Hi everyone !
I created my account recently, was really lost at first but right as i undocked if found someone ( or rather he found me ) that helped me out finding ore to get started.
I used to play freelancer back in the day when it came out but i only did the solo campaign and let's say it's quite different from what i remember.
I had my first pvp encounter yesterday ! Apologies to the guy i shot without a warning, i thought the fact that he was about to ransom me was enought..
There are still plenty of things i don't quite understand, among those are :
- The windowed mode, i have a multiscreen setup and as soon as i focus another window strange things begin to happen, i sometimes loose my waypoints, there is no more sound and so on. I tried using d3dsomething or dxwnd without success.
- FLCompanion, i don't really get how to use it, some stations aren't listed like the one selling copper in the asteroid field in Kansas. I was used to similar programs with Eve but this one doesn't really give a similar list.
- My "hegemon" ship keeps failing to dock with the little gates when traveling from places to places
- the npc don't do any damages to me so far.
And there's plenty more
A huge thank you to everyone that helped me ! Like the dude who told me i could dock in planets with the thing near the docking ring, i spent a ton of time trying to understand how to do that.
I've made about 100million so far and i'll soon be trying to buy a big transport ship, still haven't really figured out all the details about factions and so on but it'll come.

Welcome! Glad to have you with us! To answer your questions:
1. Windowed mode isn't Freelancer's natural intended display method, so things can get a little wonky at times. I also have multiple displays (three). Sound dropping out whenever the window isn't in focus is normal. I've never lost any waypoints, but I have had situations where I thought the mouse cursor was out of Freelancer, but it wasn't, and I ended up clicking things unintentionally inside the game. This could be the same thing you are experiencing.
2. FL Companion isn't great because a lot of things (for whatever reason) aren't picked up because of Discovery's modifications. I would strongly recommend FLStat instead for finding where things are sold and prices. It isn't quite as easy to identify trade routes as Companion, but the commodities and where they are sold definitely works correctly in FLStat. You may need both at times.
3. The larger the ship, the more it will struggle with trade lanes. This is because the FL engine wasn't designed to deal with ships of that size for players. There's nothing you can really do, except to make sure to adjust your ship to be straight-on to the trade lane ring and as centered as possible before hitting the docking command. That will help. Also, make sure you have some key mapped for all four strafing directions - up, down, left and right. These are a huge time saver to realign yourself with a trade lane when using a large vessel.
4. NPCs are naturally weak to allow pirates to operate without being at risk from basic NPC snub (fighter) ships. However, if you run into an NPC gunboat, cruiser or station, you will definitely find they will do considerable damage. They can spawn randomly as well, and are most common in House space (especially Rheinland for some reason). You can feel pretty confident with NPC fighters not hurting you, though, and this is by design.

Regarding your FLCompanion Problem..
Take a look at this one instead. It's a Version for Discovery Freelancer, instead of the Vanilla Freelancer. It works fine for me, showing all stations (except for POBs, but that's normal), commodities and so on.
