Bretonian Armed Forces - BAF Admiralty Board - 09-09-2008

Information Board

Command Structure

The Bretonian Armed Forces have long been commanded by the admirals of the Admiralty Board, a group currently comprised of the four admirals of the planetary fleets of Cambridge, Carlisle, New London, and Sprague and the ten admirals of the great fleets, who currently each command their regions.

The group formerly met under the purview of the Monarch, who maintained a full third of the vote as well as veto power. The Admiral of the Fleet has replaced the Monarch's position on the Admiralty Board, and therefore now enjoys the voting and veto privileges previously enjoyed by the Monarch.

Support and Supplies, and Trading Restrictions

Since its formation in the year 310, the Bowex shipping corporation has almost exclusively funded the BMM construction of BAF warships, and the nationalization of these two companies have historically increased the prosperity of the Bretonian public in comparison to the other Houses by reducing the strain placed on the public in the form of defense taxes.

Exemptions to trading restrictions are granted by the Bretonian Police Authority, but there is an application process, and a fee. Violators of this embargo shall simply drop their cargo, or be destroyed.

Position of the Queen

Queen Carina for a time enlarged the Monarch's martial power, beginning with a general increase in the exercise of the veto, using her influence in the legislature, and exercising direct command authority over Her personal Guard, the Royal Fleet. In time, Queen Carina's Royal Fleet surpassed in strength any other Bretonian Armed Forces Military unit.

Today, the Queen is the figurehead behind the Armed Forces, and the Minister of Defense, and through him Parliament, in word and deed controls the Armed Forces.

However, the traditionalist streak in the Armed Forces is a wide one, and because of this, the Crown does in fact still wield tremendous power over the Royalists in Parliament, and over the Officer's Corps of the Armed Forces.

The Motto of the Bretonian Armed Forces remains:

"Carina, Regina, Imperatrix!"
Carina, Queen and Empress.

The Privateers

During the year 814 AS, Andrew Stuart, Knight of the Realm, published his manuscript "Lines of Supply and Trade Interdiction: A study of the Kusari war machine and its vulnerabilities," Which he spoke on during tours of multiple lecture circuits, and finally in the Queen's Court. In September of 815, Carina became assured of support for Stuart's methods of asymmetrical warfare, and issued him a royal mandate to organize a squadron of privateers to interdict Kusari Trade.

The privateer wing formerly commanded by Andrew Stuart successfully ran strikes deep into Kusari space beyond the Tau patrols. However, with his disappearance, the Privateers, while remaining as a force, have fewer resources than they once had. However, Sir Jack Fraser now commands this group of disparate, and desperate men, behind the lines in Kusari, to do their lot for Queen and country. A country that cannot acknowledge their existence in the interests of political expediency. Sir Jack Fraser is currently on a bender.

The Privateers, due to the end of the war with Gallia, have officially been disbanded, with their letters of Marque declared void.

Personnel

Bretonian Armed Forces - ID & IFF

Admiral of the Fleet:

After voting procedures, made from the Admiralty Board members, a person is appointed to the rank of “Admiral of the Fleet”. The Admiral of the Fleet is the Supreme Commander of the Bretonia Armed Forces. Such honor is given to only a few, and is nearly impossible to achieve. It is not just a title; the bearer of this rank is the “face” of the Bretonian Military Might. He holds the overriding decision in the Admiralty Board and commands the Somerset Fleet.

N/A

Fleet Captain:

Created as less a rank and more akin to a title, the Fleet Captain is the person responsible with shoring up the Armed Forces in case of national crises but also in times of peace. Though nominally a Captain by ranking, the Fleet Captain has the same level of authority as an Admiral, with all the responsibilities that would come with such a position.

N/A

Admiral:

The Admiral is the most prestigious and honorable rank in the Bretonia Armed Forces. Persons given the rank of an Admiral are a member of the Admiralty Board. They are commanders of Her Majesty’s fleets, spread across the Bretonia Sovereign. They may organize Diplomatic encounters, Political relations with the other Houses, as well as large fleet assault groups and are to be informed about everything that is going in Bretonia.

N/A

Commodore:

The Commodore is the most responsible of all commanders, rank. It’s the fourth and last level of command before the Admiral rank. Depending on what the Commodore is appointed to, he must do his job with care and extra caution. Commodores are present in both Diplomatic affairs and Combat encounters. They send direct orders to the members of the Armed Forces, and prepare the future combat plans, advised from their Captains. The Commodore rank is hard to attain. It’s a goal only to those who desire to be involved in more political affairs than combat situations. The responsibilities are on the highest level. A Commodore can also be assigned a fleet to command, it is a large task but with great rewards.

BAF|Cdre.Forename.Lastname

Captain:

The Captain is the third level, Commander rank. He may give orders to anyone from Ensigns to Commanders. The Captain’s responsibilities are higher than the Commander’s. As such, he must be careful in all his actions. Captains are eligible to attain “Titles”, these roles must be treated with respect as they come with great importance. The list of “Titles” is shown below.

BAF|Cpt.Forename.Lastname

Commander:

The Commander is the first rank in Mid Command and has more responsibilities for his men in both Diplomatic and Combat situations. The Commander may give orders to Ensigns, Lieutenants and Lieutenant Commanders. Commanders are the first step in the direction of responsibility and must conduct themselves as a model pilot out in the field. A failure of his mission won’t reflect on his wingmen, but directly on him. Even if his wingmen aren’t performing at their best, it is the Commander’s job to “Sort it out”. A Commander has the opportunity to attain a special role, a list of such roles are displayed below.

BAF|Cdr.Forename.Lastname

Lieutenant Commander:

Once the Lieutenant pilot proves himself in his requirements, he may be given the rank of Lieutenant Commander. This is the first rank that gives the pilot a command power, though on a low level. He can give orders to ensigns and lieutenants, if there is no other high ranked member currently active.

BAF|LtCdr.Forename.Lastname

Lieutenant:

They are the ones who have proven trustworthy and capability, they are able to command ensigns around as they wish. However, any command they may issue can be over-ruled by any decision by a higher ranked officer.

BAF|Lt.Forename.Lastname

Ensign:

Once accepted into the Armed forces, they are acknowledged as Ensigns as in "fresh meat". They are required to prove their worthiness in order to advance to the rank of Lieutenant. They go through excessive load of training for that they may have a chance to survive the battlefield.

Spaceships Utilized

Snubcraft

Cavalier: Light, agile, and fast. These are the characteristics of the Cavalier. Used primarily as scout and light interceptor, the vessel is every smuggler's nightmare.

Paladin: An upgrade from the Cavalier, the Paladin maintains the same philosophy of being a small and fast craft, yet with heavier armor to compensate for the lower agility.

Crusader: The pinnacle of Bretonian engineering, the Crusader is the mainstay of the fighter squadrons defending the Kingdom. The significant armor of the ship makes it a feared vessel amongst the Crown's enemies.

Challenger: Developed as a direct counter to the Kusari battleship and cruiser, the Challenger combines the armor of the previous fighter craft and the raw firepower of Bretonian capital ships into a potent platform acting as a serious threat to any unescorted capital vessels.

Havoc Mk II: The result of a joint Liberty - Bretonia programme to develop a medium bomber, the Havoc is a hybrid of the Challenger and Upholder -- with all their characteristics passed down to this bomber craft.

Capital Vessels

Churchill: Built in large numbers for the Royal Bretonian Navy, this gunboat serves as both a mass deployment vessel and a reliable sentry ship.

Crecy: Tasked with maintaining peace at home and abroad, the Crecy-class Destroyer represents the mainstay of the modern Royal Navy and a venerable vessel on the battlefield in all conditions.

Fortitude: The newest vessel in the arsenal of the Royal Navy, the Fortitude is often tasked with rapid response deployment during times of war, and backwater defence during times of peace.

London Interdictor: The first battlecruiser-class vessel introduced in the service of the Bretonian Navy, the Lend-Lease battlecruiser became a rare sight after the conclusion of the Gallic invasion, with many of the ships returned to Liberty and only a handful kept for additional rapid deployment units.

Dunkirk: The pride of the Royal Bretonian Navy, the Dunkirk-class battleship serves as the cornerstone of the Crown's defences, both in symbolic and military purposes.

Invincible: The biggest ship in service of the Kingdom's Navy, the Invincible has proven a strategic deterrent for invading forces and a veritable warship on the battlefield, going toe-to-toe with modern Valor capitals.

BAF Member Guidelines

1. BAF members are to understand this Faction Status post, and the Laws of Bretonia.

2. Be fully aware of the Bretonian Armed Forces Message Dump and use it.

3. BAF members are to always RP in local and system chat, and unless impractical, in Group Chat.

4. BAF members are always to obey their superior officers; nothing else makes sense in-RP. If you are told to get a fighter or bomber, get that. Junior officers will obey senior officers target assignments in combat. Disobedience also loses battles.

5. Combat/Assistance Priorities are as follows

Priority 1: Always, without delay, assist other BAF, BPA, and other allies in combat who require assistance, but do not overkill, either. Obviously RL takes precedence, but advise others when it does.

Priority 2: Stop Pirates from pirating in Bretonian space.

Priority 3: Stop smuggling. (be mindful of ID restrictions in other systems)

6. Treat other players with courtesy and respect.

7. BAF members with traders are strongly encouraged to support the faction financially. Bretonian Corporation membership encouraged.

8. BAF members above the rank of Lieutenant are to enforce these rules. Report problem players breaking these rules or the server rules to the Fleet Admiral.

9. A BAF member who is sanctioned by the Admins may be expelled from the faction. This will obviously depend on the severity of the offense.

10. Bretonian ships and gear only. Codenamed Weapons Allowed. Anything larger than a Challenger requires clearance from command, and the rank of lieutenant commander.

11. Capital Ships must only be used in combat if the enemy fleet contains equivalent or greater strength of capital ships. Balance as well as possible. A capital ship may take on a non-combat Command role, but only if it is far from the battle. Admirals shall also enforce this rule withe the reserve Fleets (Indies), with the assistance of BRF and RFA. See the following: Link.
