I personally like a good D measuring contest, but that is not the point of rollcalls.
It is all about RP and keeping track of who is paying attention to things.
As for why it cannot be done through skype, people are far more likely to put effort in if they know that there might be people watching other than their faction mates.

I think they are fine, it's a good way of rooting out inactive members like me and ensure that most people are somewhat active. Long time ago I was in factions with a lot of old zombie members who never played but kept the faction stale, and imo that's the worst possible fate for any faction. Better to be a dead faction, then.

In a community this small with groups as tiny as factions, there is literally no excuse for not knowing who is in your faction.
A leader can tell who is active and who is inactive by looking at the activity stats, or by actually playing the game with their faction members.
