Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Unseelie - 06-15-2018 So, it seems as though the restart for borderworld outcasts comes pre-loaded with all of the corsair bases... I think this is an oversight, if its not, can someone explain to me why as an outcast player, I need to have all the corsair bases show up in my trade routes? If not, I'd be happy to spend some time editing the file that contains the all of that information to remove the corsair stuff, and presumably, the outcast stuff from the corsair player maps. (that might be harder to explain to me than its worth to anyone, but I've dug through the freelancer files before, so I think I can do this) RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Kalhmera - 06-15-2018 I wouldn't go tampering with FL Files, good way to get you banned. Edit: unless your confident then you should be fine... ![]() RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Unseelie - 06-15-2018 What you do, is you set up a mirror install in a second folder, and then you dig them out, put them in a notepad file, or some other text editor, and change them there. Then you give them to a dev to put back into the official game for next patch update. (which is going around the merges for the next patch, and doesn't work for a variety of file compatibility reasons, which is why I'm doing a bit of asking before doing) RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Spectre - 06-15-2018 The restarts from my understanding are for the most part the same all around, except the 'bw specific' or 'gallic' ones or others of that nature. Most of them have most of the bases mapped for trading purposes, including ones that generally would be illegal for you to dock on as your respective faction (OCs knowing Corsair bases, IC with Gallic Lawful bases, etc.) It's a time saving measure so that the folks who make the restarts don't have to go around creating each and every faction's preferred restart. Close enough is better than not at all, ya know? Also, as far as I'm aware, it's not a client-side thing. Restarts are purely server-side. RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - DarkTails - 06-15-2018 We do not advise editing your files unless with staff approved modifications. Many things are handled server side and must be changed on server files for changes like this to happen. Editing files may result in our Anti-Cheat system kicking you from the server. Edit at your own risk. RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Kazinsal - 06-15-2018 Editing the restart files won't get you kicked from the server since the client doesn't parse them. They're solely used by the restart module of the player control plugin for FLHook. No idea if it's an oversight or not, though. Those restarts have been there for years. RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Sciamach - 06-15-2018 Speaking of: The Outcast restart (and probably countless others, this is just the one I know most about and use probably more than anyone) is woefully out of date and in need of tuning- half the solars in the Outcast's home system aren't even registered and the surrounding systems are similarly blank. I know these are a monstrous pain to work with for the staff but can we get someone looking at fixing some of the worst offenders here? Please? RE: Outcasts /restart can see inside corsair bases - Karlotta - 06-15-2018 There are a few more problems with the restarts, like the fact that they show some stations as visited, and therefore as available trade routes, when the corresponding ID keeps the player from docking at the station. For example the Gateway shows Scarborough as visited together with all the prices, but when someone tries to sell stuff there they can't dock because it's a Bowex base. I also agree that "most convenient" restart does not mean "best impact" restart. If you show too much, you take the exploration aspect out of the game (good for vets but boring for noobs), and you also somewhat make people visit/trade to more places (spreads players out and reduces interactions). It would also be good if useless and confusing tags like "Hs" "Corp" and "fc" were removed from the names of the restarts, because they make them more difficult to find (orders intuitive names non-alphabetically) and difficult to overview (makes everything longer and therefore longer to read). This means when assets get reused or recycled, the information in the restart file will now point to a new base / system / zone. It's not a problem that will ever have a long term fix unless some restart auto-generation tool is created. If you do not like it, feel free to use the "hardcore" restart that doesn't give you a map. Just because you do not like something, doesn't mean other people shouldn't have it. Someone who doesn't already know what fc and hs are suposed to mean will just get confused when trying to find a faction that starts with other letters than f or c. But more than anything, making a line break after each restart does the trick to make things easier to find. It's longish but short enough to fit in the chat history. So it would be cool if this were possible. I'm just going to pretend I don't know why you're strawmaning me (and not Unseelie who asked for the same thing) so you can portray me as selfish, but explain it again for those who still didn't understand it. It's not about what I or anyone else wants for myself/themselves, it's about the experience new people have when they decide whether they enjoy playing the mod or not. I don't want less things mapped because I enjoy mapping things I already know about, I want something that is a minor inconvenience to me, because it will gradually give me more people to play with over time, which I think we can agree is what this community needs the most. It's called a delayed gratification strategy, something that many people here unfortunately have a poor grasp of. Removing parts of the restart maps may be a slight annoyance for vets who create multiple chars all the time, but having everything one needs mapped from the start takes away part of the reward of playing for noobs. Freelancer gameplay is based on character progression, and that's what people want and expect to get when they try out the mod for the first time. Someone who gets the feeling that they advanced their character every time they discover something new will have more fun playing because they continually get small rewards like this simply for flying around. If they get all the map they need from the start, they'll log on and off feeling like they've accomplished nothing, or very little, compared to what they were handed from the start. People who feel like they've accomplished something will be less likely to leave because they know that things will be easier for them now because of what they've accomplished, which they won't want to throw away. Having the map from the start is more convenient, but discovering new things gradually is more rewarding and thereby more gratifying. And seriously, mapping stuff ain't that hard for a vet, and isnt even necessary if they know where everything is already. They also know about the interactive nav map more than noobs do. Mapping stuff you already know about is a very small price to pay in return for making the mod more fun in early gameplay so noobs actually keep playing, considering the development of the server population. I don't think more vets will leave because "omg I have a little less mapped on a new character" than noobs will leave because "meh boring and predictable and I feel I'm accomplishing nothing while playing". Unseelie offered to do work to improve the mod, I'd be willing to assist, and possibly others are willing too. That shouldn't be wasted. I'd be willing to verify and compile restart-related problems that anyone who finds can tell, to add things I find, and gradualy update the restart files. |
