Opinion Poll - Australian Discovery Server - fearvector - 07-04-2014 Now i would like to start by saying this is not about a new server at-least not yet. This is just to see how many people would be interested in playing on a Australian server if one was started. Main reason i ask this is because i have grown fed up with the latency i get on the other servers and as far as i can tell since my old server went down we no longer have an Australian server. Now if i find there are enough people interested in this idea i may start one up. There is also another component that may need to be met before i am able to make a server, witch would be due to i am a little financial tight on money i would need folks willing to help with the cost of renting the server (VPS). Now i would not expect this support to go unrewarded as any on willing to help with a share of the cost would receive full admin rites and ability to Co-manage the server . So at the same time as i see how many people want / would play on this server i will be taking down a at this time no commitment list of names of any one willing to help with the cost. I have done some moderate research up to this point and upon commitment i would do even more to get the best service and price. What i have done so far shows that it would cost about $35 - $50 a month based of server performance. I hope we can make this as a reality as i would really like to get back into discovery full time again as the only thing stopping me at this point is the latency. RE: Opinion Poll - Australian Discovery Server - KellyR - 07-14-2014 I didn't vote because while I wouldn't play on it (very high ping for me, plus I have a full plate with my own server), I don't want to discourage someone from starting a server. But I see an issue here that might cause you some headaches. Giving admin rights to donors is good in theory. In practical application, it's not so good. Someone could donate and then do a lot of damage with those admin rights. I'm not talking about bringing the server down, physically, but they could play favorites, give people extreme amounts of money, ignore rule violations for their friends, etc. Giving players a whole ton of money for free encourages boredom just as much as having the economy so tight it takes months just to buy a gunboat. Favoritism is always frowned on by regular players and will cause people to leave and not come back. Not enforcing the rules will do the same. If you are going to do this, I would suggest you find a way to reward players that doesn't involve elevating rights. An example would be, give them 1 SD (Server dollar) for every $10 they contribute. Then they can buy special admin ships (like the barge, thor, Necrosis, etc) with SD's. You would then assign a SD value to each ship you wanted to sell. This does require a bit more work with record keeping but it could save you major headaches. These figures and SD are only examples of course. You'd probably want to come up with your own. Hope this helps. Kelly |
