Jumping time - moebus - 09-01-2014

I was wondering if there was any information about the RP time needed to jump from a location to another.
In the character's life, is it a matter of seconds, min, hours, days, etc?
I think it would make sense it takes at least a few hours considering the very long distances traveled.
What do you think?

(note that I would not push to implement this time in-game!)

jumping is and will always be seconds, because the chars have to stay in the same arey (sirius) and as long as there is no second area where the chars be while the jumping it is only seconds to jump

I see people considering it differently all the time. In an out-of-character sense; sure, it takes seconds. Personally I'd like to think that travelling the dozens (at bare minimum) of lightyears between stars would take a lot longer - hours perhaps (and assume that the future tech in the jumpgates is just outstanding).

While playing on the server itself you're unlikely to see people thinking of it as taking longer than a few moments. But while writing your roleplay on the forums - well, it's simply up to you. It could take days in one story and a fraction of a second in another; it's however you want to portray it.

The concept of a 'hyper-jump' concerns the pinching together of two finite points in space via the use of a quantum engine. As such, the transit is simultaneous as you 'step' from one point to another.
What you're describing in terms of 'hours of travel' sounds more like a Warp dive or just a faster engine speed.
I'm guessing here, but it's my understanding that the jump drive in Disco is far more of the former than the latter.
Could be wrong though, often am.

if jumping took even hours all my chars would have died of old age by now xD
but yea I agree if it is your RP then you could be subjective about it, but ingame rp on the other hand, should just be seconds.

RE: Jumping time - Binski - 09-01-2014

I'd say go with how it is ingame, like for the JD4, minutes to charge, seconds to jump. Even though its called a "Hyperspace" jump device, its not a 'hyperdrive' which travels via hyperspace, which is a condensed dimension of space-time outside of our own that allows you to travel long distances over shorter time (but still takes time itself). The jump drives like in disco or BSG seem to be (like on the infocard) machines that generate wormholes, artificial singularities, to send a ship to another location directly and instantaneously.

thank you for the answers!

actually, I never thought the travel could be instantaneous but this option is seducing.

I thought the travel was made at supra light speed into a warp space like suggested by the transition video each time we jump:

However, this video could also correspond to the process of leaving and then re-joining the "real" time-space continuum.
