This is going to sound shocking, but how the hell do you turret steer?

Press H for turret mode. Set up wasd for pitch up, turn left, pitch down and turn right in the controls. (or any other control you might feel suitable). Use + to zoom out, - to zoom in (again, depending on your controls). Control the movement and view range of the ship using this while shooting scrubbies all the same.

I will make a short vidyo tutorial on this today.

Press F1 and go to controls. You can make it whatever you want. I use various setups depending on the ship I'm using.

I was wondering if it would be possible to force camera to be rather, well, system plane based, rather than ship based (camera doesn't move while ship moves, like in Starshatter: The Gathering Storm).

That would make cap combat way easier.

If I do remember correctly, in one of the flying modes, you can keep pressed lmb, and prevent camera's rotations, while ship is turning and performing maneuvers. It's migh look pretty complicated, but after some practice peroid, you won't even notice, that you holding lmb.

When flying in turret mode and with free mouse movement on, you need to aim slightly to the side whenever you are making a turn to the opposite direction. It is very disorientating at first, but after a while you will not even notice it.

The big challenge is to assign your keys in a manner that most laptop and low-grade keyboards do not cancel them around. Unlike WASD, you tend to keep them held down more or less all the time while performing evasive actions.

Yes, you get used to it. Once you do that alot you know on which sides it doesn't move n stuff, or you also can of course zoom out further until you have a steady position, but from certain angles it still will move.

I know I can do that, but it's kinda disorientating, when you have turned background off to raise the framerate during bigger battles.

Setting a waypoint at the closest solar helps.
