What do you feel is disincentivising you to play discovery freelancer? - Ash - 07-04-2019

Discovery is on a downward turn. That much is clear to everyone.

Now before I go any further, this isn't a thread for you to vent about your gripes, there are plenty of other outlets for you to do that. Instead i'd like to keep this thread focused on the matter at hand and get a clear response from everyone. That way we can get a clear message on what is of most concern to players and staff and hopefully set a stage for a healthy discussion.

There is a stink in the air. Rivalry and cruelty are at an all time high. Nobody seems to be happy and a large number valued community members have turned away from the game recently; be it due to the change in management, development decisions, general toxicity of the community or personal rivalries to name a few reasons.

What i'd like is for everyone: community and staff, to be on the same page with regards to what the key issues are that each party is concerned about. From that, it'd be good to see some recourse. But at the very least we all walk away better informed about the pressures others are under.

Please think twice about which answers you choose - respond truthfully. You may tick as many options as are most applicable to you. Only select options you feel are driving a wedge between you and Discovery Freelancer. If you can live with some of them, leave them unticked.

I think you forgot the part where we can select how satisfied we are.

Patience is a virtue

The only thing that's changed over the last almost 10 years I've played is the names and playercount. People are just as cliquey and just as toxic as they always have been

The mod has changed but the essence remains the same; new mechanics and content, new players and devs, admins... in its essence it remains the same. Somewhat less fun with fewer players and random encounters - it all feels somewhat more artificial but not that much. I've changed in the last 10 years more than this mod, I have less time to spend in-game and in shorter sessions.

FL is at its best when one can sit down and spend 3 hours flying around, playing, RPing in one session without feeling like the time has been wasted. I've lost he patience due to RL and other games such as WoT that cater to short time-span entertainment. Less apparent investmen in terms of time and effort is required for such games but in the end they're infinitely less rewarding while being purposely more addicting. In the end more time is spent to worse ends. That's why I keep coming back to FL and Disco.

But yeah, I think that the main issue is not the mod, not the game, but an ageing playerbase.

Ps: I love you guys, this community. I hope to be here untill the day the server shuts down. God speed and good luck out there. Somewhat drunk and overly emotional, I know, don't mind this bullshit. I do mean it however. Smile

I've got my issues with Discovery, same as everyone else. But all too often, I find people take drama way too damn seriously and tear each other apart over internet spaceships, in the great words of Nen.
We're all here to enjoy ourselves and I don't feel that much has changed in the ten years I've been here. I'd say stuff is less broken now, PvP is more coherent and functional, RP is more grounded, story dev happens faster. I feel there is a lot of great fun to be had, because this is still FL, and the most modern and immersive FL we're going to get.

It's not perfect, but then who is, besides SUPERDUPONT ?

I think it can all be summed to a single point.

Freelancer 4.85 for all intents and purposes was static, unchanging universe (at least as far as the grand story scheme of things). We, the players, focused on personal stories and upholding our factions that played out their roles with little concern that your faction may be deleted or have its pixels taken away no matter how unpopular or outclassed you were either in roleplay or gampleay. Disco, when I joined was a sandbox, an arena to put your characters in more than anything. That's when the mentality of "this is a game, I can die" was quite dominant.

Nowadays devmins give players false sense that their opinions and actions matter and selectively pick what they like and what they don't and you cant ever be so sure what Brilliant Idea ™ may be implemented next. I actually do appreciate the work put into Disco as we got a lot of quality of life upgrades and OF's can adjust diplomacy of even NPC factions in far greater extend (Order was allied to Corsairs is quite notable example) than it was ever possible but 4.85 was by far the least stressful option. It also has LWB.

my biggest problem with the game currently is just how bland it has become. I think that the removal of different snub armours, different snub thrusters and shields was one of the stupidest decisions that has been ever made.

Gee I would have so much to say here but I'm currently trying to write roleplay for something here so if I get into it I'll get angry again and then nothing will happen just like it did last February. Mmmhm.
