allow Trail by forum i.e let someone post someones name and have the community judge his actions.
Only Admins can do that inside closed doors and decide if the person really did do something wrong.

So a discussion or stating an opinion is frowned upon, as in the past there was to much flaming ?
I thought that´s what ooRP Forums are made for.

More and more it seems that the community is also more fragile than I thought.

Hm... I´ll think about the implications.

Common sense.

Yeah, say if you want to describe a situation that happened to you or a friend, and want opinions about the application of rules, just take out the names of who was involved so we can have a somewhat unbiased look at what happened. If its for a simple rule clarification, doing that is ok. Once you get your feedback, and really feel a rule was broken, you can still file a sanction report. It it seems the rules were followed, then maybe it saves you from filing.

Basically don´t use names when you write on forum about specific situations when you mark somebody as the bad one (bad behaviour, breaking rules etc.). Reason is that very often people provide only one-sided or even changed information so the marked person is judged by community by this incomplete or faked information.

Basic rules are:

If you think somebody broke the rules, submit sanction report with evidence to admins here.

If the bad behaving person is member of some faction, use their feedback channel of official factions here or unofficial here if they have one to report it to faction leader (but again, don´t use actual names on forum!). Usually he asks you to send name via PM.

If there is something bad generally (for example situation about RP needed prior base destruction) what you want do discuss on forums, you are free to do it. You can even give example like situation what happened to you with your base. But again, don´t use names.

No, discussion and opinions are perfectly fine.

Trial by forum however is not ok, it involves people making a decision who: may want to grief other players, may not have all the facts or chose to ignore some of them, may be biased in certain scenarios and who do likely not follow any policy about deciding who is innocent/guilty.

These factors make a recipe for disaster that could negatively impact on someones time here unjustly.

Trial by forum means pointing out specificaly one or more persons or a specific incident and badmouthing him/her/it.

Trial by forum can cause some of the following to occur (From the Rules):

1.1 Use of abusive, vulgar, obscene or racist materials
1.2 Trolling or harassing other members of the community
1.5 Libel, defamatory, threatening materials and any law-violating materials
1.7 Metagaming* and/or powergaming** to gain a roleplay benefit for factions, groups or individuals

2.2 Threatening other players with reports and sanctions or attempting to pose as an Admin is not allowed.

Also, it might compromise the Administrators obligations when dealing with the case:

To ensure work of Discovery Freelancer server.
To be fair and treat all players equally, independent of their level and faction alignment.
Not to mix server roleplaying with server administration in any way.
Not to ignore any cases of server rules violations that are reported.

----------------

Trial by forum can cause more harm than solutions for the problem exposed, and that's why moderators try to keep it out, to prevent subsequent infractions.
