Light Fighter / Interceptors discussion - SnakeLancerHaven - 04-23-2016

Now I know such threads have been done alot of times and I think it never has been considered, so Haste if you read this look closely.

Seriously over years the Light Fighters aka Interceptors have been rarely, rarely rarely rarely rarely rarely used. I'm being honest here, that's not just my opinion I've seen others aswell. The LFs should be exactly those types that are being produced ALOT and thus explode and get rekt ALOT. That's why it would be deployed more in battle as obviously you can spam them, but here we have VHFs all over the place, because why? The LFs got horribly nerfed in the past.

HORRIBLY nerfed, they're useless, why don't you just remove them from the mod? I know some of you hardcores are gonna be all like "Pfff I use codies class 6 and rekt peopl m8 wat are u talkin bout" no this is not it, I've had my fights too with codes but that's not the exact feel of a LF that we had in the past.

Can we like make them useful again? Seriously, I honestly think the LFs should be the Fighters that should be more often deployed and even PvPwhores should be fighting each other with it instead of VHFs. VHFs would represent more Squadron Commanders or whatever (don't get me wrong not saying anything against VHF vs VHF fights). The VHF against VHF fights it's alright as long as we can also see some LFs in a Squadron against each other.

Please throw your own opinions about current LFs and their roles aswell as their current value in the game.

EDIT: You know back in the days I loved to log a LF now and then, but now it's just garbage and all you see is always VHF vs VHF on snub fights which is getting boring.

Having mass produced light fighters would make more sense if every ship wasn't eternal but even in games like EVE you rarely see light fighters doing anything but recon and interdiction/interception, most of the fights involve cruisers and battlecruisers (basically our HF and VHFs). When you factor in freelancers arcade style fighting, the speed of the LF's and shield running nonsense it becomes clear why so few chose to fly them.

Personally I'd like to see the House light fighters slot reused and turned into police cruisers, something special to give the ailing factions a boost.

Only way Light Fighters will be used more is to allowed them to be unique in some way .
How to do that ?
Well , they are interceptors , and they should be used in that role , to Intercept ships , with CD for example , but since almost all ships can use CD , only way is to Remove all CD types from all ships except most basic CD , which is not really effective , and give Light Fighters ability to mount all CD types . With only LF be able to equip CD like Train and Reinforced people will be using them more .
Also incrising LF truster speed to lets say 225 will be a good boost .

I would like to summon @SeaFalcon here, as he is the one who greatly impressed my back in 2010 with his LF fighting and who made me into LFs all since then and up to this day.

IMO, LFs are great ships. Yes, they eat mines, yes pro-fighters can still outturn you, but nevertheless those ships are great at surviving. Especially in mass fights. They are one of the ships that let you dodge incoming fire when dogfighting. I don't really know how do they behave with mines+CD or torps or missiles, because usually and mostly I go for guns-only.

I have survived @Silver in a Hussar back in 2012! I have survived and returned home on my own in a failed Corsair raid to Leeds, when we were crushed by battle Cydesdales...

I would like to say that making them distinct to some role is not really a good way to do it. They should remain in the fighters family, there is no need in making unique weapons, gear, etc. This won't balance them.

I think their thrust speed when not cruising should be increased to 225 imo, That would make them very good at avoiding pretty much everything!

But Im not an expert and that might just make some of them too hard to hit!!

They should have differing armour types that have increased resistance against a specific damage type, though I'm not sure if that's possible.

Anti-mines to prevent being nullified by that one stray mine or one effortless CD/mine combo, at the expense of overall armour.
Anti-missiles/projectiles at the expense of gun resistance.
Anti-guns at the expense of being more susceptible to projectiles and mines.
Radiation, ramming damage and other damage amplifications would help offset the advantage they might get, perhaps?

I'm really doubting if that's possible due to the game engine's limitations, but there might be a chance?

It would make for some interesting ways to specialize playstyles and make LFs more desirable, and make them actually more potent in a fight. I'm sure more people would fly them if you could choose your own armour type besides going just for plain universal. ^^

The problem with light fighters is that they're very unrewarding to fly. You have decent dps but a horrible powercore so you're forced to manage your shots not to run out of it all the time, you're extremely vulnerable on both shields and hull and you are always in fear of getting instakilled by a nuke ram or similar. In return, you get more manouverability and smaller size which makes you nearly unkillable if you watch out for stuff like rams, mines and missiles. Shieldrunning light fighters are impossible to kill, especially the top tier ones like a Liberator or a Wyrm.

Balancing them has been tried many times already. The recent buff giving them 900m/s guns resulted in them being too overpowered and everyone started flying them. Increasing thrust speed would cause the same issue to happen again. Super fast high-turnrate missiles would also not be healthy and people would abuse them.

Overall, they are fine. I've discussed it recently with someone (can't remember who) and I said that for example 5 Liberators who'd tryhard to the max like shieldrunning and avoiding mines as much as possible could kill twice the amount of VHFs, just because it's so hard to hit them with guns. The only reason people don't use them is because they're too stressful to fly. One mistake and you're gone, and it involves too much tryharding.

When devs were making new guns for lf they made one that was 1.00 rate of fire.

That was a great gun.

Sea Serpent is the WORST LF in the game. It's a VHF sized Light Fighter. Pretty dumb imo. The recent changes didn't really help it much.

Sea Serpent needs to be made into an HF/LF hybrid i.e HF stats with something like a 390m/s cruise speed

Exactly my point here. The nerf of Powercore I suppose was also something that made them useless, give them back their old powercore maybe? Also the 1.00s as Nomnom said, they were like realy nice alternative to actually fly a LF.

@Lythrilux Same like the Coalition Partisan, HF sized ship realy horrible.
