Discovery going Standalone / hosting Freelancer.ISO on our site - sindroms - 01-28-2016 I think it is about time now. I am sure someone with more legal knowledge regarding France can correct me on this, but perhaps we can risk one ''Cease and desist'' strike regarding the project that is Discovery Freelancer. Now that MS themselves have nuked even the digital download page for Freelancer, it is rather clear that their interest in the game has lessened. Unless GoG decides to add FL to its list, we should be able to at least attempt to include the game inside the installer. Right now the only legal way to obtain the disc is ordering from Amazon or Ebay, both of which is not possible for everyone and their stock has no relation to MS. MS would not see any profit from purchases made from those retailers anyway. Before you say it is not possible, the Disco server used to host the ISO anyway. EDIT: There is also the subject of torrents right now. Recently there was a flood of people asking on how to obtain the ISO on my channel. It turns out that most safe torrent sites these days do not seem to have Freelancer at all. The ISO is actually getting rare. It makes it problematic for us to obtain new people if they themselves cannot find the game for which the mod was made. This is sort of necessary. We have no control over sources of distribution. We might need to become one. RE: Including the game install as a part of the mod - Hannibal - 01-28-2016 wouldn't a link to a torrent be better?legally .. there's no point to push our luck because everyone knows how to obatain a copy.. Everyone knows how to obtain a copy if they need to, but just having it included in the mod install would make it much more accessible to new players. You have no idea how many people on YT comment regarding how to obtain the game if torrents are blocked. RE: Including the game install as a part of the mod - Oldum - 01-28-2016 That depends, for as I couldn't find one, most torrent sites I know and trust to use didn't have them, or had noone seeding it for months, fortunately I found an old backup of it, thus I have one. But if I'd loose that, I don't really know where I would get one. RE: Including the game install as a part of the mod - jammi - 01-28-2016 The sites that do still actively host freelancer are sketchy as hell... I'm on the fence really. Bundling the install would make it easier to ensure people had a clean install, and would make the mod a hell of a lot more appealing if it was advertised as a standalone on Modb. As ever there's the risk of drawing attention to ourselves with legal action which we absolutely can't afford RE: Including the game install as a part of the mod - evanz - 01-28-2016 http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/windows-games/freelancer/ chrome can flair this site up, but works fine with firefox etc i suggest people grab whilst they can RE: Including the game install as a part of the mod - EmotionEngine - 01-28-2016 Staff should compose a formal letter to discuss the issue and request permission to do so from the IP/copyright/license holder(s); this would require much lengthy legal discussion. I expect any successful outcome would be a very intricate and stern legal agreement. For serious interest sake I'd inquire as to how much they would sell the IP/copyright/license for and under what conditions. I put forth this idea a few years ago also stating identical benefits, legal concerns and the difficulties it alleviates for new players; I'm somewhat dismayed the issue is where it was then Edit: Trustworthy Freelancer torrents are active, looking at a torrent Index there are 9 torrents with at least 1 seed I can confirm 3 of these are legit from downloading previously, the oldest being 9 years old is the source of my ISO Then again posting a link and guide to the torrent isn't a neat solution RE: Including the game install as a part of the mod - Findarato Veneanar - 01-28-2016 Surely we have someone around here with legal knowledge. If this doesn't become a thing, it would be a good idea to include information on how to get the game in the mod download, maybe in the disco installer, and we should really have some community hosted torrents of it. They claimed to have even lost the source code and have no intention of looking for it. They don't respond to queries about the game, the site has been dead for a long time, the servers have been down for years and there've been intermittent attempts to get information from them for years. They don't care. There's even been a serious, tangible attempt to buy the rights to Freelancer. Nothing. It's highly unlikely to get anything from the company about this game. |
