Rendezvous with Outcast Intelligence - Dieter Schprokets - 02-09-2020

This was as good a place as any to send the transmission.

The Menorca dust cloud spread beneath him, and Wilhelm powered down most of his systems. All the better to remain low profile to most sensors.

He got ready to broadcast on the frequency his contact had provided, using the codes which had cost him even more. The contact had likely already pissed away half that paycheck..

Worth every penny if I can get an audience with the Institute, he thought.

He had needed to mod the radio on his ship to even broadcast on this wavelength. There was nothing standard about it. Then again, there was nothing standard about this trip.

"Alpha Charlie Echo Niner Foxtrot. Looking for a waypoint."

He waited for a response. Nothing but static...

Five minutes, ten....

He sighed, and picked up the mic;

"Alpha Charlie Echo Niner Foxtrot. I'm looking for a waypoint."

His ship was getting cold. He was starting to wonder if the codes and the frequency were a scam...

Three ships, two Sabres and a Falchion, came into view, rising up out of the Menorca cloud. Wilhelm shivered...

"Unknown contact, state your business. And more importantly, tell us how the hell you knew how to reach us, and where you got those codes?"

The accent was Maltese, all right,

Wilhelm took a deep breath. Nothing to worry about, he thought. I'm just a businessman with a proposition. That's all.

"I paid good money to figure out how to reach your people. I just want to talk. Preferably with someone in authority, if that can be arranged."

The three ships surrounded him, and gave clear indication he was being formally intercepted.

"Well, my friend, if you are that, you certainly will be speaking with someone in authority. And soon."

Resigned to whatever happened next, Wilhelm flew with his 'escort' down into the Menorca cloud...

--------------------------------

The station he was in was called "Bastia", at least that's what he had gathered. His escorts were not precisely treating him like a captive, nor as a guest. Wilhelm didn't think they had him characterised at all..

He was in a relatively plain office, and had been for a while. They had brought him a drink, and asked him about his reasons for being there. He had said, for the upteenth time, that he was just here to talk, to discuss possible business with the Institute.

Then a man came.

And sat.

And looked at him for an uncomfortable number of seconds.

Wilhelm spoke first.

"Hello, my name is Wilhelm Von Humboldt. I run a small, 'security company', and I was wondering if we could do business with you. Be your eyes and ears where you don't want it known you have eyes and ears, among other, more 'wet work' tasks. Whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?"

The incident of Menorca Dust Cloud was at first handled by the Agents alone. By default, vessels of non-Maltese origin are shot on sight. But this was an exception as Wilhelm tried to establish a prior communication. His ship confiscated and being checked by local engineers, an older Agent came with a neutral face, observing the man from behind as he was approaching his table and sat down in a classy suit.

His table, devoid of any personal things except a computer and some papers with pencils, it was apparent this man doesn't reveal anything personal about himself. The thought can be further reinforced by his look over the "visitor" and then checking his digital clocks with analog representation of time nonchalantly but without making anyone feel arrogance. It was more about testing the reactions of the newcomer.

Shortly trimmed white hair on sides and blue eyes, the man looked at his computer screen and started writing down something. The IRMM is a secretive faction that does not share information with outsiders unless necessary.

"I'm an Agent of the IRMM intelligence corps. We run this station and control this system. My name isn't important as of right now and before I tell you anything, I'd would like to see your reputation sheet with Maltese."
