WHY ARE THERE SUDDENLY 100 OF THEM 2-SECOND NUKING MY DESTROYERS

when i played this mission as a kid, i sold all my destroyers and frigates before this mission, and bought endless interceptors, scouts and bombers (but not many bombers i dont recall)

every time I did the garden prior to this time, the Multibeam Frigates NEVER appeared until I got to the Cathedral
Expecting this again, I sold most of my ion array and ion beam frigates and built assault and drone frigates, then proceeded to dock all corvettes on the Mothership and the Tiidani carrier I stole to prevent them from dying
ordinarily this works and I can just swat the fighters out of the sky with the frigates while my destroyers fend off the mothership and shooting the fuel pods
THEN SUDDENLY THIS LEGION OF ION-BEAM HELL DESCENDS UPON MY ASS AND STARTS SHREDDING MY FLEET INTO NOTHING
21 FRIGATES REDUCED TO 2 IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS, THEN THEY TURNED AND NUKED ONE OF MY STOLEN DESTROYERS IN NO TIME AT ALL
KADESHI, CHILL THE HELL OUT

the AI reacts to what you do you know.. it doesnt just have 1 routine it follows.
in multiplayer if you build an assload of corvettes and minimal fighters, the vaygr will build loads of lance fighters to counter you.
so if you started the mission with no anti-cap, then prepare to get capped
