Piracy Question - Gunbladelad - 04-27-2016

Hey there folks.

I recall in the past that it was against the rules in Discovery to actively engage in piracy when in any cap ship larger than a gunboat - at least those were the rules back in 4.85 and 4.86.

After some RP activity this morning, I was wondering if that was still the case? Note that I'm not complaining - it was an enjoyable - if brief - bit of RP that was going on at the time.

Any vessel can engage in piracy afaik.

The old rule was that a ship larger than a GB cant engage a transport.
The rule is no more, though.

Cheers for that - I was just wanting confirmation, that was all. I've been kinda out of the loop Discovery-wise since the old UK server went down.

yes pirating in a cruiser is more common these days anyways.

RE: Piracy Question - Karst - 04-27-2016

It was not the right decision, in my opinion. I understand the issue of smugglers going "lol can't touch this" to lawful cruisers, but allowing piracy in cruisers was a harmful decision.

By only 1 P.M. today I had encountered and destroyed three pirates in Rheinland - all of them cruisers. Rheinland in particular seems to be suffering from this.
While I do believe a skilled pirate should have the upper hand against transports, there's just no balance possible between cruisers and transports.

I wouldn't go for a re-introduction of the full on ban on engaging transports with capital ships, but something a long the lines of "cannot engage in piracy when flying a cruiser or battleship" would certainly improve things.

I can definitely agree with that Karst - especially since a single shot from a cruiser - even a "warning shot" - will take the shields down to zero - thereby qualifying in the rules as a "hostile act" (which in the rules is defined as any action that takes the shields down to below 50%). As a former admin back on the UK server I do agree that it is unbalanced - but that lawful factions should be able to take action against smugglers, so I can see both sides of the arguement. Perhaps a little work is needed to balance things out in that regard.

While I was on the receiving end of a few shots which were RP'd by the pirating cruiser as "keeping the shields down until I paid up" he held off otherwise. Like I said though, I enjoyed the RP banter we had back & forth for a few minutes, so no harm no foul on that end. (I'll always go for RP over PvP - but I don't mind being shot at if the RP behind it is enjoyable for everyone involved.)

You stand a better chance though if you use a cruiser against a trader convoy than a bomber, no?
I dont know fully about this. At 1 to 1 then sure, a Cruiser is OP.
But still.... a bomber is OP to a trader too at 1 on 1 unless the trader as Cau8 and can run away.

There are also trade ships that can take on more than others.

So... No sure. I'm on the fence on this one.

Edit: A single shot from a bomber will take your sheilds down too.

RE: Piracy Question - Lythrilux - 04-27-2016

I don't see what's so problematic about pirate Cruisers. In fact they thrust more slowly than transports do as well.

I don't really understand why a pirate would pick a Cruiser over a transport of some sort. You thrust faster, easier to do more damage and you can even demand cargo and sell it yourself. And an unprepared Cruiser will find it extremely hard to deal with 4 or more heavily armoured battletransports shooting it with Charon turrets.
