New mining system proposition. - Vexykin - 02-22-2018

So, an idea flashed through my head, on how to raise more diverse activities, which would give us more unique ways to acquire different type of cargo and making money in general. Along with raising more Roleplaying opportunities for trading factions, but surely not limited to other kind of factions.

So here i'm introducing: "The Smelter" project.

The concept which flashed me, is fairly basic, but very easy to implement, because the code is already pretty much there.


So here it is...
People could mine their ore and sell them for good prices still, but as it's an unrefined resource, it can be put into smelter, which in time, can greatly increase the value, by refining the ore/commodity/relic/whatever. There would be either a Smelter module, or a different dedicated type of new Pob which can be built for Smelting Ore.
Of course i'd go with the "Dedicated Smelter Pob" concept, because it would need separate commodities, such as "Future Coal" for furnace Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin , or whatever quantum oven would they use in Freelancer universe and it's current timeline.
But the sale prices for the ore would be enourmous for example, not too much not to destroy economy, but high enough to make it slightly more profitable than the current mining system, because of the effort needed to produce such a thing.
Of course many pirate factions would have more time to hunt down the juiciest loot ingame and such, thus benefiting in overall activity of the server.

Also many trading factions could benefit from the smelted ore refining and such, so people can inRP make orders for certain materials for example, which in turn could be implemented into yet another chain of things, where the smelted/refined material is needed to build other shiny things, to make ordering such valuable cargo useful, also to hire protection for very high-valuable/high-effort cargo convoy.


This concept is not limited to other uses of ticking commodity type of pob FLHook script usage...

So, thoughts?

ive thought of a similar idea like this before

as in get an ore from one system, needs another type of commodity from another, put/smelt/make them together in a POB to maker another and then ship it

would require good effort from a few pilots/factions to make it work

it would work if organised

The issue is that the " effort needed to produce such a thing. " would be done by a PoB and not a player or group of players, so it doesn't really contribute to player activity other than the one-off requirement to build the PoB

This is nice.

I imagine this would use the same mechanics as the current factory modules (bring goods, base eats goods, produces new good).

True but if in game, players are aware that this kind of idea is available/put in game, then surely people would group/work together to make it happen, and then perhaps "hostile" groups would also work together to "get them" therefore making/improving activity

This requires FLHook and was planned for Neo Terra back in the day and @Alley was working specifically on this. It was never finished however which means its unlikely to ever get done now.

From my point of view, it would be fairly easy to implement, but very hard to balance the economy accordingly, so if the balance team is up for a challenge, then why not use existing PoB code to slightly edit it in a way to spawn another type of Pob...Aka "The Smelter"

I don't think you understand; you can't simply copy some .cfg file text in notepad. Each module and each recipe is hardcoded into FLHook. You can change the ingredients through config files, but to actually add a new item you need to edit the code and then recompile it, which I think maybe two people still playing know how to do.

Oh well, i understand that, i'm into coding myself, thus somewhat familiar with it and i understand the work/effort which is needed to implement this.
And by "Easy" i didn't mean for this to be an easy copy-paste type of work, but rather the fact, that main working parts in the code is there, and it's up for an experienced coder (Read: Not me) to figure out...
However, if nobody couldn't do it in this community, it makes me sad to see such an useful feature thrown away Sad

I'd do it myself, but i simply lack skills and time.
