It seems like a bug as I just typed in my name and it still said it was taken and my name isnt very common

Well, if you're a Freelancer or Independent Trader, you're limited to 3600 cargo or less, keep that in mind.
I'll try to help out a bit more when you remember which one it was you wanted. Hard to name a ship without a ship to name, you see.
