Alaska in Modern Discovery - Lythrilux - 05-14-2016

Pretty much everyone knows what the Alaska system is. It was the highly secure system guarded by the Liberty Navy and the Liberty Security Force, because it directly bordered an Omicron (Omicron Minor). This link placed Liberty dangerously close to the Nomads, therefore the system had to be kept guarded and highly restricted. This is why the system has Nomad NPCs, as they're seeping into Alaska via Minor.

However if you look at Alaska today it paints a different picture than the above overview. Until recently Alaska was separated from the Omicrons by several Sigma systems and Ellesmere. Now, Alaska doesn't connect to any of those systems at all and it's only connections are New York, Virginia and New Hampshire.

So what does this all mean for Alaska? Well, you now have a system that doesn't fit it's lore at all. How are there Nomad NPCs in Alaska, if the system is nowhere near the Omicrons nor can you reach it via the Omicrons anymore? Why is Liberty still guarding Alaska so heavily if there's not a looming alien threat one jump away? By adding buffer systems and chopping off the connections, we've made Alaska lose its own purpose and have even hampered it's vanilla origins.

I have several suggestions to remedy this:

1. Bring back the Alaska <> Omicron Minor connection. Char said that this wouldn't happen due to economic reasons, but surely the economy can just be re-balanced? Gameplay wise such a short connection worked well for creating activity and allowing Omicron factions (if they have appropriate ID lines) quick access to Liberty and vice versa for Liberty factions. And of course the roleplay justifications speak for themselves.

2. Add a Nomad Hive of sorts to Alaska? Whilst this could create a justification for the Nomad NPCs, it'd still leave plot holes unexplained.

3. Re-design the system for a less militarised purpose. I'm not entirely sure what that could entail precisely, but a start would be deleted the Nomad NPCs.

Second option looks optimal, some Nomad installation could explain why things happened as the did in Vanilla as well as give wilds and nomads more opportunities to terrorize Liberty. Connection to Bremen is quite similar timewise to get from Liberty to Omicrons and people don't have to cross 2 guard systems which always was way too oorpish.

You know what I kinda miss?

LNS and Order cap players huddling and competing over the Minor-Alaska hole to farm Nomad battleships.

I miss the battles between LNS and Order a lot in Alaska.
Linking it to minor would be awesome and having order go in to start trouble would really boost fun interactions like old times.

Maybe put a jumphole available for snubs and freighters only, like we have in Connecticut? That'd remove the whole economy problem.

I was never around to experience this, But it sounds like a brilliant idea nonetheless!

We don't. We're kind of trying to avoid conflict with the LN. That was other people's decision, and Order| has avoided directly conflict with any house Military for awhile. It goes against much of what we stand for.

Not many of us really want those days specifically back. But yes, linking Alaska to Minot would be a fantastic idea. Give the LN a way into the Omicrons; Rheinland and Kusari have direct links. It's about time Liberty regained theirs.
