Freelancer Related Games & Large Mod Projects List - Blake00 - 08-04-2017
Hey guys!
I'm looking to engage the various Freelancer communities to help me build an ever improving list of Freelancer related games out there.
Long story short, in 2014 I created a Freelancer section on my oldschool retro website paying tribute to the original Freelancer games along with the great many successful & sadly unsuccessful Freelancer related fan projects out there to make sure that they are never forgotten and can inspire talented Freelancer fans to create new Freelancer projects in the future. For that list I collected pics, vids, demos, and information for as many of the projects as possible. I could use some help from the community with this list as I'm sure there's more I don't know about. This is my latest summary of the website list below.

Very, very similar game for Android.
In fact, aside from controls and battles adapted for phone , lots of gameplay improvment and new things and diferent story, you culd say it is dirty Freelancer copycat.

No one mentions the X series ? Damn. X3 and its add-on, DLC's and the other story content is pretty damn good. X3 Rebirth and Albion Prelude are awesome games and with awesome mods too.

Many of those games aren't nearly related to Freelancer but just are in space. Like, Eve has literally nothing in common with Freelancer. If you like Sci-fi survival, you could try Empyrion. If you like building, exploring and fighting, Avorion. If you like a round-based, 2D version of Freelancer with many other possibilities, try out Space Rangers 2: Dominators. If you like the same in real time and more Diablo 2-like, try out Drox Operative. If you like dystopian settings and Eve, try out the Star Wolves-series. If you like 3D space shooters, definitely give BANG! Gunship Elite a try.
If you like Freespace and Babylon 5, try out The Babylon Project, which is a total conversion of Freespace with Babylon 5 content. If you like getting trolled, get No Man's Sky.

Escape Velocity type games that lack multiplayer but are in many respects similar to 2D Freelancer:
Escape Velocity Nova (Costs something like $20 though but you can get the other games as free plugins)
Escape Velocity Classic (The original from 1996, can be played as a total conversion plugin for Nova)
Escape Velocity Override (Second EV game, can be played as a total conversion plugin for Nova)
Naev (EV clone, mostly unfinished. Free.)
Endless Sky (EV clone. Free. Actively developed. Pretty much feature complete.)
You can explore freely, choose to align with factions, fly trade ships and combat ships from fighter to capital. They usually have multiple faction-centric and minor campaigns that unlock new ships and tech. Most of them also let you do things like board ships and have escort fleets.
Edit: There are also two Naev offshoots including one with a procedurally generated map.

Actually that's not the case. To qualify as a related/similar to Freelancer's game style I used a criteria of:
- Open non-linear galaxy
- Explore/Fight/Trade/Pirate style gameplay
- Land on space stations and/or planets (the later being rare sadly)
I then sorted the list into Very Similar, Similar & Sort of Similar based on how close I felt each game was to the Freelancer experience. Some of the games I haven't played yet so there may be some shuffling or changes as the years go by lol!
Eve (despite being an MMO) meets those 3 criteria does it not? If I was just putting any old space game in there then Chris Robert's Wing Commander series would be in there. However since those are linear mission based fighting only games they don't make it in. The Wing Commander Privateer series however does meet the 3 criteria so they make the list.

Small note about the Rebirth Mod:
I read just now that the mod creators had to drop the mod from ModDB because they used stuff from other mods without crediting.
