Basically what my opinion is... you are an uninformed person. On a planetary scale.
First, Cloudflare is a CDN. We especially use it to prevent the forums from being knocked out by DDOS attacks. Pretty much anyone that can use google and type "cloudflare" will find these informations as first result. Good job on wasting my time writing that explanation.
Second, what is the NSA/GCHQ doing here? They don't have access to our forum server nor game server.
Third, yes, this is an extremely specific circumstance and your level of absolute ignorance doesn't really make me want to attempt to explain it to you. This is how it will be done and that's it. Try to prove me wrong.
Fourth, collecting your data to a cloud. There's no such thing, it's not even implemented.
Fifth, return to normal updates. Yes, everyone will gladly listen to you and want to return to 1 year between updates. I'm sure of that.

Anyway, While you may or not know. Your opinion isn't very decisive. So while you may not like what Alley and the dev team is doing. Many other people like it and are impressed, and I'm one of them.

Every single online game nowadays uses an auto-update launcher and I personally see no probs with us using one as well.

Never said that i am a specialist and know a better way to do it. ...only stating that updating was easier before.

nobody knows what servers they can access. not even you... pretty sure we know they like stuff saved in clouds. But, you r right, they are not interested in our ships-data and with "collecting data in a cloud" i didn't mean anything else to be more specific.

You collect ships-data, if i am right? Data of my/our ships - That's what i wrote about to be more specific. Nothing more.

Personally i have no problem with update a year (if bugs are not too serious).
WHAT I MEANT:
If someone (doesn't matter who) tells me "only one (last) time" more often than ONE single TIME then i cannot believe that anymore.
Like many others i do not like if I trust and fail.
Did a completely new&fresh installation of Freelancer one month ago and thought it is "only one time". If it is necessary and extremely specific circumstances force me to do this again, i will do it.
But I hope you are right this time with "only one time"...
New DS-Launcher seems fine (although i do not like internet-clouds). Old one was okay too. Auto-Update doesn't work obviously - That's why i suggested to THINK ABOUT working with the old one again.
I made this suggestion albeit i am no IT-specialist (but not your idiot for sure). Maybe that was a mistake?
and Alley, you obviously somehow got me wrong...
I HIGHLY APPRECIATE your work as a dev and i am glad you are that nice and do this all for the game and the community.
