Suspicious Circumstances - Ichiru - 09-17-2016

Outside Oberst's Quarters, Bruchsal Base, Frankfurt
17/09/823 AS, 1315 Station time

A disheveled Alexander Fuchs hammered at the door in front of him. The dark circles under his eyes had grown since he was relieved of this station on Bielefeld, and his hair had developed a grey streak from doing double shifts on patrol duty for the past month. Furthermore, an Aktivist had not shown up for her patrol and the wing had been one fighter short. To put it in simple terms, he was pissed.

"Oberst! We need to speak, now." his harsh voice rang throughout the corridor.

Hardly a diplomatic entry, but diplomatic was never Alex's style.

Nika was tired. She'd spent all night awake, first telling Hannah off about the way she'd gotten rid of Rorken - although she did have to admit that her way of removing the evidence was... Final. The only problem was that she'd forgotten to remove her from the schedules. But she had taken her as the responsible pilot for Rorken, and the distress call of the shuttle was properly displayed, so she could just put it off as a minor computer bug.

As she heard Kommandant Fuchs shout through the hallways, she turned around. She was just about to enter her quarters to finally get some sleep.

"What is it, Fuchs? If this is about the discussion about when to do the Eltmann supplies, I am working on it. And you should also not forget that I'm not on duty at the moment."

Her voice was harsh, but not insultingly so. It sounded more like she was tired - which she was.

Alexander eyed the woman stood before him. It was mid-afternoon, why would someone be tired at this hour? However, he was on a war path, and launched into what could only be described as an Eistochter-tier tantrum. This had been a bad habit that had developed as a result of semi-frequent contact with said woman, as well as being forced to work with the lazy Aktivists on Bielefeld that had frequently decided to sleep instead of going to their patrols.

"First of all, I have been working double shifts for the past month, and specifically put in a request with Kommandant Wolf to be put on reduced duty for the next two weeks to make up for it. This has been ignored, and I want it rectified. It is very difficult to coordinate fighter wings when you've gotten a total of four hours of sleep over the past week.

Apart from that, I cannot find Aktivist Feinen. She was scheduled to be on patrol with me for the 1200 patrol, and she did not show up. I had to fly a man short in a 3 man wing. What's more, when I got back to Bruchsal I scoured the base for her in order to reprimand her as she should be, and she is nowhere to be seen."

Alexander at this moment decided to bluff. Eistochter and Klugmann took Aktivists out on missions without telling the Kommandants before, and he had a suspicion that Haupt had done the same thing.

"I think you know where my missing Aktivist is, Haupt. Where is she? I'm not going to have my pilots being sent off on your personal errands when they are required to be working. We're running with minimal resources as it is, and I don't need espionage or whatever the hell it is you think you're doing taking them up."

Alexander attempted to bring his breathing back to normal, realising he had been shouting himself red at the Oberst for a very long amount of time. Perhaps he was more like Eistochter than he would like to be.

Nika's resignation turned to fury in a matter of seconds. Fuchs was no the only one here who had been involved with Freya, and she knew the Witch far better than he ever would. And she also had a pretty big impact on her. When then accused her of not following protocol, in a tone that was far from appropriate - and she was never a friend of military protocol, that had to be added - she ended her half-friendly tone.

"First of all, Kommandant, I am not the one calling the general shifts. I am the person that tells the people to do the shifts. Go and rage at Wolf for that, that's more appropriate. Second, and more importantly, Aktivist Feinen has been away tonight on getting Professor Hans Rorken from Kreuzberg, and has been ambushed by a Military patrol on the way. If you'd checked with care, Fuchs, you'd have found her in sickbay. And the fact that you've been flying with one Aktivist short isn't my fault. I sent out the order this morning, and I sincerely hope this was a computer glitch rather than your failing to see an internal memo of mine. Because otherwise, Kommandant Fuchs, we might have to talk about you getting a new job."

She had turned the tables on him in just a few seconds. This was an important matter, and she was worried about the problems that might follow - but Fuchs was a nuisance, not more.

Alexander paused for a moment. He did not check his messages that morning as he was running late for a Kommandant's meeting. He elected to not tell the now incredibly annoyed Annika Haupt about this, though a much more pressing question entered his mind, and all thoughts of being overworked flew away.

"I hope you just failed to mention it, but are you telling me that you sent a single Aktivist by herself to go transport a high-ranking member of the Bundschuh with no escort? What's more, if Aktivist Feinen is in the sick bay, then where is Rorken?. If he was brought onto the station in an injured state, I would've been told about it. I suppose the only other option is that we've managed to lose the man, which I'm sure we both know is really, really not a good thing right now, you know with your big address and the election coming up so soon."

This time Alexander spoke a lot more quietly, but also with sincere concern. If the Professor has gone missing, it will reflect incredibly poorly on the Widerstandsarmee as a whole.

Nika's anger wasn't even close to being gone, but she managed to repress it for a few moment. She had no doubt that Fuchs had missed the memo, it was evident that he did forget a few things at times.
His question however resonated in her mind. Of course she was aware that Rorken's disappearance wouldn't reflect well on the Armee, but there was nothing you can do about being ambushed by the feds.

"Well first of all, no, you wouldn't necessarily have been told about it. Think about it, you apparently haven't been told that Aktivist Feinen was on a personal assignment as well." The dry comment fulfilled a double purpose. For one it would show Fuchs that he was under close watch, and that the failing of the memo had been noticed. For the second however, it served to establish Nikas authority.
"You seem to be unaware of the procedures on Bruchsal, Fuchs. Here we can't afford to dispatch entire patrol wings to get counselors and politicians over here. Oh wait, you do. I seem to recall that you've been the last one to ship Rorken here, without cover mind you. He complained about you, by the way."
Nika left Rorken's death unspoken first. Both of them pretty much knew that he was dead. What she did, however, was turn to Fuchs entirely and eye him closely, as if inspecting him. There was something calculating in her gaze, something distant.

"Rorken may have been upset about my choice of route last time he was transported here, but at least he got here safely."
Alexander's resolve faltered, he was very tired. Being overscheduled for such a long time was beginning to take its toll. He stared into space for a short while then returned his gaze to Nika.
"As far as I know, he's dead. And like it or not we're going to be held responsible."
The world seemed to stop for a second. Alex was pulling what he assumed to be another bluff, but as he spoke the word dead a chill was sent down his spine, and he felt as if he had announced something terrible to everything nearby.
"Besides, I was a Kommandant at the time, and Feinen is still an Aktivist. Proper protocol doesn't mean sending them alone on such dangerous missions. You'll hear from me next when I announce my candidacy."
Alex turned on his heel and marched down the hallway towards his quarters. He needed to sleep.
