In Extremis - oZoneRanger - 04-02-2017

It had been more than a month since the letter "G" had been acid washed off the side of his ship and replaced with a "V". The simple days of sub-contracting cargo contracts were over. The ship had undergone a quick but extensive retro fit and weapons package upgrade at Baltimore Shipyard. Extra capitol ship armor, heavy transport turrets and a mobile medical unit, had come at a cost to the crew quarters, mess hall and a fair amount the available cargo space. Ray Vaughn knew the ship would never again be profitable as a cargo hauler.

The ship and its crew had recently been drafted into the great Navy of The Republic of Liberty, under some obscure "hardship" clause that allowed the government to commandeer the ships of independent contractors and draft the crew into service with the navy, if danger to the Republic was deemed to be great or "In Extremis".

The crew of the Bison transport ship was now expected to do twice the work for half the pay, and live in barracks style berthing quarters that offered almost no privacy. They now had half the accommodations for a normal sized transport crew and they had been dispatched a contingent of 6 Marines, a Signal Intelligence Lieutenant from the Department of Military Intelligence and two EMTs. Quarters were cramped, and the new shipmates were finding it hard to find common ground.

Long haul cargo crews had a tendency to become attached to the ships they manned. Crew quarters on the ship had been individual for the most part and personalized, the mess hall turned into a living room and a small section of the cargo hold had been transformed into a gym and a paddle court. All of that was now gone. The crew had been at the receiving end of so much of the BisonĀ“s redesign that they hardly felt like they were on the same vessel anymore. Ship Crews became superstitious with any small minor change made to a shipm and a name change was the biggest change you could make. Changing the name of a ship was something that had to be done with a certain amount of reverence and ritual.

To just erase the one letter with acid wash and hastily replace it with another sloppily hand painted one was more of a symbolic last straw, than it was a real offense. It was due only to the fact that the name Galiant was already assigned and registered and rather than dish out resources and time, it was decided somewhere up the chain of command to just swap out one letter for another. To the crew the name change and how it was done came across as disrespectful and it laid the ground work for the Ill mood of the people on board.

For the marines, it was business as usual. They were use to small quarters and no personal space. They went were they were told and did what was asked. They wondered why the transport crew looked at them with such disdain, as if they were personally responsible and the ones to blame for all of the recent developments. For the most part, the marines resented babysitting a cargo transport, most hoping for destinations where action was a guarantee, but if that is what was ordered of them, then that is what was to be done.

Captain Ray Vaughn, could faintly hear the discussion that had been going on in the crew mess hall, down the main corridor leading away from the bridge. It would probably be some minor issue, over where coffee cups were to be stored or something irrelevant and petty, and there was not much he could do about it at the moment, as his attention was all on exiting the trade lanes at planet New London and making the switch towards the Dublin gate.
"...New contact captain, BPA opening up a channel to us."
"Put it through.."

[30.03.2017 16:10:27] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Good evening sir
[30.03.2017 16:10:31] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Good day Officer

They were 2 weeks into the operation to bring supplies to the Essex in Dublin, and the radio conversations were down to the basic routine of acknowledging ship presence in the same space for the most part. The BPA being aware of the supply efforts to the Essex, expedited Navy transport ships through the lanes above the rest of the cargo traffic. The Ship engaged with the lane and eventually got ready to make the jump to the Dublin system.

"Open ship wide comms..." Vaughn got a nod from his radio and intelligence officer "All hands, we are interring the Dublin system, man your action stations." His attention turned back to the bridge crew. "Begin recording all radio traffic for data collection and analysis." Their new duties, now required them to passively monitor and record all contacts while in front line action sectors and glean them for information. They exited the Dublin Jump gate and began picking up new ship signals.

"Picking up new contacts.....Nothing hostile captian."
"Ok, put it on the speakers and open up the frequency they are on."

[30.03.2017 16:11:43] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Okay.. We're mpt getting anywhere here, we'll take him in his pod
[30.03.2017 16:11:52] Cornwallace: Will: No i havent, i purchesed my cargo perfectly legally in liberty from liberty navy.
[30.03.2017 16:11:57] Suika.Ibuki: Greets Navy pilot

"Sir, we have a Kishiro transport surrounded by the BPA and a few other contacts...."
"Looks like a simple contraband check." He tapped the on button of his personal microphone.

[30.03.2017 16:12:04] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: BPA...this LNS Valiant, heading to the Essex..
[30.03.2017 16:12:04] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Good evening, all
[30.03.2017 16:12:04] BPA)Con.John.Steiner: Is that so?
[30.03.2017 16:12:07] Sapphire.Raven: So, the Navy just sold it to you?
[30.03.2017 16:12:13] Cornwallace: Will: OK
[30.03.2017 16:12:17] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: I doubt that very much
[30.03.2017 16:12:19] 2017-03-30 16:12:27 SMT Cornwallace's docking rights have been restored.

"Lots of cross talk Captain, BPA as blocked the Kusari vessels automatic docking sequences, its going nowhere Sir, and....target ship callsign, "SapphireRaven", seems to be conducting the investigation from what I can gather at the moment."
"do we have any intel in the ships database on this vessel? What are her radio frequency designations?"
"Sir, and we have no prior intel on this vessel...reading it as a Z series Border World VHF transmitting Freelancer radio codes, reading a Black Market Cnos Engine core and improved armor plating Class8... and....ah, Sir we are reading scanner energy far above that that is standard for a VHF, Sir that is an interesting load out..."
" Yea, sure is." Vaughn cut the Leutantant and followed protocol, not wanting to get distracted in the obvious. "Ok, make a new entry and tag it as Target#10-96 and start adding to its file in the data base. When we get to a secure terminal we will upload the intel to HQ." He wondered why such a small ship would be putting out so much sensor energy.

"Copy that Captain, adding target#10-96...updating ship side database..." The Lt. answered back as they continued to monitor the radio chatter.

[30.03.2017 16:12:20] Cornwallace: Will: Arrest him aswell.
[30.03.2017 16:12:23] 2017-03-30 16:12:31 SMT Cornwallace's docking rights have been removed by BPA)DC.Steve.Judge for minimum 120 seconds
[30.03.2017 16:12:30] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: So, what is the problem?
[30.03.2017 16:12:38] Suika.Ibuki: Captain of the LNS Transport did you sell him this containers?
[30.03.2017 16:12:41] Cornwallace: Will: He has the exact same cargo.
[30.03.2017 16:12:47] Sapphire.Raven: Except he's Navy.
[30.03.2017 16:12:49] Sapphire.Raven: You're not.
[30.03.2017 16:12:51] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: This vessel is carrying cargo it is not licensed to carry
[30.03.2017 16:12:53] Sapphire.Raven: You're a Kusarian worker.
[30.03.2017 16:12:55] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Sir
[30.03.2017 16:12:58] Sapphire.Raven: Do you not see the issue here?
[30.03.2017 16:13:06] Sapphire.Raven: For all they know, you could be a Gallic spy looking to sabotage.
[30.03.2017 16:13:09] Cornwallace: Will: So what?? Doesnt matter who delivers it..

"Sir, from the sound of it, she definitely seems involved in the contraband seizure, we are being hailed by the Bounty Hunter sir.."
"Yea, I heard, looks like a nice cluster frack around here" Something about the Z-series made his neck hairs crawl. "... and lets go ahead and set the passive scanning software to automatically activate recording mode anytime we come into range of target #10-86....Clear a channel with the Essex and get ready to set up a hard seal. If this goes like I think it will, BPA will need a hand transferring the interdicted cargo to the Essex." He tapped his local system comm button.

[30.03.2017 16:13:10] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Negative on that question.
[30.03.2017 16:13:18] BPA)Con.John.Steiner: It absolutly does
[30.03.2017 16:13:19] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Ah! a Civilian with Military Hardware

The they pulled along side and set up a hard seal with the Essex. Vaughn kept an ear on the radio chatter while the Role On Role Off cargo pods where swapped over to the Battleship. When they finished and returned to space, the BPA was still dealing with the Kusarian.

[30.03.2017 16:14:23] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: The BAF are handling the situation in Leeds. We are at war and as such this equipment you are carrying is only to be done so..
[30.03.2017 16:14:24] Suika.Ibuki: And my home is a puppet of those baguettes how about helping not sabotating the army then
[30.03.2017 16:14:25] Cornwallace: Will: I dont care! I am helping win this blasted war, and you are trying to extort money from me!
[30.03.2017 16:14:28] 2017-03-30 16:14:36 SMT Cornwallace's docking rights have been restored.
[30.03.2017 16:14:29] Macedonian: if i may advice you, mr kishiro amployee, comply at once
[30.03.2017 16:14:33] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: .. by licensed firms and Military
[30.03.2017 16:14:34] 2017-03-30 16:14:42 SMT Cornwallace's docking rights have been removed by BPA)Con.John.Steiner for minimum 120 seconds
[30.03.2017 16:14:36] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Now, Sir, you are hauling illegal Goods, for a Civilain, and therfore you must drop it.
[30.03.2017 16:14:52] Cornwallace: Will: Bugg off bunter, you have no business here!
[30.03.2017 16:15:03] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Also, Sir, your Papers suggest that you work for the Kusarians
[30.03.2017 16:15:05] Suika.Ibuki: I detect something inobund

"Sir reading a new contact, Gallic Bomber.....flying solo.....in a holding pattern 8k out."
"Well, I was going to try to avoid being around here for very long, but it looks like that is now out of the question." The new contact changed things up, Vaughn knew that the BPA would certainly need some help, it being better to offer than to have to be asked to, he tapped his microphone.

[30.03.2017 16:15:06] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: BPA, I can assist with a cargo transfer to the Essex if needed.
[30.03.2017 16:15:07] Jean.Mourbeu: Oh, a tea party.
[30.03.2017 16:15:12] Macedonian: you dont know that, i have my contracts
[30.03.2017 16:15:20] Jean.Mourbeu: Bonjour.
[30.03.2017 16:15:20] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Thankyou LNS vessel
[30.03.2017 16:15:22] Suika.Ibuki: Ah gallic scum it seems
[30.03.2017 16:15:39] Jean.Mourbeu: Ah yes.
[30.03.2017 16:15:41] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Cornwallace. This is your last call to drop the cargo
[30.03.2017 16:15:41] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Now, Sir, please comply and drop the cargo
[30.03.2017 16:15:51] Macedonian: theres bounty on those gallics too?
[30.03.2017 16:15:55] Cornwallace: Will: I shall do no souch thing!
[30.03.2017 16:15:55] BPA)Con.John.Steiner: Come on lad, drop it and go home
[30.03.2017 16:15:57] Jean.Mourbeu: Big enormous scum.
[30.03.2017 16:15:58] Suika.Ibuki: They are busy I can spend time with you
[30.03.2017 16:16:02] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Refuse and suffer the consequences
[30.03.2017 16:16:14] Sapphire.Raven: Oh, sorry.
[30.03.2017 16:16:18] Cornwallace: Will: The queen will hear about this!
[30.03.2017 16:16:28] BPA)Con.John.Steiner: I'm sure.
[30.03.2017 16:16:30] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Sir, this can only end badly, for you, if you do not comply

"Sir, Gallic contact moving closer, could be setting up for a bombing run."
"Understood, this is taking to long to resolve." Vaughn was slightly tense. d There should be enough fire power around to take out a solo Bomber if it chose to be foolish enough to launch an attack, but more than likely it was out on a recon mission. Either way, with each passing minute they were a bigger and fatter sitting duck for any Gallic patrol that could come to the lone bombers assistance. He tapped his mic button, wanting to comfirm the orders had not changed and to get a sense that they had the new threat on their scanners.

[30.03.2017 16:16:31] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: BPA, should I hold here or move on Copy?
[30.03.2017 16:16:37] 2017-03-30 16:16:45 SMT Cornwallace's docking rights have been restored.
[30.03.2017 16:16:38] Suika.Ibuki: How about leaving bretonia Sir
[30.03.2017 16:16:41] 2017-03-30 16:16:49 SMT Cornwallace's docking rights have been removed by BPA)Con.John.Steiner for minimum 120 seconds
[30.03.2017 16:16:44] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Hold please LNS vessel
[30.03.2017 16:16:53] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Times running out Mr Brown
[30.03.2017 16:16:56] Suika.Ibuki: Or else...
[30.03.2017 16:17:04] Jean.Mourbeu: How about stop telling what to do?
[30.03.2017 16:17:09] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Well, LN, the cargo will be leaving his Ship, one way or the other
[30.03.2017 16:17:12] Cornwallace: Will: Oh i have all time of sirius on my hands..
[30.03.2017 16:17:20] Suika.Ibuki: you may be one of the next crumpet fillings

[30.03.2017 16:17:29] Suika.Ibuki: if Im done with you
[30.03.2017 16:17:38] Cornwallace: Will: What is this rice eater saying?
[30.03.2017 16:17:39] Jean.Mourbeu: Kinky~.
[30.03.2017 16:17:40] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Right, im done being diplomatic.. Charging weapons

"Sir, BPA vessels are charging weapons...Gallic bomber looking like it might go for the hit and run ..."
"All Hands, man battle stations, get ready to receive possible casualties, get the cargo tractor beams ready to lock on and draw the cargo into the rear cargo bay." While it was going to be a shame to watch the Kusari vessel go down in flames, Vaughn knew its cargo was still very valuable to the war effort. "Keep your guns pre-locked on the Gallic bomber, if he makes a run at us, open up on him." He opened up the local system channel once more.

[30.03.2017 16:17:43] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Copy that...its valuable cargo for the war effort..would hate to see it go to waste.
[30.03.2017 16:17:44] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Please, Sir, last chance, drop the illegal cargo
[30.03.2017 16:17:55] Suika.Ibuki: Warming weapons
[30.03.2017 16:18:04] Cornwallace: Will: Go ahead blow my ship up, as if i care:
[30.03.2017 16:18:10] Jean.Mourbeu: Warm this.
[30.03.2017 16:18:11] Sapphire.Raven: Well, the possibility of death...
[30.03.2017 16:18:13] Suika.Ibuki: how about to end it quick
[30.03.2017 16:18:15] Sapphire.Raven: Hm.

"Sir, Bomber adopting a hostile vector and approach..."
"Yea, I see it, this wont take long, get ready for evasive maneuvers." He watched the exterior forward monitor, the BPA taking out the Kusari transport expeditiously. He wondered if in the chaos of taking the transport down, had the BPA become aware of the bomber threat.

[30.03.2017 16:18:15] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Incoming Bomber BPA

"Sir, we read the Gallic bomber as being intercepted and is pealing off, low probability that he will target us.....energy readings from the kusari transport indicate that its main engine core is about to fail and explode...."
"Alright undestood. All hands brace for secondary impact from debri...Moves us 1600 meters up and away left of target from present possition. Get us into a good gravitational position to cargo recapture."

[30.03.2017 16:18:24] Death: Cornwallace was put out of action by BPA)DC.Steve.Judge (Gun).
[30.03.2017 16:18:33] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: All your LN
[30.03.2017 16:18:35] Suika.Ibuki: Shall we?
[30.03.2017 16:18:48] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: copy that
[30.03.2017 16:18:52] Jean.Mourbeu: Do your worst.
[30.03.2017 16:19:00] Suika.Ibuki: well then

While they pulled in the vented cargo, the crew and contingent of marines had put aside any petty differences. Vaughn could see all of them "Suited and Booted" in the now depressurized cargo hold of the Bison. All of them catching and stacking cargo pods, as they are pulled in and onto the tractor pad. Watching them work as a complete crew towards one goal, was the first positive thing he had seen all week.

"(Static)...Captain, all non damaged cargo is aboard, setting cargo door seal and pressurizing...(Static)."
"Understood cargo bay....Make way for the Essex again." He tapped his mic, and turned his attention to getting along side the Essex.

[30.03.2017 16:19:04] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Proceeding to the Essex for off load.

Shortly, they would link up with the Essex again, and the process of transferring the cargo start all over again. He listened to system channel radio chatter and kept an eye on the scanners.

[30.03.2017 16:19:06] BPA)Waldorf.Salad: Why will these smugglers never learn?
[30.03.2017 16:19:13] BPA)Con.John.Steiner: Greed sir
[30.03.2017 16:19:17] 2017-03-30 16:19:24 SMT Traffic control alert: LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012 has requested to dock
[30.03.2017 16:19:21] Sapphire.Raven: Steiner, think we can have a minor chat?
[30.03.2017 16:19:42] Sapphire.Raven: Let's move positions though.

He digitally signed for the credits certificates, from the extra half load delivered, and made a credit transfer to what he thought was the lead BPA officer. It would just be an excess on this ships accounting logs and one more thing to have to explain in case of an audit. Vaughn opened up a private channel to the Officer.

[30.03.2017 16:20:20] /givecash bpa)dc.steve.judge 20000000
[30.03.2017 16:20:20] You have sent 20.000.000 credits to BPA)DC.Steve.Judge
[30.03.2017 16:20:38] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Returning to NL
[30.03.2017 16:20:47] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: BPA spread that among your officers sir
[30.03.2017 16:20:50] BPA)DC.Steve.Judge: Thankyou LNS vessel

"Give me a ship and crew status" Vaughn was already centered on something churning in his brain.
"Sir, the ship reports minor impacts from debris from the Kusari transport, while we were hauling in the cargo....no damage, all sensors and antennas operational....No injuries to the crew or members of platoon*7-232nd*....all sensor readings and transcripts are being analized for any viable information." Elliot Pickens, looked over his check list, he was the only new member of the bridge crew. A Navy intelligence officer, implanted within the 7thPlatoon. He had hoped he had made a good impression on the captain, it would make his job easier in gathering intel and passing it up the chain of command. "and, ah....Sir, I think that is all."

"Good job Lt. Pickens, I am sure you know what needs to be done, so carry on....I would like to see snap shot analysis of any viable info before you pass it up the food chain." Vaughn opened up the channel to the whole crew. "Standing down from action stations, well done, make arrangements for skeleton crew shifts and everyone that can get as much rest as you can." Vaughn got up from his chair, "Its your ship Lt. Pickens, wake me in 6 hours or if we run into any trouble." and walked the 9 steps to the Captains berth and disappeared behind the sliding door.

Over the course of the next few runs Lt. Pickens looked over the available data. He would have to fine tune the sensors, as some of the data gathered was of unusable quality. It would take him a few months to work out the bugs, but for now they would have to make do with a gimpy data recovery unit. But each time they passed through the New London lane exchange, they were able to gather more information on target #10-96. While it was just scraps of open channel radio communication and some passive scans, it painted a picture he was not at all happy with. He was putting the finishing touches on the intel report they would file when they docked on Westpoint, when Captain Vaughn walked back in. He had been so absorbed with the task at hand, he had not noticed the time pass by.

He was putting the finishing details on the intel report, when Captain Vaughn walked back in. He had been so absorbed with the task at hand, he had not noticed the time pass by.

"What do ya got for me?" Vaughn not bothering with pleasantries and was back to business.

"This Intel report to send out sir" Lt.Pickens passed over the datapad for the captain to look over. Vaughn took it from his hands and the Lt. kept talking. " We have just pulled into West Point, No incidents to report, majority of the crew is still resting sir, all ship dials are in the green, we are having small problems fine tuning the Intel sensor gear, but that is an issue that takes actual time to get dialed in.... and I was just about to wake you as instructed sir."

Vaughn sat in his chair and as he read the report, someone from the crew brought him Coffee. "You think there is a link?" He asked the Lt.

"Dunno sir, the data needs more evaluation back at command, but anywhere we spot a Legion ship it should be reported sir."

"Alright then, get a secure link and send it and then get some shut eye." Vaughn handed the pad back and took a sip of coffee.

"Copy that sir." Lt.Pickens cleaned up a few keystrokes and sent the report out. Happy his shift was over.

RE: In Extremis - oZoneRanger - 04-24-2017

Captain Ray Vaughn was in his chair on the bridge of the Valiant, looking over the particulars of his latest assignment. They had been tasked with finding a safe route to the Rosillon system and making contact with Council representatives to arrange for regular shipments of Nano-capacitors in exchange for Hydrogen Cyanide to be used in the production of ship components in the Virginia system.

With the Gauls taking control of the Magellan system, the route to procure the Hydrogen Cyanide took them through Cortez and into Coronado. Instructions had been given to negotiate safe passage through the necessary systems if needed. They had not encountered anyone from the Crayter Republic as yet, but he had just finished logging the transcripts of a contact with the TAZ, where passage through the Baffin system was secured.

The Valiant had just finished transiting the Tau 29 system and had made the jump to the Rossillon system. The hope was to make contact with the Council and make the necessary arrangements for a more permanent trade route to be established.

"Sir, long range scans indicate engine core radiation consistent with a Council transport vessels heading towards our location. We are currently on approach to planet Toulouse and should be entering the planets Orbit shortly."

"Good, get full passive scans on the ship once it gets into range and open a channel"

"Copy that Sir, channel is now open"

[22.04.2017 12:45:36] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Council vessel, this is the LNS Valiant, dry cargo transport on a trade mission from Liberty. We are hauling nanocapicitors
[22.04.2017 12:46:19] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: and wish to exchange them for Hydrogen Cyanide for our ship building facilities in the Virginia system. We are requesting
[22.04.2017 12:46:24] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: permission to dock.

"Sir, the ship is now in range of our passive scanner, it is a BT485-LAne Brigand transport, with Council radio identification frequencies...registered as CLT-Geghard , Charon transport turrets, Cheetah class thruster with a CNOS-19 engine core, Graviton shields.....ah....reading extra armor plating class 5. He may not have heard us Sir, adjusting frequencies on the open channel sir...go ahead and try again Captain."

[22.04.2017 12:50:18] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: **Repeating Transmission** Council vessel Geghard, this is LNS Valiant, we are a dry cargo transport hauling nano-capicitors
[22.04.2017 12:53:15] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: We would like to exchange them for Hydrogen Cyanide for our ship building facilities in the Virginia system. Requesting permission
[22.04.2017 12:53:19] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: to dock. Copy?
[22.04.2017 12:54:20] [C]-CLT-Geghard: Miroslav: This is Council transport unit, C-L-T Geghard, I-D Two-two-eight. Wait until I contact with High Command, monsieur...
[22.04.2017 12:54:51] LNS-[AKE]-Valiant-012: Understood. We will anchor to the Mooring fixture and wait your contact.
[22.04.2017 12:55:33] [C]-CLT-Geghard: Roger that.

"Helm, lock us onto the orbital mooring fixture and lets wait for a response." Years of long haul cargo transport had taught Captain Ray Vaughn a few lessons, one of them being that it was always good to knock before opening a door, and if they asked you to wipe your feet you did. "We may be here a bit, but keep the crew at action stations just in case."

"Copy that Sir."
