Community input: Forum software switch - Alley - 02-22-2015

Myself and Moveit56 have been discussing a potential switch of forum software, as we have contacted the lead developer of a brand new professional forum software and managed to get a nice deal.

As you might have noticed MyBB is pretty much causing constant problems. The theme tends to do weird things and doesn't scale correctly on multiple resolutions, the text editor is buggy (less with the CKEditor plugin, but still) and sometimes things tend to be rather slow.

That new software is really nicely designed, light, responsive and god it just works without us pulling our hair out. Out of the many features, some of the most interesting ones are:

- A working search engine
- A damn good editor
- A fully working mentions and alert system with desktop notification support if you allow it
- HTML5 pagination system.
- Easier moderation
- Custom Pages
- Drag & Drop support
- Responsive Design (mobile support)
- Integrated Anti-Spam
- Advanced quote management
- Post Automerge
- Easy to customise and make plugins for it (so we can actually do our own stuff)
- Way more stuff

The transition would be pretty smooth. The developer is offering us a converter and we wouldn't have much to change in order to switch disco.
You might wonder why I've not given out any name. Basically we don't want this thread to turn into a "but x is better" thread.

Post your thoughts and questions.

Would be pretty cool to have an easier way to manage our forumworking stuff. And more user-friendly.

I don't actually see why not. Looks pretty decent.

Been having a lot of issues on my end with the forums plus I hate the look of the editor so I am down.

oh my god yes please

I'm assuming we wouldn't lose anything(or at least nothing recent) from this forum, if it's better then my only question is. Will we be able to get the shoutbox in it's own window now?

Please.

It doesn't seem like too bad of an idea. Can't complain about more accessibility either.
I do have a question though.
You said there would be a converter, so this would be mostly an interface update right? Would there be any loss of current faction threads and whatnot?

Assuming that there would be no loss of made content I am all for a switch

Annnnnnnnnnnnd Alley's name is in gold once more.
Back on topic, if it is necessary like so many claim it to be, go ahead, just a few things:
Is this going to cost us anything and where is the money coming from?
Can we trust this dev to not take the money and run or give us an incomplete product?
Also before the last update, there was a search bar on the right. I miss it. I get that there is a search page link at the top, but it is still another page to load. Can we have it back?

One of the last times we changed, all internal links got shredded, which killed a lot of nice-to-read roleplay posts and wrecked crosslinks and design codes on bounty boards, etc. I would not like to re-do everything again, as this was very annoying.

In general, yes. I am not really too convinced of this forum, and have already reported my very weird typestroke-response lag that should not be happening with a machine I have here.
