Where would Discovery 2 start? - Corile - 03-01-2018 Hypothetically, if Freelancer 2 had come about and Discovery were to be remade on a brand new engine, where do you think the story should (re)start? RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - sindroms - 03-01-2018 A hypergate to Sol. Given that the full intro is non-cannon, the place is now owned by Colaition. Doot doot. RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - t0l - 03-01-2018 tal ravis was cryogenically frozen and reawakens to go to sol in order to perform ethnic cleansing with dmr RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - HanCloudstone - 03-01-2018 Fraag, the perspective to create an all-new Discovery universe. On the other hand, full wipe might be horrifying. I will go for the conservative option, then. RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - Corile - 03-01-2018 Reminder this is not flood. RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - Antonio - 03-01-2018 I'm strongly for the first option - directly after vanilla - (can be a few years gap to prepare our own plot until Discovery 2 actually starts, say 805) timeline because of a few reasons, 1 that stands out. 1. It's by far the most appealing to players. The ability to go back in time and relive the older moments (ex. 4.85) through the new engine is something majority of players would welcome a lot. I can only imagine how many of them'd like to enjoy the old house wars (Liberty-Rheinland, Kusari-Bretonia) that don't necessarily have to happen exactly that way, but the opportunity is there. It's also attractive to people who quit playing Discovery a long ago or didn't play Discovery at all (if Discovery 2 gets enough attention, maybe even people who didn't play Freelancer), so the plot starting right after vanilla is known by everyone. It creates a very user friendly and nostalgic atmosphere which I think is what should be aimed for. 2. The freedom of story telling and fixing mistakes. Not only do we go back with a clean slate to start the story from, but also correct some of the mistakes that happened through the years. Most notably it's obviously Gallia, but there're also minor mistakes that could be fixed. This is a subjective matter so there's no point in going in detail about it here, but the opportunity to fix and create anew is undoubtedly present. 3. Everyone starts over cleanly in every segment. This is a double-edged sword which on the first glance might be the only reason that this timeline seems bad. Losing all of Discovery's history? All of the characters are reverted, any kind of roleplay done by people? I'm gonna straight up say that with all that considered, it's well worth it. Why? First, we have the old vets and all new players that'd be coming to Discovery 2. The former may have some attachment to Discovery's lore, but it's in memories of the past, the past that they could be reliving now with Discovery 2. Their characters are long forgotten and if they were to come back on Disco now, they'd most likely make new ones or make heavy modifications to the current ones. Again, it's the power of going back in time which is very appealing. New players have no stories or finished roleplay but the ability to know the plot after vanilla would make it easier for them than having to read all of Discovery's history and then try to fit in. As for Discovery players, it'd be split. People hate losing stuff so all of their progress going down the drain would hurt them. But perhaps all we need to do in that regard is show them the opportunity that Discovery 2 offers. Change their mentality on the topic to look on the bright side - where everyone starts clean and they too get to fix the mistakes of their character/faction, appeal to a larger audience, redo the RP they've done but with more detail and in a way they wanted to, but can't anymore. Besides, they can always c/p the content from the Discovery forums into Discovery 2, their roleplay isn't fully going away. The story of a character or a faction can be adjusted through multiple timelines, with minor modifications to the obvious stuff. 4. The ease of fixing other mistakes not related to the lore. Things such as system connections, too many crowded systems, no good choke points, no clear activity hubs, better mining field organization, better route organization and other miscellaneous stuff are all easier to fix when you go back to having less stuff in general. Less systems, less bases, less factions means less work to fix everything. Make no mistake, there is no perfect solution. This one is what I think has the least amount of flaws and the highest appeal to players. RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - SnakThree - 03-01-2018 Full retcon in a roleplay-centric community would not sit well. RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - Antonio - 03-01-2018 (03-01-2018, 04:37 PM)SnakThree Wrote: Full retcon in a roleplay-centric community would not sit well. But look at the bigger picture - if it was a new game, what'd be the percentage of currently active players compared to the total amount of everyone joining to play it (new and old returning players)? If the game gets a decent amount of new players (by new I mean everyone not currently active, vets included), they'd all have a much easier time fitting in after vanilla for the reasons I explained in the post above. Only current active people are the ones that could in general want the retcon to not happen, and only a portion of it as the poll shows, 1/3 at the moment (only active people vote in the poll to begin with). So overall it's not nearly as bad as it might seem. RE: Where would Discovery 2 start? - HanCloudstone - 03-01-2018 RiP Coalition, OSI, Crayter, Gallia, Hellfire, Oracles, K'Hara, Vagrants, Harmony, Core and pretty much everything and everyone. Yikes, that's some potent bone hurting juice! I'd only miss Gallia. Groups like Oracles and OSI can exist, I see why not. Coalition too, just roll back their development a bit. |
