GBs (experienced pilots needed) - old_dobbs - 01-27-2015

So, I'm planning on starting fresh with a gun boat/ship for the first time ever, and virtually any useful advice would come very handy.
To cut a tedious explanations short, I'll put it this way:

1) Basically, I would like something between good (great?) mobility and still decent firepower and armor (modest, isn't it?); what would you recommend? (liberty, rheinland and bretonia are the circles where I most like hanging around)

2) Which is the strongest CAU I can mount on a gunboat, and which one can I mount on that one (depending on your answer in 1))

3) What is the general advice that, based on your own experience, you would give to a would-be gb pilot? Do you need much skill to pilot it efficiently?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Oops, wanted to actually post this in Discovery 24/7 discussion; the mods can move it if they feel like.

1) When in doubt, go for something neutral. That is, if you are going to use a FL ID. If not, you need to specify that for us
2) Obviously, the best choice is a cap8. It will give you the most hitpoints, which is sort of the whole idea behind using armor. However, many will tell you that for a ship with so little hitpoints, a cau8 is not needed. I usually feel comfortable in gunboats with at least a cau5 armor upgrade.
3) All you need to do is master turret steering. Once you do, you won't be carelessly attacked by anyone. When it comes to the offensive however, it really depends on who you are fighting. My suggestions is to avoid shooting snubs, because the vets tend to moan when they cannot have their 1v1s during group fights, so just stick to shooting other GBs and caps.

As an alternative to a GB, you can try using a well-armored medium transport. Or even smaller ones such as the Armored Transport or Gull. Smack some Dulzians on it and you will be surprised how fun those things are to fly.

1) RheinGB OP, pls nerf
2) You can mount cau8 on anything, except for Bnose and LH GB
3) You do need skill for Pulse-Razor GB. You don't need it for Solaris one

My suggestion is to ignore the above statement. Part of a GBs job is to be an anti-snub platform. Battle tactics should ultimately be at your own discretion, not what the "vets" complain about.

1) Claymore or Bottlenose are your best choice for agility. I didn't flied the Bottlenose yet, however I can say that Claymore is GREAT at pissing off cruiser and battleship players because they simply can't hit you. Also, properly positioned, this thing can evade solaris fire. On the other hand, you have paper-thin armor.

I'd also recommend the Defiant. I did flied it a bit in Texasburg and I have to say that it is a nice all-rounder. Can't really say anything on other gunboats as I didn't really used them.

2) CAU8 in case of Claymore and Defiant, CAU7 in case of Bottlenose.

3) Turret steer is a must. If you can't steer while in turret mode, you will either die, not kill anyone or both. You also need a bit of skill for razor/pulse loadouts. I'd say that going for full solaris may be a good first choice before you'll catch the basics.

I hope it helps a little.

^ It helps a lot, thanks!
Sindroms, I think I watched you on yt, fighting in a gb, you're great, thanks!

I think I reduced my options to LH or LR gun boat. I'd rather get the LH one cause I've always been inclined to them, but the fact CAU 8 can't be mounted on it is somewhat disappointing, whereas I suppose LR gb doesn't have that problem, right? And by the way, how much money will I (approximately) need to fully equip a gb? My main aim is to make an ultimate killing machine, feared all over the universe Wink

Thanks a lot guys, you're really helping me!

Around 45 millions for the gunboat, max 8 for guns and only 825 for CAU8 or ~450 for CAU7. Have a nice day. c:

EDIT: You'll do perfectly fine with a CAU6, which costs below 200 millions.

I know, but still I want to get myself a CAU8, just for kicks Wink

A cap8 and a 7 on a gunboat is one fifth of a SNs damage in difference. Hardly worth mentioning.
