***ARCHIVED*** Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.5] ***ARCHIVED*** - Discovery Freelancer Tutorials - 07-29-2015 Discovery Mining Guide
Updated for 4.88.5
Welcome to the wonderful world of mining within the Discovery Mod. This guide serves as the latest version of tutorial designed to inform new and existing players about the changes made by Cannon’s Mining Mod implemented in March of 2011. Many changes were made from 4.8.77 to 4.88.1, and thus a new version of the tutorial is born. Remember, if you have any questions that aren’t answered here, feel free to add them below, and an Angel will be more than happy to assist you. Introduction
For those who are new to mining in Discovery, keep this in mind: - You will need a specialized mining ship to harvest ores. More on this in a moment.
- Mining requires mining turrets in addition to a mining ship. - Finally, you require a mining company ID (for example, DHC) with a matching IFF, or alternatively, an independent “Miner ID’, available for sale on most stations. - Ore is automatically transferred into your cargo bay. You don’t have to tractor in ore as per vanilla / other previous mods. - Only mining turrets are effective for mining. Other weapons are practically useless for mining operations. Setup
First, you will require a specialized mining ship. The following ships have mining bonuses as of 4.88.4 Patch 2 (courtesy of @Karst): Non-house Ore Miners Surveyor Light Fighter: All around weak, with a small loadout and cargo hold. Nimble but otherwise ineffective for mining by yourself - useful as a miner for larger transports. IDs: all except EFL, GMG, GMS, Junkers Ores: all except Helium-3 Scraper Very Heavy Fighter: Stronger than the Surveyor, but still small. Ineffective without a friend in a cargo vessel. IDs: all except EFL, GMG, GMS, Junkers Ores: all except Helium-3 Arrastra Super Heavy Fighter: The strongest of the “generic miner” line, capable of being used as a combat vessel or escort, but very unwieldy. Unrecommended for either combat or mining. IDs: all except EFL, GMG, GMS, Junkers Ores: all except Helium-3 Dromedary: Borderworlds miner IDs: Zoners, IRG, OSI, PRIME, Gammu Artificial Intelligence, Outcasts Ores: Iridium ore, Niobium ore Spatial Super Heavy Fighter: Heavier than the Arrastra with a massive wingspan, this fighter is more useful for combat than anything else. Possible but ineffective to mine in. IDs: all except ALG, EFL, GMG, GMS, Junkers Ores: all except Helium-3 Sunburst Freighter: Given with the default (/restart beginner) restart, the Sunburst has no increased mining bonus but is very cargo efficient for its size. Typically used only for Helium mining. IDs: Generic Miner Ores: Helium Hegemon Large Transport: The most ubiquitous mining vessel, tends to become a bit stuck and is very large for its cargo size. Holds the largest amount of turrets of any mining vessel, but remains a very easy target for pirates. IDs: all except ALG, EFL, GMG, GMS, Junkers Ores: all except Helium-3 Annapurna IMG Transport: A very capable yet small miner, the Annapurna requires a nearby transport to unlock its full effectiveness. Restricted to those with the IMG Ships (Light) tech-cell. IDs: IMG, Mollys, Red Hessians Ores: all CSV: Small junker freighter with little armament or cargo hold. Due to a rear-firing turret, it is practically useless for mining. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap Collector Heavy Fighter: A relatively light Junker craft that may be used to mine scrap, although it is not recommended. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap CSF: Larger cousin of the CSV, with multiple forward-firing mining turret mounts. More practical for a group mining vessel, but not recommended as a standalone craft. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap Correo: Corsair freighter miner. IDs: Corsairs Ores: Xeno Relics Raba: Corsair Artifact miner. IDs: Corsairs Ores: Artifacts Recycler: A large Junker super heavy fighter, the Recycler may be used in a similar respect as the CSF, although its lower cargo hold and larger frame make it an easy target for pirate craft. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap Salvager: Heavily armored with a thin profile, the Junker Salvager is the premier vessel for mining scrap and transporting it through hostile space, especially with its light gunboat powercore and weapon armaments. It may either be used as a transport or as a standalone miner/transport hybrid. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap Pirate Transport: Heavily armored ship capable of mining Artifacts. IDs: Corsairs Ores: Artifacts House Ore Miners Clydesdale Freighter: Bretonian mining freighter. IDs: BMM, The Core Ores: all except Helium-3 Tournez Gallic Light Fighter: A gallic facsimile of the Surveyor. Roughly as effective. Only usable on the GMS or EFL ID. IDs: EFL, GMS Ores: all Courbe Gallic Very Heavy Fighter: Same as above, for the Scraper. Only usable on the GMS or EFL ID. IDs: EFL, GMS Ores: all Plier Gallic Super Heavy Fighter: Same as above, for the Arrastra. Only usable on the GMS or EFL ID. IDs: EFL, GMS Ores: all Rock Badger Gallic Transport: Essentially a smaller gallic Hegemon, this ship is very effective at gathering and transporting ore. Only usable on the GMS or EFL ID. IDs: EFL, GMS Ores: all Anki: A small freighter, similar to the Sunburst in function and size. May be used by Samura, Kishiro, and GMG. IDs: GMG, Kishiro, Kruger (*only He-3), Samura Ores: all* Kamome: A medium-size transport, the Kamome is utilized for Helium-3 collecting. IDs: GMG, Kishiro, Samura Ores: Helium, Helium-3 Garanchou: A small freighter used by the GMG to gather gas in the Sigmas. IDs: GMG, Kishiro Ores: Helium, Helium-3 Rhino Freighter: Liberty light freighter. IDs: DSE, Xenos, The Order, The Core Ores: all except Hellium-3 Ragnar Armored Transport: Rheinland heavy freighter. IDs: ALG, DHC, Kruger Ores: all except Helium-3 Behemoth Medium Transport: Medium-sized Rheinland transport used by ALG and Kruger. IDs: ALG, Kruger Ores: Helium-3, Premium Scrap Next, you will need specialized equipment: mining turrets and a compatible ID. Mining Turrets are sold on most corporate bases and Freeports, as well as Junker bases. They come in two varieties: “Light Mining Arrays”, for fighter/freighter turrets, and “Heavy Mining Arrays”, which fit on the heavier transports. They do virtually no damage in combat, but are the only turrets capable of mining ore effectively. [!] An advanced tip, courtesy of @Jack_Henderson. Mining lasers operate by adding ore to your cargo hold when they strike and destroy a floating chunk of ore. Because of this, there is a chance you can gain increased ore through careful placement of your mining lasers. For example, on the Annapurna IMG freighter, placing mining lasers on every slot except slots one and two will result in a decent increase in ore drop rate. Slots vary between the different vessels, and care should be taken to ensure all mining lasers are aligned so as to attain the maximal ore drop efficiency. A good way to remember this is to keep your mining lasers equidistant from the ore you're shooting. Mining IDs are specific IDs that allow you to mine. Some companies specialize in mining, as well as independent Miners. Finally, some quasi-lawful and unlawful groups have the limited ability to mine select ores. All IDs must be used in tandem with their matching IFF, except in the case of the Miner ID, which may use any IFF (or none at all). Here is a run-down of all the factions available: Bretonia Mining and Manufacturing: A Bretonian mining company that runs most of Bretonia's mining. Specializes in Cobalt, Gold, Beryllium and Niobium. They have operations in Cambridge, Manchester, Omega 3, Leeds and Dublin. BMM can mine the following commodities: Niobium Ore, Beryllium Ore, Gold Ore, Cobalt Ore and Raw Hydrocarbons. Deep Space Engineering: A Liberty company. Specializes in Silver, Copper and Platinum. Has operations in Alberta. DSE can mine the following commodities: Copper ore, Silver ore, Platinum ore, Scrap and Premium Scrap. ALG Waste Disposal: A Rheinland company. Specializes in scrap, premium scrap and toxic waste reclamation. Operations in: New London, Texas, New Berlin, Leeds, Bering, Hudson and Munich. ALG can mine Scrap, Premium Scrap and Toxic Waste. Daumann Heavy Construction: A Rheinland company. Specializes in Uncut Diamonds. They have operations in Omega 11, Dresden, Omega 3, Omega 7 and Munich. Daumann can mine the following commodities: Aluminium Ore, Cobalt Ore, Copper Ore, Uncut Diamonds and Raw Hydrocarbons. Kruger Minerals: A Rheinland mining company. Specializes in Silver and Cobalt. They have operations in Dresden and Omega 7. Kruger can mine the following commodities: Aluminium Ore, Cobalt Ore, Copper Ore, Silver Ore, Uncut Diamonds and Helium 3 Kishiro Technologies: A large Kusari industrial company. They have operations in Sigma 19. Kishiro Technologies can mine the following commodities: Helium-3, Raw Hydrocarbons and Platinum Ore Samura Industries: A Kusari company. Samura can mine the following commodities: Alien Organisms, Helium 3, Raw Hydrocarbons and Platinum Ore Gas Miners Guild: Not affiliated with any house (basically a small house themselves). They have operations in Okinawa, Sigma 13, Sigma 19. The GMG can mine the following commodities: Helium-3 and Alien Organisms. Gallic Metal Service: A Gallic company with a wide range of operations. GMS can mine the following commodities: Aluminium Ore, Beryllium ore, Cobalt ore, Copper ore, Niobium ore, Platinum ore and Raw Hydrocarbons. EFL Oil & Machinery: A Gallic company specializing in Oil and Machinery production. EFL can only mine Premium Scrap, Scrap Metal, and Toxic Waste, similar to their Sirian counterpart, ALG. Junkers: Not affiliated with any house. Specializes in scrap mining. Operations in: New London, Texas, New Berlin. Junkers can mine Scrap and Premium scrap. Independent Miners Guild: A mining company not affiliated with any house. Ore bonuses generally lower than house companies. Specializes in Niobium. Currently has operations in: Tau 23, Tau 37, Dublin, Omega 7, Cambridge. IMG can mine: Beryllium Ore, Copper ore, Cobalt ore, Silver ore, Gold ore and Niobium ore Miner ID: The Miner ID is used for miners who wish to affiliate themselves to any faction. The Miner ID allows mining of any commodity type, at a slower rate, with any affiliation. Note that the use of a Miner ID sets you unfriendly or hostile to most mining corporations, which will make you unable to dock at their bases. Xenos: Liberty unlawful faction. Can mine Copper Ore, Silver Ore, and Premium Scrap in civilian vessels. Red Hessians: Rheinland unlawful faction. Can mine only uncut diamonds. Mollys: Bretonian unlawful faction. Can mine only gold. Corsairs: Hispanic unlawful faction. Can mine Alien Artifacts in a Correo, Raba or Pirate Transport and Xeno Relics in Correo. Outcasts: Hispanic unlawful faction. Can mine Xeno Relics and Niobium Ore in a Dromedary. Mining and Transportation
Follow the above instructions? Great! You’re on track to becoming the next richest person in Sirius! Now, you’ll need to know where to mine, and where to bring it to once you’ve mined it. Mining fields can be found by checking your map - open your map by hitting the F7 key (by default) or the map icon in the top right. Select the “hammer and pickaxe” icon on top of the map, signifying mining fields, and you will see small yellow circles. These signify mining fields (although they do not disclose the type of the yield, you’ll have to determine that for yourself.) You can only gain ore while inside these fields, and ore will only drop from the small floating rocks, not the larger stationary ones. If you are not gaining any ore from the field, it is possible that: - You’re not in a mining field: most mining fields are spheres, and it is possible that you’re above or below the field by a small amount. Set a waypoint if you’re worried this is the case.
- You are not capable of mining the ore effectively. Make sure your ID, IFF, ship, and turret all match what is required to mine that specific type of ore. For example, the “Sabre” VHF with Flashpoints is not going to be an effective mining craft. - The field isn’t active. This is a rarity, but some fields in Discovery are turned off, either for balance purposes or due to their superfluousness. - You have another ship selected, and are filling it, instead of your own hold. CTRL+T, by default, will de-select the current target. If all else fails, contact other players in the field, any member of the [Angels], or players of any of the official mining factions. Any of them would be more than willing to help you. Any questions unanswered may, of course, be left in this thread. The current mining areas include: Aluminium Ore: Two locations: in southern Munich and eastern Picardy. Beryllium Ore: Two locations: in eastern Tau-23 and northeastern Cambridge. Cobalt Ore: Two locations: in north-eastern Omega-7 and southern Omega-3. Copper Ore: Two locations: in south-eastern Omega-7 and south-western Humboldt. Gold Ore: One location: in north-eastern Dublin. Helium-3: One location: the upper two gas miners in B2/3, Sigma-19. Niobium Ore: One location: in north-western Tau-23. Platinum Ore: Two locations: in west-central Nagano and northern Alberta. Silver Ore: Two locations: in north-eastern Omega-7 and southern Humboldt. Uncut Diamonds: One location: the southern-most field in western Omega-11. Premium Scrap: One location: in north-western Texas. Raw Hydrocarbons: Two locations: in south-eastern Omega-3 and western Tau-29. Iridium Ore: One location: in 4G in Omicron Lost. Azurite Ore: One location: in 3F in Omicron Delta. Xeno Relics: One location: in 3G in Omicron Gamma. Note that many of these locations can only be used by certain factions: in specific, Dublin is only usable by GMS and Mollys, although there are other areas for IMG to utilize. Okinawa’s fields may only be used by GMG, although other fields in nearby systems can be used by everyone. Omega-7 is only usable by Daumann and IMG for Copper, Kruger and IMG for Silver, and all three for Cobalt. Once you have your ore mined and inside your cargo hold, you can sell it at a variety of locations. Additionally, many Player Owned Bases both sell and purchase Ore for a price similar to that of nearby stations. Check the Player Owned Bases subforum for more information. Updated: 22nd July 2016 for 4.88.5 Updated by @ RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.1] - Lythrilux - 07-29-2015 Excellent guide (y) RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.1] - Jack_Henderson - 07-29-2015 Very good guide! Kudos. Perhaps you could include the topic of "double hits". Therefore you need create loadouts which have mining lasers at the same distance to the rock that you shoot. The more lasers hit the rock at the same time, the higher the yield. This can easily make a difference of up to 20% in total drop rate. Turret placement for Annapurna: > Slot 1: missile > Slot 2: gun > all other slots: Mining lasers For the Annapurna, it would even decrease your yield, if you had full mining laser loadout because the 2 "not same distance" lasers keep you from scoring multi-hits. It's even more extreme with some freighters that have up to 5 aligned guns. RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.1] - Antonio - 07-29-2015 The amount of work it took must be huge. Kudos for the effort. RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.1] - Wildkins - 07-29-2015 (07-29-2015, 01:04 PM)Jack_Henderson Wrote: Very good guide! Kudos. That's certainly a good point. I had forgotten about the idea of aligning mining lasers, so I'll draft up a small section and include it sometime soon. Thanks everyone for your feedback so far! RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.4p2] - Wildkins - 01-09-2016 A long time coming, but such is the way of Disco. The tutorial has been updated to reflect the recent mining update, as well as implement feedback from prior versions of the Mining Guide. The guide should, as far as I'm aware, be up to date for the current version. If you have any questions or comments, or have feedback to help us improve this guide even more, don't hesitate to drop a post in this thread or leave a PM with either myself or @"The Angels". RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.4p2] - Laz - 01-09-2016 I dont think this is right..... AI get the same bonus as a generic miner? And then PRIME get the same bonus as AI? Also I personally think Mollys would get a better rate when Gold it sorta their thing.... My recommendation: Up Mollys Player faction to 3.0. Change miner iridium bonus to 2.0 Keep AI at 3.0 change PRIME to 4.0 (bear in mind that until the ID is fixed PRIME cant use mining ships anyway.) Code: ; Artificial Intelligence RE: Discovery Mining Guide [4.88.4p2] - Karst - 01-09-2016 The ship overview needs work. Several are missing entirely, some are misleadingly described. IDs: all except EFL, GMG, GMS, Junkers Ores: all except Helium-3 Spatial Super Heavy Fighter: Heavier than the Arrastra with a massive wingspan, this fighter is more useful for combat than anything else. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap Recycler: A large Junker super heavy fighter, the Recycler may be used in a similar respect as the CSF, although its lower cargo hold and larger frame make it an easy target for pirate craft. IDs: Junkers Ores: Premium Scrap House Ore Miners Clydesdale Freighter: Bretonian mining freighter. IDs: BMM Ores: all Tournez Gallic Light Fighter: A gallic facsimile of the Surveyor. IDs: DSE, Xenos Ores: all Ragnar Armored Transport: Rheinland heavy freighter. IDs: ALG, DHC, Kruger Ores: all except Helium-3 Behemoth Medium Transport: Medium-sized Rheinland transport used by ALG and Kruger. IDs: ALG, Kruger Ores: Helium-3, Premium Scrap Descriptions could use an overhaul too but I've left them largely untouched for now. Also not included are non-ores like artifacts because who cares about those lol, and the Generic Miner ID which can actually use every mining ship (except in the case of the Sunburst, which only the Miner ID can use).
