So I've been wandering Sirius for years now, working as a Freelancer for hire to just about anyone that will pay me. Generally, life out here amongst the stars isn't as good to other Freelancers as it has been to me, I have 3 ships of my own (admittedly, one has some rented equipment) that I can utilize from the small hangar I rent on Trenton, and those ships have some considerable worth to them (for a Freelancer at least). Some might say I've been fairly successful as a Freelancer, and I'd say it's been exceptional. I've seen many Freelancers find permanent work, even getting themselves desk jobs, and I've seen many Freelancers become mercenaries or join Military organisations of some sort. I've also seen a fair share of Freelancers just stop flying amongst the stars completely because of financial trouble, or even just because their health prevents them from being out in the 'verse too long. Either way, there have been many people that I've stumbled past in my walk amongst the stars, and though I'm not the most successful out there, I do think it's a good idea for me to write my experiences somewhere.

With that out of the way, I think it'd be best to start at the start. Who am I? Where have I been? What have I done?

Well, I'm not really sure where I came from. It might have been Barrier Gate Station in Cornado, but a lot of my growing up was on various bases amongst Liberty and Bretonia. My father was an Electrician for DSE and was often out on big, complex jobs that meant we'd be staying at different bases every month or two. This didn't really bother me, Dad made enough money for me to buy my own ship at 13 years old, barely old enough to see out of the cockpit, mind you, but it was definitely better than hanging around inside a base all day. While Dad was working, I'd be out learning to fly amongst other Freelancers, and doing a little bit of travel and trade between bases. Never got picked on by pirates as they didn't want to kill a kid, so I was pretty safe for the first few years of my space faring.

After a couple of years of trading and scouting ahead for traders and the like, I had enough money to get out of my little pre-owned Falcon Heavy Fighter, and through a little bit of bargaining and knowing the right people, I moved into my first real ship of my own at the age of 15. The Waran, which I still fly today as my preferred ship. I've never loved the look of a ship more than the look of a Raven's Talon or Waran, and the Waran seemed like a better choice for me as I was looking for something comfortable, spacious and powerful. With a few modifications to my ship's weight and retro-thrusters, and the main engine being tuned by a friend of mine on Barrier Gate Station, I had a heavy bomber that was tuned well enough to stand it's ground against lighter bombers and even some fighters, though I was under no illusion that I could fight a skilled fighter pilot and come out on top. I knew the risks of buying a heavy bomber like being able to be killed by light and heavy fighters, but it seemed more advantageous to get something with a lot of firepower that can still stand a chance against bigger fighters and other bombers.

After writing "Misfit" on the left side of the Waran's nose in heat-resistant paint, and painting a fierce-looking mouth and teeth on the nose to look intimidating, I left Freeport 4 to roam the stars for a while. My first job in my new Waran was assisting Liberty and Bretonian forces in repelling Gallic incursion into Leeds. Using my bomber, I managed to keep my distance from the fights but still throw enough Nova torpedoes into Gallic capital ships and being able to shoot down Gallic bombers to help out in fights. Bretonia payed me fairly generously for my help and offered me a spot in the BAF, but I declined as I was just a Freelancer starting out, not looking for a steady job or a permanent position.

My help in the combat in Leeds made me feel, well, really good about myself. My only real problem was the smog clouds in Leeds tearing the painted teeth and the "Misfit" off my ship's nose, which I had to repaint. I decided it would be good to move into the Taus to see what it was like as I'd never been there. Dad used to tell me he was constantly harassed by Outcast during his time working on Freeport 10, so I thought maybe I'd go and see what the Outcasts were all about.

Once I arrived in the Taus however, I found myself becoming immediately lost. The Taus seemed so big, and I didn't know my way around them. After a couple of days just wandering around the Taus, I found myself at Java Station, an IMG base in the Tau 23 system. It was here that I met up with a lady named Anna I believe it was. McCarthy? Maybe. She taught me a fair bit about surviving out on the edges of Sirius, and how to stay alive in altercations with fighter pilots. This training proved to be invaluable when the Outcasts found out there was a Freelancer training with the IMG, and saw me as a threat. I was basically taught, as a heavy bomber that I should either find myself dominating, or defending myself in a fight with a smaller ship. After a few weeks of tactics training, I thought it'd be better for me to head down through the Taus again to try my luck getting gun-for-hire like contracts.

I headed home, or at least where I thought home was (because I'm not really sure), to Liberty. After renting a small hangar on Trenton Outpost, I found myself escorting traders at least 3 times a day from Liberty up to Kusari, or into Bretonia. A lot of the time these runs were pretty quiet, but in the times it weren't I found myself being able to apply my training to real combat scenarios, and defended hundreds of transports over the years against pirates on the lanes. I wouldn't call myself an expert in fighting with a bomber, but I could destroy ships more than half my size by the time I was 17. I'd been escorting transports in and out of Liberty for the last couple of years, and now I'm almost 18. Some pilots say I'm the youngest person they've ever seen flying a ship in their entire career, and I can't say I've met a pilot younger than myself flying alone.

Over the last couple of years, I've managed to make hundreds of millions of dollars simply escorting ships and fulfilling bounties. Most unlawfuls don't consider me an enemy, but they really don't like me because of my days escorting. Similar can be said about lawfuls, for different reasons of course. Lawfuls have seen me hanging out with the wrong people apparently, and can sometimes be a little sceptical of my intentions.

I'm just trying to make a lot of money. That's really it.

With all of the money I've acquired over these past few years, I've spent nearly all of it on upgrades to my ship, as well as purchasing a Raven's Talon and fully arming and upgrading it, as well as... Well. More or less stealing a ship. I've become pretty proficient in the use of technologies that make my life as a Freelancer easier, like cloaking devices that make it easy for me to sneak up to my bounty targets, flank pirates attacking transports, or sneaking past pesky patrols. I've recently started to build a business, but that's a story for another time.

I hope this log has helped me tell my story in some way. I'm not sure where this log is going to go or how many people could potentially read it, but I'll keep updating it as I see I need to.

Misfit out.

Looks like it's time to update this log. Things have happened, I have more cool things.

Basically I've blown a lot of my money on starting a business, a lot of people have seen it around but don't know who owns it. It's basically a postal service, we deal with a lot of different factions moving all sorts of parcels and packages and even large shipments of commodities. Pretty much all of the profit from the business has been spent on business related costs like ships and maintenance, and I think that's how I'm going to keep it for a while.

A lot of my money I've also spent on buying myself an Osprey from the Zoners, to replace my ageing Waran. I really like it, Super Heavy Fighters are pretty good in my opinion, and it's definitely a refreshing change from the big slow Waran. I've also purchased a cloak for this ship, which was a bit of a hassle to find on the market, but even more so to install. I've had to modify the cargo hold of my ship in order to install additional generators for this cloak as it is a Mk II cloak, because the Osprey is a larger ship than most fighters. The Osprey wasn't made to handle the amount of weird cloak things that happen from a powerful cloak from the Mk II so I've been observing recently that my wingtips have started to emit some kind of strange radiation and sparks which I presume is from the cloak. I'm a little worried about the health implications from frequent usage of the cloak, but more so about what's happening to my ship. I'll probably have to get it looked at by a technician, it's probably going to be expensive too which is my main concern.

Money is getting a little tight, but I'm keeping busy and keeping my head above the.. space ice, I suppose is the more relevant euphemism.

Misfit out.

Misfit's Log

Well, it's been a while since I've bothered to update this log. Things aren't awfully different, I've mostly been hanging around my hangar on Trenton and doing some occasional freelancing. I did take a trip out to the Sigma systems as I'd heard there were some newly discovered jump holes and I was keen to check those out. I forgot to take pictures but man, those systems were pretty.

Anyway, that stuff is boring. I'm sure what I really should be putting in this log is stuff that's changed. On one of my little expeditions out to the Edge Worlds, I found a cool alien artifact in Omicron Delta. I don't know what it is, and I don't know what it does, but it looks really cool and has all sorts of little inscriptions on it and it makes a nice humming noise. Did I mention it glows?

Upon returning to Liberty, I got stopped by a police officer. After scanning my hold and finding my cool new artifact (which he didn't think was as cool as I did), he told me I'd have to apply for a license to keep it, get out of Liberty, or surrender the artifact to the Liberty Government (him, basically). After some persuasion and assuring him I'm not a dealer, I told him I'd apply for a license and headed home to Trenton. He said "Good luck with that", in a really sarcastic tone. I figured they must be hard to apply for so I did a little research.

The thing about those Illegal Goods Transporting Permits, is that they're generally only issued to corporations and businesses that have contracts with the government to transport stuff that traders and the like aren't allowed to. After reading up on these licenses and thinking "Man, how am I meant to get one of these just to hang onto this cool little trinket", I figured there must be a way to spoof one of these licenses, you know, a fake. I headed off to the Junker's base in the Jersey field in one of my other ships, leaving the artifact locked up tight in my hangar. The Junkers have to have some sort of contacts to someone that knows how to fake these government documents, what with the Junkers being the shadiest people anywhere in Sirius, right?

Well, sure enough, I talked to a couple of Junkers in the bar on Rochester, and one of them said he knew a guy. Ten million credits, for one of these faked documents.

Ten million.

And you know what? I bought it.

It worked for a while, these licenses are only a recent thing. Most police couldn't tell it was fake, until I realised I couldn't keep this up. Police are constantly scanning everyone's ships, it was only a matter of time until I was caught with a fake license and this artifact. I started the process of applying for one of these licenses.

To my surprise, it only took a matter of days to be approved. All I had to do was prove I had no prior criminal record, state my intentions with the artifact, and pay a one million credit fee. I picked it up from a police station on Planet Manhattan, and I was on my way.

Surprisingly, police officers were even more skeptical of the real document than they were the fake. Probably because there had been a lot of fake certificates found, and they had to be extra attentive and double check it was real. There were still hot shot cops that wanted to arrest me regardless of my license to keep the artifact, but nothing has happened.

All the while with this artifact business, I was still having problems with my cloaking device. The sparks and radiation being emitted from the device while not in use hadn't got worse, but it was still a little scary at times.

The Osprey Mk. II that I bought from the Zoners was designed as a long range escort ship for the Zoners, with massive firepower in case the Zoner's convoys were attacked, and a large cargo bay to store supplies for the pilots who would be travelling long distances between Freeports. These are points that appealed to me when I bought it, and still do, but after learning that the Osprey's cargo hold was the only one of any fighter or bomber large enough to store the appropriate equipment in order to mount (albeit unsafely), the Mk. II cloaking device, I did just that. That was over two years ago, and this cloaking device has been nothing but trouble ever since.

The only real advantage of the Mk. II cloak over the light cloak that all the other fighters use, is it's capacity and efficiency. I can cloak for twice as long as the older models of the light cloak, but that's where the advantages end. It takes much, much longer to charge, leaving you vulnerable for up to half a minute as your shields go down and that power goes to the cloak to charge it. It's a pain in every way possible, not to mention the troubles I've had with it and it's overcharging, radiation, and electromagnetic interference.

Recent advances in cloaking technology, however, have meant that light cloaking devices can now output enough power to properly cloak a larger super heavy fighter like the Osprey. After enquiring with technology and manufacturing companies across sirius, I took a trip to Bretonia and traded my troublesome Mk. II cloak for a brand new, more powerful light cloaking device. It has the same capacity and efficiency as my old Mk. II cloak, but charges in half the time and takes up much less cargo space. This makes it possible for me to mount a much better armour upgrade.

After successfully mounting and installing my device, I'd hoped my cloaking troubles had gone for good. A new cloak which I know is compatible with my ship, a rugged mounting solution and high quality mounting and routing components, has to mean my cloaking device will work properly with none of this overcharge and radiation spilling garbage, right?

Wrong.

It's worse now, the sparks are visible from the outside of my ship and they make electric sounding noises. The radiation shielding on my hull keeps me safe, I've made sure to check. The radiation and electromagnetic field generated by the cloak is fairly small, only a few meters in diameter around the cloaking device itself, meaning it isn't a huge hassle when the ship is in the hangar or around other ships. It's still very, very annoying.

I need to get it looked at.

Well, that's a lot of words I just put down here. I'll update this log more frequently from now on, hopefully.

Misfit's Log

I've been on an adventure and I thought I'd journal some of the images I took. Mostly grainy guncam stills but worth saving considering the place I went.

I'd heard a rumour of a recently opened jumphole in the Kepler system, so I headed that way to take a look for myself and this is what I found.

The jumphole and the strange cloud around it

After jumping in, I saw a huge cloud in the distance. Putting two and two together I figured that must be the way out if the way in was surrounded by a similar cloud.

The size of the rocks, similar in scale and appearance to the ones I saw up in the Taus a few years ago.

Through the rocks I managed to spot what I thought to be flames and a metallic structure in the distance. Sure enough, I found this strange abandoned base. Clearly I wasn't the first one here, and some time ago someone constructed a base in order to mine the precious mineral of some sort that was there. I didn't see anyone else while I was in the system, and my attempted research hasn't brought up anything of interest. It must be a new resource of some kind that hasn't been well documented yet.

Regardless, I headed toward the big cloud in the distance and sure enough there was a jumphole out of the system. I ended up somewhere in Inverness, a system with a Junker's base where I used to buy my ship weapons until I found a more reliable and cheaper dealer.

Anyway, big things coming soon in regards to the broken cloak thing. Hopefully the organisation I've contacted can help me out with this annoying cloak issue. I'd really like to get it working properly and not be scared for my health every time I step into the cockpit.

Well I just submitted a form to the IRG, they're the organisation that will hopefully be helping me solve my cloaking device issues. I applied for one of their special powercores, since this Doctor Erzie fellow seems to think my issues could be power related. I dunno, it seems kinda typical, like the sort of thing that would happen when you ask a ship dealer for a good mechanic, but instead they just want to sell you a new ship. Either way, a new power core would be nice. Hopefully it helps, but if not, hey I have a new powercore I guess?

Though speaking of the cloak, it has been acting up more than usual lately. It doesn't often malfunction when it's actually in use, but a couple of times in the past week it's shut down for no reason, leaving me shieldless and exposed in a time when I probably don't want to be seen. Could use a once over once I finish writing this comm to see if there's any other issues with it. Even then, it's not the first cloak to do this to me, but it only happens on the Osprey, not my other ships.

Speaking of my other ships, I've been doing a lot of gear consolidation recently. Moving around guns, shifting armour plates, I even have plans to buy another old Osprey and use it as a bit of a test bed for new loadouts and stuff like that. They are pretty expensive though so I doubt I'll be doing it soon considering the amount of money I'm spending trying to get my current Osprey to work with cloaking devices, but I should have enough credits to buy it in a couple of months with my escort contracts and bounties (if they ever pay me, that is).

My Sabre has seen a lot more use recently, as my Osprey has spent a lot of time just being a shell and a mess of parts scattered around my hangar floor. I decided to go with the same blue paint and lights scheme on my Sabre as with my Osprey, and it looks pretty nice. I had a bunch of antique ship guns laying around so I threw those on a Scimitar I have loaned to me. It's a nice little ship, I might even buy it outright.

Anyway, hopefully I can get this new powercore to fix my problems. I really don't like the idea of this Osprey and cloaking device being a permanent pain for me, I really want it to all work out.

Well things are finally starting to move along. IRG got back to me and have approved my request for one of their fancy power cells, so I've taken the Osprey up to Ames Research Station in Kepler to have it installed and also to have them look over my cloak and ship and see if they can fix it with the new power cell. Hopefully they can.

In the mean time, I'm actually writing this log up while hitching a ride on a Universal Shipping transport, heading back to Trenton and my hangar there. I'll be using my Sabre for a couple of days, or whenever it is they finish with my Osprey. I've been meaning to fly the Sabre more anyway.

So I've finally got my Osprey back from the IRG up at Ames Research Station.

It feels good to be back in the tank again, especially since it's had quite the power plant upgrade from the special IRG power cell that was supposed to help curb the radiation and electromagnetic interference coming from my cloak and radiating throughout my ship, though if anything it's made it worse. I'll attach a clip here of how the ship looks now, just idling in space. Honestly, it was a long shot in the first place. I think this ship is just going to be permanently defective in this way. If a group of dedicated scientists can't figure out how to fix my ship and it's cloak, then who can? Well at least I have a sweet new powercore now I guess. I don't even know what to do with all this extra power apart from shoot my Supernova Antimatter Cannon into space wildly.

In the time my Osprey has been up at Ames though, I've been seeing more of those Cultist robot ship things. Once you destroy the ship their remains just kinda sit there, small enough to tractor into my ship most of the time. From the parts I've recovered, I'm managed to fashion a set of their weapons, plus a cannon that I can mount on my auxiliary slot, though I'm not sure how I can cool it once it fires. They seem pretty nifty as a whole, though their beam technology makes them incompatible with the rest of the weapons on my ship and makes aiming impossible without using one weapon group exclusively. I'm going to keep these guns on my Sabre for a while unless someone wants to buy them off me. Just because they're cool.

Misfit's Log

Power management is difficult. Ever since I've had this Ingenuus Power Cell installed, I've been running my Osprey at a reduced power rate, which is not much different to running the ship on it's old powerplant which is approximately 75% the efficiency of the regular Zoner powerplant for this ship. The reason for this is that I've been testing it's compatibility. I'm sure the IRG have made sure the ship and power cell work well together, but of course I'm conducting my own tests and benchmarks to see just how high up I can crank this power cell. I'll be sure to not everything down just in case I have issues in the future, but that'll be stored somewhere outside of this log.

For now though, I'll say a little bit about the way I've been meaning to conduct these tests. A sort of preamble to my notes if you will.

When I first picked up my ship from Ames Research Station, I was a little cautious about how I should use this new power cell. On the one hand, it was explained to me by Dr. Erzie himself that this new powercell did nothing to stop the random electromagnetic and radiation emissions that were coming from the wings and rear of my ship, and if anything had in fact made them worse. I wasn't too concerned by this, because I new it was a long shot to begin with. On the other hand, I was faced with this super-powerful source of energy that I somehow had to make work with all of my ship systems and components. I figured then that it would be best if I didn't try to take immediate advantage of this new power cell, and instead I should see if I could optimise it's use and perhaps even find my own way to solve my cloaking device compatibility problems, by using the powercell to power other systems and see if I could distribute power elsewhere to curb the emissions coming from my ship.

I flew from Ames Research Station back to Trenton at half power. Making sure I only powered my engines, my weapons on standby, and my comms suite. Navigation wasn't necessary as I knew the route. With this distribution setting, the emissions were still coming out of the rear and wings of my ship, however I did notice my ship was a lot quieter, likely due to the pressurisation and atmospheric controls being disabled for the short trip.

Once I returned to Trenton I started tests in the hangar. I've done tests like that before I got the powercell and for the most part the emissions weren't dangerous (with the exception of frying a datapad I had on me at the time), so I knew it would likely just be a repeat performance of that test but with larger and more powerful emissions. So I was careful. I slowly powered on all my systems as I would if I were about to undock from the station. First main power, then onboard computer systems, then thrusters to get me off the deck. Once off the deck, I made sure the emissions weren't messing with anything in the hangar, paying close attention to the electric arcs emanating from the ship's rear. Anything the arcs were touching weren't being scorched or burning up, so I proceeded to turn on the rest of my ship's systems one by one. None of the additional systems seemed to worsen the effects of the emissions and no noticeable increase in radiation was performed.

Anyway. I'll elaborate on these notes more somewhere else. For now I have more testing and assessing to do before I increase the power draw from this cell.

Misfit's Log

It's been a while

I've been working closely with two independent researchers (their top physicist and engineer) from the Heisenberg Research Station in Koeln, Rheinland, and another engineer from Ames Research Station in Kepler. They've been flying with me for close to three months now. We've conducted numerous tests with the Ingenuus Power Cell in my cargo hold attached to the main power supply, in preparation for the mating of the cell with the power supply permanently. Such an installation should be able to provide a much more reliable -and most importantly- consistent power stream to my ship.

Currently (that's not a pun) the power cell can only provide 75% of it's output to my ship, which hasn't been a problem since 75% is the maximum output I'm comfortable putting through my ship until I can upgrade some of the old girl's components. The bottleneck in it's output is due to the cables we use to connect the cell to the power supply. These cables are very expensive, and are used in transport ships to connect the power supply to specifically Heavy Transport Shield generators. With the power cell completely integrated into the supply, these cables will not be necessary and we can theoretically ramp up the output of the cell.

Theory aside, I've been conducting some practical tests by flying around the Sirius sector, logging the power requirements in different states of operation and observing the power cell's behaviour. I'll insert a diagram of the route I took.

The orange route indicates the "round tour" experiment.
The red route indicates a second trip we took to expand our data sets.

The 'round tour' went in a clockwise direction around the map, and the second trip was a return journey along the red path. The green line shows my proposed route to Heisenberg in Koeln, Rheinland. I'll be dropping by Freeport 2 on the way to pick up some additional components.

It's all coming together.

Me again. Wait, who else would it be?

Anyway, after what has been literally months I've finally made it to the Cologne system with my Osprey, ready to start the modifications to turn the Ingenuus Power Cell into a power core compatible with my ship. The current method of having the power cell enclosed in a specialised container has been adequate for testing of the core's output and effects on my ship, however now I need to look into a more permanent solution.

The independent research team that has been flying with me for a few months now to observe the power cell have been in talks with engineers and physicists upon Heisenberg Research Station, where they hope to be able to turn the power cell into a ship's powercore suitable for the Super Heavy Fighter class, and in turn, my Osprey. How they will do this is a mystery to me, but I'm certain the great minds aboard this magnificent station will come up with an elegant solution that won't require too much modification of the existing structure, and it's additional armour upgrades.

Speaking of this station, wow this place is incredible. There are people here from all over, and of course they're all nerds but like in the impressive way. These are proper scientists and researchers and stuff like that. Even just sitting in the bar I feel so dumb and small compared to these people. They're a dedicated bunch too, I've witnessed fights over telescope time and research disagreements already, and I've only been here for a couple of days! It's amazing stuff.

Anyway, I'll write up another log once they've figured out how to convert the cell into a powercore.
