Esteemed members of the high command of the Legion,

It's been some time, hasn't it? I've been trying to figure out how I wanted to write this one for a while now, and in the process of manifesting a sort of definitive history of my people I stumbled upon some half-wiped archives from the unfortunate years between the era of Petrucci and the era of myself that made formally re-opening communications somewhat more important.

It appears at some point that an interim leader of the organization formerly and at the time known as the Vagrant Raiders did something quite astonishingly horrendous and professed his desire to wipe out the Hellfire Legion. Now, clearly, as he is long dead or otherwise unaccounted for and hasn't been heard from for close to half a decade, and our once-dear friends in the Legion are not, all is right in the universe, and as I've had some lovely chats with some of your people in the past month or so, I'm assuming we're not on shooting terms. But I'd like to just check in and make sure that's in fact the case.

Once upon a time, the Raiders were part of the line of defense for the Vespucci system, back when it was a closely guarded secret. Hell, we owe our entire history and existence as an organization to the Legion, which is apparently something someone in our blemished past forgot about. But despite the Vagrant Raiders as a name and a banner being dead and gone, and Natio Octavarium and her fleet raised in its place, we still remember.

I believe when my colleague and best friend said "you should reach out to the Legion", he was intending for something a little less... familial. But before I enter politician mode and start trying to strike up a treaty or whatever, I'd like to just be good ol' Taskmaster Kane of the Vagrant Raiders for one last time.

In short, are we still good?

Regards,
Taskmaster Harold Kane

We met recently, with the Covenant. Truthfully I have only fond memories of Petrucci and his men. I was also a... what? A Lieutenant? Major? I can't remember. Point being despite whatever was said or done, good or bad, it happened so far in the distant past that I can't reasonably treat you as anything more than an unknown at the moment. But there are worse things to be than a blank slate.

So in closing, I have a pair of questions -

What happened to the Metropolis, and what does Natio Octavarium want with us?

Libera te ex Infernis,
Samuel Locklear

Lord Commander,

I suppose a blank slate is better than what I was expecting. One can with much greater ease write glowing recommendations and tales of valour and other fluffy sentiments like that on a blank slate than to balance out an existing tablet of disappointment and frustration.

The Metropolis rests eternal now. The combined Gallic sieges and the critical damage sustained at the Zwickau Massacre broke her back, so to speak. After her final jump, the more sensitive components were packed up and put into various Octavarium ships for storage and transport, including the old Spyglass core. Usable parts of the hull and armour were salvaged as quickly as possible. The rest was incinerated since we aren't big fans of having Spyglass-type dreadnoughts just flying around being repressurized by random organizations. She died doing what she did for years: protecting her people.

We don't spend much time in Commonwealth space, but we may pass through and the Octavarium Mercantile Guild's independent traders may be interested in doing business with Commonwealth stations and organizations. To that end, the Natio is just interested in being on good terms with the Commonwealth and the Legion. I remember at some point in the past one of the interim leaders of the Raiders between Petrucci and myself had done something that he never actually told me the details of that ended up with the Legion taking shots at Raiders assets, and even though he's disappeared and gone -- hopefully forever -- I just wanted to make sure we weren't still on the list of people to point the business end of something marked "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY" at.

Plus, it's been damn near a decade since I've seen the Vespucci system. I kind of miss it.

To the old days.

Taskmaster Harold Kane
