How long can you not play until character deletion? - Irishacana - 04-09-2018

Hey everyone, I haven’t played in over a month due to business trips abroad. I returned home and luckily all my main characters were still there! I noticed a new character I had created had been deleted though, I was wondering what is the period of time before characters are deleted? I play this game more often during the winter (I live in Canada) and so I was thinking of setting reminders to login during the summer so I don’t forget.

No worries about the new character being deleted, I honestly hadn’t done much on it so there is no need for me to recover it or anything like that.

Question 1: what is the period of time that can pass before a character is deleted for inactivity?

Question 2: when you login is there a “ minimum amount of time” to stay logged in for the server to count your presence and reset the inactivity timer?

Thanks everyone,

I invite any community member to correct me if I'm wrong here, but: The Activity wipe-system removes ships that are not logged after a period of 6 months.

and as far as I'm aware, for the system to consider a ship "active" enough to reset the counter, the ship needs to undock from whatever station it's on. I usually fire off a few CMs just so Autobuy kicks in just because I'm paranoid like that.

The ship does not need to be undocked, only logged into. Other than that, @Sciamach is correct about the six month time period.

Your character will also be deleted if you haven't reached 10-20 minutes of activity after creating it. This will happen after a week from its creation.

DSAM needs to register changes on the character to bump it. Simply logging the character will not do it. You need to make some sort of change on your character's file. Buy or sell a commodity, undock or transfer cash. When in doubt, do it properly. Bumping a character takes seconds, replacing a character- a bit more than that.

Is that a new development? Because I don't remember that being the case back in the day.

This is my observation after having to process character deletions.
The setting that is responsible for old character deletion is linked to DSAM. DSAM detects if a character is ''bumped'' by scanning the existing multiplayer folders for changes. You must apply changes to your character's individual file. You can bump it simply by unmounting a gun, undocking and then docking again, so that your ''base_equipment ='' line is changed, for example.

Though if a rollback happens, your character will not be bumped.

I concur with Sindroms, at least from the physical game's end-user behaviour. I've tried both systems before - a state change is the best way to ensure your characters don't go AWOD.

Does typing the /time command work? Otherwise, I'm A-OK with simply buying and selling a commodity, especially since my old method was to undock, wait two minutes, then re-dock, which can take a bit of time when you have about 20+ characters to refresh.

Undocking, firing off a CM and re-docking should do it. Buying a commodity will do the same but involves more clicks (I think..)

If you have autobuy enabled (which you should), the CM usage will ensure something ends up being "bought" by the ship. That combined with the undocking should be more than enough to ensure they're fine.
