Hi, I'm bored at work. - Mímir - 01-12-2015 "They say the definition of insanity is repeating the same action and expecting a different reaction. I'm not sure if that makes us the crazy ones for putting up with everything or what, but we'll go with what Hawk said." Ok, once and for all. "They" are wrong... It's a quote grabbed out of thin air, often attributed to everyone from Ben Franklin to Einstein (none of which ever said that) and spread around in popular culture by one-liner dimwits that thought it sounded cool and didn't give it all that much thought to what it actually says. The "insane" part of the quote is that it hinges on a static environment with no changes in the circumstances and premises, like in a laboratory. Social conduct between humans, sane ones mind you, takes place on a very complex level, with a lot of on-the-fly decisions and changes to both circumstances (external and physical ones) and premises (we sometimes wisen up) that you cannot in any way replicate in a lab. It's a natural given for most of us, and for those who worked with people with Aspergers and other conditions on the autistic spectrum will notice just how naturally we adapt, develop and "change the rules". In other words, there is nothing insane in repeating the same action and expecting a different result, if the circumstances have changed. And to take that one step further, by repeating the same action you can slowly affect the structure surrounding the circumstances and thus in turn pave the way for a different result to the same action. It would be insane to think otherwise. Now please, never use that quote ever again. RE: Hi, I'm bored at work. - Veygaar - 01-12-2015 Me too! Didn't read your post just the title. RE: Hi, I'm bored at work. - Mímir - 01-12-2015 Yeah man, work is a drag... RE: Hi, I'm bored at work. - nOmnomnOm - 01-12-2015 ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz what? So, what you are really arguing is that, by changing the parameters of the original premise, you change the result, but then you are trying to equate your changed situation to the original, different situation and using that to "prove" the premise wrong... A=A, A!=B therefore A!=A Huh??! RE: Hi, I'm bored at work. - Zed26 - 01-12-2015 Hi Bored at Work, nice to meet you. I'm Zed26. RE: Hi, I'm bored at work. - Ryus - 01-12-2015 I feel like both your avatar and your signature are examples of the quote in action (in an environment that doesn't change, of course.) RE: Hi, I'm bored at work. - Alestone - 01-12-2015 How rather odd, as I often feel the forums are the place to hunt snarks. I've made some improvements. |
