They would be fun for targets , since they are so big , so maybe they can be back as some sort of RARE NPC encounter full of some juicy loot ?
For example , human player encounter one and it see it has 40.000 of "something", which is good for group of pirates with transport ships support . He stick around Barge to keep it in game , and calls in raiding party , then they pillage it . To prevent it to shoot players more that other NPC do , it can be either set as Freelancer/Zoner and neutral to all , or to have same House in which it is spawned law rep .
Naturally , for this to have challenge , the more expensive cargo it has , harder is to kill it .
If it has 40.000 Liberty Ale or something it will be basic Barge , if it has Gold and such , it will be buffed Barge ( x2 hull and weapons ) , if it has ore , it will be double buffed Barge ( x4 ) .
Well , it will be like that giant Nomad occasional event , only without need for admins to set it all the time , and without its support ships .

Bring it back as an NPC or a very rare assassinate mission against extremely difficult odds, raid boss style. Local weapons platforms with cruiser or battleship guns, NPC mission station with similar loadouts. Swarms of fighters with full power guns, maybe the odd bomber.
Fill it with a sizeable mound of commodities related to the faction it's owned by, maybe squeeze in some creditcards, maybe CODENAMEs if you're feeling frisky.
Profit.

I remember the barge well.
on the few occasions I saw one it always appeared to break the game. Freelancer just can't handle such large ships gracefully.
While it was a bit of fun and always a laugh, it was clumsy and ruined my immersion the second I saw an object the size of a large planet bouncing around uncontrolably.
That's just my opinion, I don't feel too strongly either way though.

+1 Please bring back as I feel they had a legitimate use and I found them to be a fun and interesting challenge to fly.

Erm....Why not buying planets? Same thing as a Barge. Honestly. I dont feel like strugling one hour to move 40k of copper in Liberty or for long trips. Rather add it as an escort event or something. Or make it avalable to official factions only. But pls dont make it public. Too many players with billions and I dont want to see flying planetoids near me. It would just lag the game so hard till the server would literally die.
