A Dangerous Last Call - Jonathan Seabourne - 08-17-2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ABOVE PLANET NEW LONDON, NEW LONDON SYSTEM

Orbital Spa and Cruise, ever grateful to the allied fleets who saved Cortez, was there to do what it could to aid the final stand at New London.

The atmospheric firefight to disable Gallia's planetary bombards saw dozens of fighters engage for the capital world. The Breezewood, too large and delicate for atmospheric flight, was there to raise the spirits of the pilots in their most desperate hour.

"A group of Bretonian government officials wanted to see the battle from above," said Captain Jonathan Seabourne. "And since we would be in the area anyway, I saw no reason not to extend our hospitality to our pilots as they flew once more unto the breach."

The Battleship Macduff, one of the last functioning allied capital ships in orbit, was overwhelmed getting fighters ready for combat, and so hospitality duties fell to the Breezewood, joining the Shetland which is serving as a hospital ship in Newcastle as another OSC liner in service to the war effort. Pilots looking for a few milliliters of liquid courage found the vessel well stocked.

"We gave out whiskey, rum, and even wine. Oddly, no gin, though, as it was mostly the Liberty pilots who took us up on the offer."

When asked if Breezewood was in mortal danger orbiting a planet that had claimed so many large vessels, the captain said, "We weren't a primary target. Both Gallia and Bretonia were down to a single ship that could service their fighters and neither wanted to bring theirs into range of the other. We kept the planet between us and the Gallic fleet, and they wanted to go for the kill planetside rather than risk dying to take out a cruise ship."

"We were close enough we could hear each other's radio chatter, and even trade insults!"

There was one dicey moment, however. A lone Gallic fighter named Asheling decided to challenge the Bretonia capital ship. "Their ship was equipped for atmospheric flight and didn't seem to have the hardware to damage either us or the Macduff," explained Seabourne. "So the pilot hid behind us like a shield. Macduff's autotargetting had trouble registering us in the way, and we ended up taking some 'friendly' shots to the hull."

"It'd have been a hell of an irony to fly through Gallic lines safely only to be shot by our own side."
