A witch and her apprentice - Char Aznable - 07-09-2015

Pain flushed through Nikas head, waking her and feeling like someone had split her forehead in two. She moaned, turned herself on the side, and just then realized she had no clue where she was.

Looking around, she saw a makeshift sickbay. Medical beds, two 'nurses' (just younger students with white lab coats) weaseling around the room, and all combined with a flickering, dirty white toplight. Once she tried to get up in her bed, the younger of the two ran over to her.

"You shouldn't be awake, Kommandantin! Rest yourself, verdammt!"

Nika wasn't sure what she was talking about. To be honest, yes, her return to Bruchsal was under... Unfortunate circumstances, but that doesn't mean she couldn't work, so she decided to ignore the advice and stood up - only to immediately regret that decision. Her vision blurred, and the lights grew brighter, and when she lost her balance she let herself fall back into the sheets. No report to Freya, then. On the other hand...

"Okay, okay. I'll stay here. Could you do me a favor though? Could you get to the Vorsitzende and tell her I need to speak to her about the Verlag and my next publication?"

Nika didn't like the secrecy, but she was sure that Freya would get the hint. Considering she had never written something in the Militantenverlag (although she most certainly planned to) the hint was more or less clear - 'there is something secret I need to tell you'.

The nurse grumbled, she apparently didn't see herself as an errand girl - but then started to speak.

"Hmm. IF you stay put and sleep a bit then, I'll do that."

Freya did not for a moment hesitate when the nurse had come to her office. She had been carefully separating Nika from the Widerstand's command structure, slowly preparing her for a line of work considerably different from that of your usual Bundschuh fighter.

She entered the medbay and spoke to the nurses. "We require some privacy, you may return when I leave." The nurses knew better than to argue with Freya and simply nodded and went on to take care of other patients further ahead.

The long-haired party leader grabbed a wooden stool that was alongside the wall opposite to Nika and sat down next to the bed. "Nika, it appears they've shaken you up quite a bit." Calling people by their first name was quite unusual for Freya, doing so suggested she considered someone more than a mere colleague. "What happened?" She looked around to be sure she wasn't being eavesdropped and leaned closer to Nika, continuing with a softer voice. "I assume you've ran into something interesting."

She wasn't even barely surprised about the quick response. If the past months taught her anything, than that Freya didn't screw around if it came to response time. What baffled her though was the first name, even Nickname - of course anyone called her Nika, but she wasn't used to being called such by the Vorsitzende.
Trying to get in a less humiliating position while lying in her bed, she brought up the inner strength to look her in the eye.

"Yes... I indeed found something disturbing. Have you seen the report about the last battle against the Büro Agents?" Shortly thinking her question over, she added "Of course you do... Well, the Oberst most certainly told you. More importantly... This."

Nika pulled something out of her bedsheets, a paper, apparently printed on. Sensory output data, describing a BDM-identified ship using not only a weird IFF, but even a nomad power cell - and a written report describing an alien cruiser openly supporting both BDM and military ships.

"I would have given you this info on the regular channel, but... Well, I don't have access to a terminal here. And standing up... Well, just look at the medical records. She grinned, but was obviously not meaning it. I have to admit, I'm pretty disturbed by this. Infected BDM and Aliens flying openly around in Rheinland, backing the military up? Things are getting serious, Ma'am... And I'm not sure what to do about it."

Freya put her hands together and nodded. "I see. I suppose I should've expected this. This fits with other recent developments."

She reacted surprisingly calm to Nika's revelations. "The situation with Nassau, the suspicious activities of the Büro, the Order being branded terrorists."

The Order. Even though they were allies, they were always shrouded in mystery somehow. A number of activists had travelled to Omicron-Mu to run supplies but even they didn't learn all that much about them. Heroes of the Nomad War, that's what the Bundschuh taught at Bielefeld University. Most contact with them went through Freya, even small things like the acquisition of Order-built fighters.

"This is a worrying situation we're in, Nika. It is not something then Bundschuh can handle. Or rather, most people here can't handle this. I think you can however." She hesitates for a moment looking down. "The Order has kept an eye on your progress. The information you have been providing to me has been of great interest to them and they..." she pauses and then corrects herself. "we are impressed."

She lifts her head again to look Nika in the eye. "I suppose this might be a bit confusing to you."

Nika was stunned for a second, like someone hit her on the head. Of course she suspected the Vorsitzende to be something more than what she pretended to be - that much was obvious - but an Agent of the infamous Order? And... That last sentence... What had she maneuvered herself into?

"I... Well, confusing is probably not the best word to describe it, Ma'am..." - her voice cracked, she hoped that Freya interpreted this as a sign of her wounds rather than her insecurity - "But I am not quite sure what there is to be impressed... And, what's more important, what this... 'being impressed' means for the future. If you... know what I mean."

RE: A witch and her apprentice - TheJarl - 07-12-2015

Freya heard the doubt and hesitation in Nika's voice. She couldn't blame her, most people would be rather overwhelmed in such a situation.

"What it means for the future?" She grins. "It means you're no longer going to carry out missions just for me. You'll be working directly for the Order itself, Nika. They need you. If that is not enough, I need you too. I know this may all seem like a prank, but it's not." She quickly adds. "Don't worry, I'm not kicking you out of here.

You see, it's always been like this. We are the Bundschuh, Nika, we are revolutionaries, we fight for the people of Rheinland. We fight against the threat our own government poses, but what use would that fight be if we do not protect those people from a threat to could eradicate civilisation itself. That's what the aliens... the Nomads and the Wild, wish to do. We are the Bundschuh and we fight for the people and for some of us that means being the eyes and ears of the Order in Rheinland. That's what I've been tasking you with these past months."

Freya smiles and her presence has an oddly calming effect somehow. She might be strict and unforgiving, but to those who don't let her down she can appear surprisingly charming sometimes.
