Ask Discovery: Should Synth Foods remove credential numbers based convention and use geographical places instead? - SimonBlack - 03-12-2009

I have been always trying to improve Synth Foods and I need community's opinon on this matter.

Synth Foods has the following naming convention: Synth.Foods-Convoy|*** ,where "***" stands for a number. For example: Synth.Foods-Convoy|313

It has been like that because Synth Foods is not a house specific corproation, even though it originates from Liberty. I thought that its internationality wouldnt give us right to name it by USA's geographical places, towns and cities, because we are based from other houses too, hence the numbers were implented, much like RepEx have their own. Though, Im starting to think that its the naming convention that scares away potential recruits, because it looks dull. People want to be exceptionary, I suppose. Perhaps?

Though naming transports by cities would kill us a little inside. Naming transports by USA cities and towns would make us strictly Libertonian corproation which is largely untrue. We could then perhaps name convoys by USA and Rheinland's towns, but then Kusari and Bretonia seems to be leeped out the loop (and we do have Bretonia based employees). Having Rheinlandish names and not having, say Bretonian names wouldnt be right either. Im also worried that characters count may not be enough as well. The names may be too long. What is the length of the naming convention? Perhaps we should rename us to SF|*nameplace* or drop the "convoy" part: Synth.Foods-*nameplace* or Synth.Foods|*nameplace*

So what do you think. Should we keep numbers or change to names of regions. What house names, precisely? Only Libery or other ones too? How should the naming convention look? Base your opinions and vote, of course.

I'd like you to say something about other ideas that I had too. We only had employee of the month implented so far.

Quote:I also have another idea. Hiring Freelancers. A freelancer could apply for a job. He would become an official escort and possibly hunter for Synth Foods. No ID, tag changes required. The freelancer would escort Synth Foods convoy whenever possible and give more attention to our bounty board than your average bounties. That freelancer could be paid, say 300,000 credits every month. Monthly wage, pretty cool, huh? It woud be limited to fighters and bombers. Said Freelancers would work for us after contract is signed.

Also, what about Trainee account? Some kind of transport ship for our newest employees to fly as part of the training program. Would it work? Or flying shared account before you can set up your own will most likely think people twice about joining? Your opinions pwease.

I think using City/Land feature names is a far better idea than using numbers. Numbers on ships are, simply put, boring. People aren't attracted to them.

As to which ... I honestly have no idea.
Maybe just important places, like Geneva for example?

Being an LWB, I support the growth of Synth Foods as a player faction. I would say I found the number thing a little bland, but basically my problem with it is I can never remember who's who. Have I met 725 before? Who knows!

If you don't want house city-names, you could name them after just little islands or something non-specific, or better yet, something to do with food. Food producing regions, or famous foods or famous chefs or something. hah. I would love to pirate a transport called The Camembert.

I'd say yes. While the number thing, as RepEx uses it, adds to the faction's identity, it detracts from the character's. I, for one, only know for sure which one is Groteck's (RepEx 868) ship. I have absolutely no idea who the rest of them are. Also, the numbers are something of a RepEx thing (at least that's my take on it, since I've been here for a long time), so, in other cases (as SF), it doesn't even add that much to the faction's identity.

So, yes, let them ships have more meaningful names.

I have to agree with the LWB - while it's easy enough for us to learn who's who and recognize the numbers, it makes it duller for the rest.

I voted yes, but it should perhaps be other; as long as it gives good names I don't care about the theme. Food makes for a silly theme (and y'all know how much I like silly...)

Synth.Foods-Gastronomy
Synth.Foods-Canteloupe
Synth.Foods-Stir.Fried

heh

I say go for the names instead of numbers.

In fact, the only thing that is stopping me from joining RepEx is a naming convention like this.

I much prefer names - what about Disco geography instead of cities though? I named my Samura transport after the cloud he always flew through - that would also make sure it could be general across houses.

In any case, the problem with numbers is I always get them confused and then end up interacting a lot less because I'm not sure if I've met that person before or not. There's some logic to it rp-wise but overall I think it's detrimental if anything.

And where does FL get its names form?

I think he meant using only the specific names already used in FL.

As I stated in this report I have always thought of my ships as being named even though they are designated by convoy number. Even when I switched from the old Large Transport into a Train I gave the Train a new name while the number stayed the same.

I like the idea of a switch over to something like Synth.Foods|Trinity
The number of characters in a name is limited to 23 I think so that would make longer place names somewhat difficult. I still want to keep Synth.Foods as part of the name though so that both our friends and our enemies can readily recognize us as Synth.
Seeing something like SFS-Trinity might look like just another independent trader name.

Well need to keep a fairly tight reign on the names though. I dont want to see Synth.Foods|WillyWonka flying around and making us look like a joke.
