Hunted and the Haunted, Part I - Saerieve - 07-26-2014

Hunted and the Haunted

"One man can make a difference", they say, but at what cost, I ask. Never thought it to be easy, never expected it to happen over night, but the sheer amount of idiocy and hypocrisy is repulsive. Everyone looked at it as a one-man war against the whole world, everyone laughed and said it was a good joke, and it did start to feel that way after a while, but not anymore. Now it is nothing other than a one-man war against humanity itself and its very nature; A war I never asked to be a part of, and a war one man cannot possibly win on his own, or even fight on his own. The lies we try to fight, are the same lies they've spoonfed us as a child, and when the fight is lost, nothing but dignity is sacrificed.

The world is in no shape or form perfect. Never thought it to be, never expected it to be. It's far from it, and becoming worse by the second, so it was nothing but naivety that made me believe one man may survive such a fight, even if he just wanted the world around himself to be a better place, without giving a damn about the world anyone else lives in, wants to live in, or fights not to live in. Perfection's thought to be an absolute term, but only on paper. Out there, it's as relative as a term can get, so compromise is the one lacking element in the fight I've found myself involuntarily fighting, and an effective compromise is the only thing needed to win.

What makes compromises in each situation unique, is the opportunities providing them which are often mere coincidences and rarely part of the plan, and that's why only those ready to take risks are the ones able to use those opportunities properly and end with compromises in their favor, rather than in favor of the elements providing the compromise, and that's the key in getting out of any major mess without having to end in an even bigger mess right afterwards.

The Maltese nation had been going through a rough time, it had gone through a civil war, it had lost important people. And then, there was an experiment that only a small number of people even knew about. An experiment gone wrong.
The aftermath of said experiment could not be solved by Maltese citizens, none of them should ever know about it.
And so the Maltese used their contacts, searching for people that have proven to be trustworthy elsewhere, but also people that do not have any ties within the Maltese nation.
The number of possible contractors was small, the number of those that could be taken into further consideration was even smaller.
Some time passed and the decision was made, the Outcasts contacted a person that had done a good service for the Blood Dragons.

It was easier the old days; Working for the Dragons, having access to their resources, facilities, pilots. I could have eyes and ears everywhere, tracking wasn't a challenge. But now they're gone and so am I, no longer in known territory, out in unfamiliar sectors and prone to prying eyes. I've never let my guard down, because I never should, and that's exactly what's exhausting me the most. They used to give me a name, or a face, and I used to track it and put it down, man's yet another animal after all. But nothing's the same anymore, no one's calling the shots, and I'm on my own out in the open. Constantly exposed, vulnerable.

Tau 37 - Bermojo Cloud

The search for the person in question had started not too long ago, obtaining information about his whereabouts had made more than one Zoner a much wealthier person, but the information was worth the expenses.
There it was, a Katana drifting through the nebula, the Outcast vessel came closer, unlocking its guns, preparing for the worst.

The pilot started to speak "Saerieve, there is someone that would like to meet you. Will you listen to my superiors proposal?" What followed was a short period of silence.

RE: Hunted and the Haunted - Saerieve - 07-26-2014

Outcasts have never been a threat. They like to believe they are, but they're no better than the Corsairs they so adamantly despise. They like to tell themselves they're better, but then again... Doesn't everyone?

"I have no business with you or your superiors. I don't care if you want to waste your own time, but stop wasting mine." It was time to cruise off. Yet another chatty mouth around was the last thing I needed right now.

RE: Hunted and the Haunted - Jansen - 07-27-2014

The pilot was a tad bit surprised, however, this was what he expected, this was what the Zoners he bribed had told him to expect.
"Stop there for a second Saerieve, stop and listen what Im about to offer you." The man was glad when he saw that the other ship did not instantly move away. "My superior wants to offer you a task, one that only you seem to be able to fullfil. We have heard from your work with the Dragons, we have heard that you appear to be a trustworthy person. What my superior is going to offer you, is something that has no been offered to anyone outside the Maltese Nation before, so I can only suggest you to listen to the proposal."

RE: Hunted and the Haunted - Saerieve - 07-27-2014

Another self-righteous bastard promising heaven, while stuck in hell himself. "What makes you think you have anything at all to offer that would interest me? Now bugger off." The gut feeling never lies, and my gut's telling me this one's nothing but trouble, but I try not to shoot Outcasts. If this one has even half as much times to their 'superiors' as he claims to have, shooting him and of course as a result killing him would make flying in damn too many places too big of a pain for a while until they forget, which they will, but only with time.

RE: Hunted and the Haunted - Jansen - 07-28-2014

The pilot smiled, he had been warned that persuading this person would be hard, but that didnt change anything about its usefulness for the nation. The time had come to push his luck. "It must be comfortable to live in a ship, with no home to go to, with no friends to talk to. But if you arent willing to listen to my superiors proposal that wont change. Guess we made a mistake when we thought you were the right one for this, either you have changed a lot since your time with the Dragons, or the stories were nothing but gossip. Either way, I wont waste any further time with this. Meet my superior at Bastia Station if you decide to take this chance, you have one day to make up your mind."
Having finished the pilot powered up his cruise engines and disapeared as swift as he had appeared.

RE: Hunted and the Haunted - Saerieve - 07-29-2014

Been here before, once, a long time ago. Nothing's changed. Still the same dump it was back then, and still filled with a hoard of Outcasts being overprotective over nothing, or even worse - over a dump. They wanted me to come here, but gave me no name to ask for, but then again, if they had enough influence to actually manage to track me down, they have enough influence to know the moment I landed on the base, so better not leave the docks. Sooner they find me, sooner we can get this over with.

Bastia Outpost - Surveillance Station

An older men, somewhere in his sixties monitored the screens in front of him, until the ship they had expected arrived. As soon as it came closer he enabled the docking algorithms to work, so that the pilot could land. Once the ship had landed he proceeded to contact a different person via the bases internal comm system.

Bastia Outpost - Dockin Bays - 10 minutes later

The docking bays doors opened and a women moved through, she wasnt big, nor what you usually would describe as attractive, but the way the other people in the docking bay tried to escape her view should have been more of a sign that this person was nobody you wanted to anger.
She moved closer to the newly arrived ship, where its pilot was sitting, apparently waiting for her arrival.
"You must be Saerieve, correct? I would have expected a bit more of a man, but apparently you have proven your worth for others, so Ill give you a chance to prove your worth for us. Considering that you are here, I take that you are interested in the proposal, which is just the way it was planned."
She looked at the pilot once more, not a single bit of emotion could be seen in her eyes. "My name is Emilia Zito, I am currently tasked with running this place, before I tell you what this is about, a little warning, make sure that you dont forget that you are exchangeable as long as your task has not been finished, be sure to keep a low profile and dont cause me any trouble." A slight sign of grinning could be seen for the blink of an eye before her face went back into the usual emotionless stare. " Did you understand that?"
