The Wiki - tazuras - 02-02-2009 Personally I look at the wiki and I see a lot of wasted potential. I have seen a lot of Sirus history and information (including finally versions of treaties, system and base info and even rosters) written by the community that would be much easier to find and access on the Wiki than it is on the forums. I know using the wiki more would require greater moderation of it but I think it would lessen the moderation requirement of the forum. The other downside is that authoring on the wiki is a lot harder and takes more time. Personally I'd be a lot more willing to work on it if I saw other people were making large contributions to it. I think one thing that would help (that might already be there I just dont know where to look) is a series of templates for every type of entry (faction, planet, system, ship, etc...) so most of the HTML work was already done for the people contributing. That's all I got for now, what does everyone else think? The Wiki - Benjamin - 02-02-2009 As a new player, I love the wiki. But yes, it doesn't have enough stuff on it. I spend probably as much time searching this forum as I do playing discovery. Searching is horrible; you wade through pages of hits, then pages of threads, in the end you can just about piece together what you wanted to find out using 10 different posts, most of which are just opinions or out of date or whatever. The forums are good, but they're way too byzantine for a new player to come to and try and learn anything. There's like 30 subforums, most of those have their own subforums, and every subforum has like 20 pinned topics. It's fine once you've got tabs on it, but the wiki is a much more logical way to store this stuff. The Wiki - tazuras - 02-02-2009 I agree and props on using the word byzantine. The Wiki - tazuras - 02-02-2009 I'm gonna bump this cause I think it is important and I think moving info to the wiki where it is more accessible could greatly improve the quality of RP here. It could help prevent, "oh, I never heard of that agreement" or "they invaded what when?" or even answer such simple questions as is there turkey in Sirus? I think there is cause the original ships must have been arcs to guarantee the sustainability of human life here, but since it's not written down anywhere (at least not that I can find) I could be wrong. The Wiki - tazuras - 02-03-2009 Alright, I'm gonna keep bumping this until a moderator or Admin tells me not to or I get some decent input. I'm a communications major, humor me. The Wiki - Primus Avatar - 02-03-2009 im not a moderator but i can welcome you to help us improve the wiki, sign up, take part in wiki discussions and fill in the missing areas. This will be exceptionally important once 4.85 comes out since many ship specifics will have to be re-written. Cheers. The Wiki - Grumblesaur - 02-03-2009 It needs more on systems and bases. A LOT more. Unless you want everyone to have Companion. :/ The Wiki - tazuras - 02-03-2009 I am signed up and I am gonna try to start helping but I want to try to get everyone else to think about it to and how great it could be, it could be the encyclopedia of Sirus, and most of the info already exists on the forums. The Wiki - tazuras - 02-03-2009 Quote:It needs more on systems and bases. A LOT more. I think it would be nice if the factions who operated in those systems contributed to those areas of the wiki. I mean who knows the systems better than they do? Additionally many of them have already created a great deal of back story that is here on the forums (if you can find it), like the Order (of which I am a member and plan on filling in the omicron minor and omicron 100 systems). The Wiki - looqas - 02-03-2009 Ok. I'll tell you how the thing got started since I've been on board doing wiki from almost from the start. Igiss put up a wiki page and gave pretty much free hands. Hyung Soon was the primus motor behind the wiki push before he left the disco for RL reasons. And he together with Blodo and others came up with the templates for different articles. The biggest honchos around the wiki now are Blodo (who has the admin rights there) and MarvinCZ and both are pretty busy doing the work for 4.85 as well. And lately Nathrael has been more active on the wiki too. There's a wiki skype discussion (PM blodo and he'll add you in) Right now wiki has been in some sort of a hold due to 4.85. The next mod release will bring so many changes that people could find themselves have done redundant work. So everybody is holding his/her breath. And there has been discussion all the time what should go into the wiki and what shouldn't. For example originally the exact ship selling locations were listed, but they were taken away. Why? Because revealing everything would leave nothing to discover. And discovering is one of the main things. Anyway you get the point why some things are omitted. Anything that is not subject to change quickly can be included in wiki. The forums provide an excellent place to discuss things out. The wiki is more like a letter sent to everybody. If you include too many of e.g. faction stuff there it takes someone to keep it upto date. Keeping things uptodate is a major task in itself. So think about that factor before adding stuff to wiki. That's why depicting systems and factions have been left vague and un-named. So don't go writing into Liberty article the names of your character and such. Only very established characters like the president can get a mention. So someone mentioned that Treaties and stuff like that could be added. It's an excellent idea. Go and do it. You have to remember that anybody can sign up into the wiki and alter almost any text he likes, so it's open to misinformation and abuse much more than forums. But I'm glad to hear and see new people coming to wiki roster. I wish everybody would chip in their own part. All who are joining up please take a look at http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?title=Style_Guide to get an idea. My suggestion is to start out doing something small. Adding the missing pieces. Good page to check out and update if you see something missing is http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?titl...be_edited_later Given that the 4.85 will bring a lot of changes in many, many pages I think the safest bet right now is to fill up the existing system. And people best suited to that are people who play that corner of space. That's how it has been filling slowly up. Blodo and I, among other long-time wiki members, have been pretty active in the Rheinland sector so you can see that Rheinland systems and stuff are pretty well fleshed out already whereas Corsairs, OC and Kusari are pretty unfinished as of now. So people, come and make the wiki more complete. |
