I had this idea that could possibly put more RP behind capital ships instead of having to dream up more complex stories behind them.

For example, in modern times throughout our waters we have ships that don't only have a name but a number designating perhaps their design number or the restoration of the ship's name.

e.g. Queen Mary II or the 2nd Dreadnought of the British Navy

Perhaps we, as players, could insert this into discovery for a potentially better roleplay experience. It isn't much of a change or an improvment, i figured that by submitting this idea that some people may want to take it into account.

An example of this imprinted into freelancer would be...

RMC Donau II
or... LNC Phoenix II

Think about it...

That depends. Sometimes those with names of older ships, such as 'Enterprise', don't attach a number.

When it comes to royalty, the number is often attached to refer to a specific monarch of that name.

The additional number naming are more common on fishing vessels than most others but it still could be encorperated.

Personally some people do name there ships like that, but mainly just through a name of a town like LNS-Sacramento...but its really up to the player to decide.

The QM II is named after the second Queen Mary...Usually, a naval vessel's name is a rehash of an old name, any idea how many Ark Royals there have been?

Naval vessels are often named after influential military leaders (Bismark, King George IV), virtues or ideals (Victory, Indomitable) or (more rarely) geographical locations (which seems to have been the route taken in FL shipnames) (Kent, Texas).
More interesting, however, are the lines that have slightly non-standard names. My Bretonian GB is named for one of the destroyers of force H (task group that sank the Bismark), many of which carried names reminiscent of eastern european peoples (Cossack, Tartar).

Just some thoughts that might help people come up with a name for their ships.
