New Commods- infantry, marines, etc - cal823 - 11-07-2008

Seeing as how it looks like war is maybe going to become a part of discovery (i hope) it would be great to see new commods for war time militaries

Liberty Marines 1 cargo each (soldiers dont take up as much space as civilians due to less comfort reqs)
The Liberty Marine Core is one of the best trained and most versatile divisions of the Liberty Military. It is one of the only fighting forces in liberty that employs not only soldiers, but space and atmospheric pilots aswell. These Marines are of the soldier kind, highly trained in boarding actions against both stations and capital ships, as well as planetary landings, as well as both defensive and offensive actions. A single Liberty Marine Soldier is often worth 5 of the enemy. Only Liberty Marine Core and Liberty Navy ships may carry these elite soldiers, and deployment of these soldiers to foreign systems is prohibited without proper authorisation.

Liberty Infantry Soldiers (1 cargo each)
The Liberty Army is a well trained and organised division of the Liberty Military, tasked with the defense of the surface of all of liberties populated worlds in a war time situation. The average infantry soldier is armed with a reliable Pulse Rifle, as well as combat armour, fragmentation grenades and emergency rations. They are rarely deployed outside of Liberty, as the invasion or occupation of a foreign planet is a rare and dire response indeed, and a massive undertaking, however, it may become neccesary. Only Liberty Marine Core and Liberty Navy ships may carry these elite soldiers, and deployment of these soldiers to foreign systems is prohibited without proper authorisation.

Atmospheric Bombers (10 cargo each)
These small craft are incapable of space flight, and are designed to be deployed to bomb planetside targets.
Only Military Ships may carry these craft without authorisation (however, they may be stolen)

Atmospheric Fighters (6 cargo each)
When missiles and ground defense systems are insufficient, Atmospheric fighters must be launched to stop atmospheric bombers. These nimble and small craft are capable of dogfighting and interception within a planets atmosphere.
Only Military Ships may carry these craft without authorisation (however, they may be stolen)

Heavy Arms (1 cargo each)
These weapons are much heavier than light arms, and are designed for military use against vehicles, fortified positions and fighters.

Rheinlander Elite Soldiers (2 cargo each)
These soldiers are the best of the best of the Rheinlander Military's ground forces. They are well trained, well equiped, and capable of anything from Boarding Actions to covert ops. They are armed with a range of powerful weapons, from exo suits with powerful gaus chainguns, to plasma cannons. Only Rheinland Military Ships are authorised to carry these soldiers.

Descent Pods (Special slot on certain ships rated for personell transport, and on some capships)
These pods can be used to deploy troops, combat vehicles and supplies to begin and support an invasion, as well as to insert special operatives.

Bretonian Grenadiers (1 cargo each)
These soldiers are well trained and highly disciplined soldiers from the planets of bretonia. Their discipline is legendary among the sirius sector, and they have been instrumental in fighting Molly Terrorists on the worlds of bretonia, and have also been recently deployed to ships and stations on the kusari border, where they have had some experience against kusari troops in boarding actions. Only Bretonian Armed Forces Vessels are authorised to carry these troops.

Kusari Infantry

Corsair Buccaneers

Outcast Infantry

Ammunition

Munitions

etc

These kind of commods could even allow for new factions to open up, such as a "Liberty Marine Corps" and stuff like that. A marine faction would have LFs and HFs (to defend troop transports and provide support for invasions/ops) freighters, armoured transports, and troopships (like prison liners?) to carry troops and stuff to deployment zones, and bombers to support ground war, as well as a small amount of capships as command vessels.
Even without a new faction or two, the movement of troops and stuff would be great war rp, as opposing forces would go to great lengths to prevent these troops from getting anywhere near their planets, and cap ships could carry marines as their security against boarding actions, and to be deployed to stations/planets which cause them trouble. Descent pods could be launched at planets (only with authorisation from the appropiate faction) to rp a faction attempt to deploy troops in an invasion of another houses planets.

Looks like a good idea to me, although with the Bretonians, I'd like to see Gravtroopers as well, which I included in a story I wrote for a character I made.

Basicly they're troops that use atmospheric suits and small disposable machines that temporarily negate gravitational pull (same technology as the rings you see propping ships up in spaceports), which would allow them to drop into enemy bases from low-orbit. Basicly I designed them as futuristic paratroopers - a equivilent to todays British Parachute Regiment.

All the major factions should have two soldier types if any get them, methinks. Corsairs could get Corsair Raiders and Corsair Marauders maybe?

I Like jammi:)
Give the grav troopers red helmets (Red Devils ftw):)

Yus, and planetside they get the Maroon Beret! Out of interest, do you know why the Red Devils were named thus? I heard it was because of a prank they pulled on Red Arrows:P

I really like the idea, but here are a couple of suggestions I think you should take into account:

I'd make them more generic. I like the idea, but I think it should be just "Marines", "Infantry", "Gravtroopers" etc; after all, someone may (for example) RP a paramilitary organization, and may command personnel which received a lot of training, but are not part of a house military. Also, orbital crafts should require more cargo space, so that a fighter can't carry them. Oh, and they should be RP-only commodities, so the prices should be the same on every planet.

Nice idea, it would add a sense of rp to it, including the chance to capture POWs

The POW idea is very good actually... That would require commodities to be spcialised to each House as well. Plus having specialised troops would show each Houses particular quirks and specialities. For example, in my story, I've written Bretonia is the only House to use Gravtroops, with the other Houses using Drop-ships (small pod type things, like drop-pods from Warhammer 40K).

Specialisation is good, because it adds variety.

Hm, that's true indeed...though we still should also create generic ones, in my opinion.

Cool idea. It's much more RP to have a fleet with marines in the cargo hold during an invasion.

Good idea, i like it :D

BTW. they where called the Red Devils by the Germans for thier legendery fighting qualities
