Faction Discontinued: The Angels - sindroms - 03-28-2017

Good day.

This has been a topic amongst the admin team for the last few months and last weekend with a unanimous vote, we have decided to forcibly discontinue the Angels player faction as it stands right now.

To describe the situation fully, we have agreed that the task of helping newbies should not be the purpose of one specific faction. Doing so sends the wrong message to the rest of the community and discourages players from attempting to aid new players to integrate into the community, often disregarding them because ''we have a whole dedicated admin-backed faction for that''. The overall situation with the Angels was also looked into when a month ago, a player tried to take the faction over in order to deal with the bulk of applicants wishing to help.

The Angels as an ingame ID and faction are hereby disbanded and the current changes are as thus:

All [Angels] Tagged ships are in Bastille and the Angels access to the teleport command has been removed, so will be their mentioning in the server MOTD. Many of your ships have Neutral IDs and admin equipment such as scanners and shields. That, along with many instances of non-standard effects does not allow us to let you to keep your ships in their current state - please contact us via player request to regain your funds on these ships as well as in cases where the ships you chose as your angels are collectible - MK I fighters and such.

As for forum side of things, the Angels will become a honorary forum title that anyone can obtain by doing exactly that - actively helping new players. Their Newbie Helping Logs will be made a public thread where anyone can post with their logs and attempts to help new players on our server. Furthermore, within the span of the next month, we will be looking into possibilities to offer special benefits and admin-help for factions that specialized in helping new players in the game - we would like to remind you that factions who look in doing so do not necessarily need to be only moneymaking ones. Individual players may seek inspiration from the existing archived Angels threads on how to approach and help newbies.

We hope that this change will benefit the newbies and encourage the rest of our active community members to remember how hard the first steps were for them and how the aid of the rest of the playerbase helped them in the long run.

~Admin team.

Well this is personally a good idea because frankly i was wondering how bored the user was and with being asked so many silly questions for only a few individuals to handle

The Angels were a good thing, but the faction died, so I support this decision fully. The player trying to take over the faction was only doing that to help it survive, since leadership was absent and interest was almost zero from most members.

In any case, I have helped countless newbies from my own chars ever since I returned, so making this an admin supported activity is something I really appreciate.

Good idea. We need to get Discovery out of the attitude that it's here for the people with the longest join dates. Nope - we need to be here for the noobs.

The term 'newbie' seems to be kinda inappropriate and has some stigma around the word, same with 'noob' etc - why not use New Players, Beginners or newcomers, which is far friendlier terms? Just an observation.

Inexperienced Gentlepersons?

Really good idea, Nyx.

In my experience, new people put the highest effort in.

Yes.

@Auzari Newbie is friendly. Noob is the bad one. Nitpicking for terms to use seems a bit unnecessary.

Not really, newb has been used as a provocative term many times before. Even so, it's more professional to avoid slang. It looks more inviting to say "help for beginners" instead of "help for newbies"

Fair enough. I can see how that would help. It's just that I don't see how occasionally saying newbie instead can be seen as something negative. I've never once seen that term used negatively. Even the newbies I meet tend to say they're newbies, not beginners or newcomers. The only problem is "noob", really. Newbie is neutral at most.
