For example, I've been trying for the last hour to get onto disco. That's 1 hour, out of roughly 12 hours a week I actually have access to a PC and the time to use it.

yea, this sucks, I've been trying to get online for the past 30 minutes or so, as have several other people I was talking to on xfire, nobody can log on because the server is full -_-

According to FLSTAT discovery has 2,757 active players. 10,554 in total.
And, I can guarantee 90% of the 2757 active players are as excited about 4.85 as I am. That means (does the math) 2481 players battling over 200 slots.
Assuming 200 slots are filled, that leaves 2281 left on the outside. That means I'm in competition with 2280 people across the world for the next slot on the server that opens up.

Thing is, it does not matter how much money we have for the server computer.
It's not the hardware, it's cause of the FLServer program which is antique and doesn't support multi-threading, that is, doesn't support multiple CPU cores.
