The tutorials for wine are broken and not very easy to follow, I tried that but the list of dll's is a broken link so you cannot find out which ones to copy and add. Virtualbox is easy to install and run and you have the virtue of running FL on windows inside Linux instead of a possibly buggy wine.

From my personal point of view, it varies from system to system, depending on the type of distro you're currently operating from. Nevertheless, i myself was successfully able to emulate Discovery through the wine on the Linux Ubuntu 14.04 using this step-by-step as an example for applying .dll workarounds. Works just fine and stable so far, without heavy lagging. Best regards, if you consider this endeavour worth trying (it really is).

What hardware do you have? I've tried this before on Kubuntu 15.04 - 16.04 and I know others who have tested it on various Ubuntu versions and we have all experienced unplayable FPS.

I have one set up on an acer cloudbook with an external laptop hdd for more space with mint 17.3 and windows 7 x64 guest. One set up on a compaq NX6125 laptop running mint 18 host and xp pro guest and an HP z210 workstation running mint 18 and win 7 x64 guest.

I tried the wine setup here: http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=48363&highlight=discovery+linux/ but it never worked right for me.

That's weird then. My laptop is substantially more powerful than either of those, and yet I only get around 15-20 FPS playing Freelancer in VBox. That being said, it's definitely an improvement on what I was getting the last time I tried it, presumably 3D performance has been improved in recent VBox Additions updates. The problem could be that the Intel Graphics installer still doesn't support Xenial; I haven't actually tried 3D gaming on my Linux install since I created my Windows partition some months ago specifically to play Discovery on my laptop. Back on 15.10 when I did have the drivers installed performance on WoW 4.3.4 running in Wine (using PlayOnLinux) was good, so I might try that again on my current Xenial install to benchmark how much the lack of drivers decreases performance. I'll also double-check the guide to make sure the WIndows 7 VM I set up a long time ago has exactly the same settings as dictated in the guide, although from a quick scan through they look correct.

Hello.

If you're using VirtualBox for gaming then you have absolutely no clue how virtual machines work.

Bye.

With multiplayer working? I fiddled with Wine for several weeks trying to get it working to no avail.
