Read a bunch of threads saying neph was op, then some saying bastet is; and I figure it's all changed by now.

So for a merc operating alone in hostile territory, which one is the "better"?

Bastet is for agillity and kill-fast style, less armor, but has the fastest turn rate - Neph is less agility but higher armor, decent fighting skills.

I don't know which one is better. But i would go with bastet cause :

Bastet is better. Can mount 6 codes (shotgun or whatever). Agile, small and <add some more praise words here>

As Haste explained, the Neph has a very large shield bubble, probably the largest of any VHF, bigger than the Manta. Also, it is slow as a brick. Making it an easy prey for whatever you are against.

Neither is particularly fitting for a mercenary, I would say. Unless you've got established roleplay with the Order to make it all work, I suppose.

The Nepthys currently has a hilariously massive shield hitbox making it effectively have no shield, ever. Its armor, large core and seven guns don't make up for that. I'd stay away from it for the time being.

The Bastet is pretty amazing. Six codenames make for a beastly shotgun if you're interested in that sort of stuff. On top of that, it's fast and small. Not a lot wrong with it.

Bastet. Decent PvPers rely on agility not on hull.

Common problem when comparing fighters at the moment. Shield bubbles (or lack thereof) weren't applied in a consistent manner so some have huge advantages over others solely by virtue of their shield. Others meanwhile have their lack of a proper-sized shield as their only real advantage (Lhotse, Sutinga...)

Fighter balance will look quite different when Haste's new bubbles are in so let's just wait for that.
