Science Division: Research and Development - Order Overwatch - 03-18-2020 ⧫ Order Overwatch Research and Development ⧫ Alexandria Research Station & Damascus Research Station ⧫ Date: [REDACTED] ⧫ ENCRYPTION: Classified[V] Research and Development
Under order of the Grand Admiral of the Order Overwatch the Science Division has started developing
state of the art technology in an arms race against the Nomads, who’s technological advantage is one of the key factors of their ever growing threat to humanity. Successfully completed projects are safely archived here for review and, if so desired, production by the Overwatch. With the Nomad threat constantly increasing in greater numbers and larger ships,
the need of significant sustained damage quickly became obvious. Unfortunately conventional weaponry was deemed unsuitable to meet these extreme needs, simply lacking the raw damage output needed to take down heavier Nomad vessels in a satisfactory manner. In order to meet this new demand, the Orders finest researchers went to work to design a new weapon with unparalleled firepower. One of the advantages the Order had when it came to maintaining and developing technology was that its members came from all over Sirius. In this case, former Rheinland scientists came to the rescue with a design that was somewhat similar to the Rheinland style; a heavy, draining weapon with immense damage output. A powersource had to be selected, even with the expertise of the former Rheinland scientists the Order simply lacked the supply of Mox the scientists were used to work with. After much deliberation the choice was eventually made to use Azurite gas to power the weapons. Not only was Azurite gas more plentiful in the Omicrons, it was also far more potent and long lasting than the limited supply of Mox would have allowed. Harnessing the Azurite gas in a safe manner, let alone weaponizing it, proved to be a challenging endeavor. A similar approach to plasma weaponry was taken, the theory was similar enough in principle. However due to the sustainable nature of Azurite gas a proper venting system had to be developed to avoid overcharging the weapon in a near infinite loop with potential disastrous consequences were it to happen. Eventually it was decided that the best way to facilitate this was to redirect this energy generation through the gun, firing the built up energy into space to prevent it from building up further inside the weapon. Not only did this remove the risk of a potential overload, it also greatly simplified the manner in which the prototype could meet the projected damage output that was expected of it. Due to the sheer size of the heavier Nomad vessels, certain compromises could be made in the weapons design that would normally have been unacceptable on Order vessels. As a result, the refire rate, projectile speed and energy drain of the prototype suffered significantly but the vast amount of firepower, lived up to their Rheinland design. The prototype was deemed Golanski's Hammer, named after the current Grand Admiral of the Order Overwatch. Unfortunately due to the rare materials required to construct these weapons it is unlikely these prototypes will be fielded en masse, restricting their use only to specially selected vessels within the Black fleet. Since its inception the Order has specialized in state of the art tech that pushes the boundries of what humanity has used,
their unique access and understanding of the rare and highly sought after resources of the Omicrons allowing them to develop this tech. Unfortunately in recent years access to these resources has not been as uncontested as it once was, ambitious Zoners, the Core and even an increase in Nomad activity have all pressed on the Orders ability to obtain the rare materials it needs for its most advanced weaponry and technology. In order to counter this growing issue, a team of researchers within the Orders science division were tasked to come up with a powerful weapon that could rival the Orders conventional weapons without relying on these materials or adapted Nomad technology. The scientists, somewhat distraught they had to basically reinvent the wheel, started by studying the more primitive weapons of old. Ancient archives of weapons long become obsolete with the advent of shields and energy weapons provided little insight, until they came across one particular design that might have promise: the gauss cannon. By using the electromagnets inside of a series of coils to speed up an object to such extremes it was possible for an old fashioned projectile to have enough felocity so it could inflict satisfactory damage to a vessels shields. If it were to strike an unshield target, it would likely even be able to do significantly more damage then the Orders conventional weapons. The first prototype was built using a combination of conventional metal alloys. Unfortunately however it quickly turned out the velocity of the projectile while too strong, resulting in the prototype being destroyed after a single shot. In order to compensate for this the design was augmented with Iridium plating. This meant that the original goal of the project; finding a suitable weapon that didn't rely on the rare materials of the Omicron systems, was a failure. On the plus side, the Order had a new, albeit primitive weapon that proved greatly efficient in field tests. Due to the old design of the prototype it was deemed Orillions Strike, in honor of founder and very first leader of the Order. While the Order is limited in its ability to produce these prototypes due to the same reliance on resources found in the Omicrons that resulted in the project being started in the first place, the Overwatch still considers the project a success thanks to the performance of the weapon. With the rise in Nomad activity reaching dangerous peaks it became clear that
the Order needed to further improve the coordination of their fleets in combat scenario's. Too often would fire be divided across several targets which led to unneeded losses. In the heat of battle, miscommunication and misdirection meant death. And unlike the rest of Sirius, the Order couldn't rely on their enemy having colorful shipnames and designations for them to target and coordinate around. The Nomads, as far as was known, didn't even distinguish individual beings within their hivemind. To counter this glaring weakness the science division of the Order was tasked with not only coming up with a way to ensure all heavy assets concentrated all their firepower on the same vessel when dealing with the Nomads, but also to ensure no time or energy was wasted while doing so. After much internal debate and several scrapped ideas the researchers came to a conclusion: they would build a prototype weapon that would stand out even in the chaos of the battlefield, capeable of firing at a rapid pace and pepper the target in a barrage of EMP blasts to soften it up so the rest of the fleet could then finish off the vulnerable target. In order to ensure the prototype would be able to sustain constant usage without draining the vessels powercore it was opted to design it for battleship class vessels, making use of their already vast powercore while fueling it with Azurite gas to ensure a small drain. Initial tests proved the weapon was as potent a shieldbreaker as was hoped, however the projectiles were not as visible as the intent had been, as a result Order vessels might still overlook the shots being fired and misidentify their targets. In order to counteract this the science division developed a special lens within the prototype that altered the ion pulses' color, magnifying its brightness significantly. Pleased with the new results, the scientists deemed the prototype Hunters Mark, named after Admiral Jeremy Hunter and his performances during fleet manouvers. Due to the dependancy on Azurite gas to make the weapon function properly the Order is unable to mass produce these prototypes, generally reserving them only for flagships that will lead their fellow agents into battle or other similarly high value assets. With the limited resources at the Orders disposal,
it became ever important to defend active assets in an effective manner. The prized ship of the Order, the Osiris class battleship, proved vulnerable without an escort to Core and Nomad bombers, limiting its fielding options. Battleship weapons proved too sluggish in both refire rate and projectile speed to handle these vessels, forcing to rely on escorts to keep it safe from such threats. Determined to address this weakness, Admiral Linnea Holt tasked the Science Division with developing a new type of weapon that would be able to beat these odds and take down bombers in a swift manner. The Science Division got to work on two projects, one deemed Project Nymeria's Shield, and the other using the Solaris battleship turret design as a starting template. Of all weaponry available to them, this type of turret was currently closest to being able to take down bombers. That said, it simply wasn’t fast enough to counter an experienced pilot. The renewed design was simple enough, by sacrificing some damage per shot as well as increasing the power output, they would be able to increase the refire rate by over 50%. The barrel of the turrets were designed so that the accuracy would remain reliable With their plan made the next step was producing a functional prototype. While the damage output was low enough compared to other Battleship class weapons, making reinforcing it with Iridium unnecessary on first glance. Initial testing however proved that the significant power that constantly surged through the barrels were taking a toll, prompting the Science Division to reinforce them with Iridium after all. After several months of work the first prototypes finished field testing and were ready to be used properly. Unfortunately due to the Iridium required in the production of these weapons the Order can only afford to produce these weapons in small numbers at a time so as to not endanger their other production capabilities. Developed simultaneously with Project Holts Wrath as an alternative
method to defend Osiris class battleships from bomber swarms. Whereas Holts Wrath focused on increasing the ability of an Osiris to deal large amounts of precise damage in rapid succession to incoming bombers. Project Nymeria’s Shield instead focused on deflecting incoming projectiles while also softening up the enemy bombers so they’d be easier to take down for escorts. With this approach, smaller escort wings would be required which in turn frees up more assets. In order to realize this, the Science Division examined what defensive options were currently present and proved to be effective, most noticeably; flak cannons. Flak cannons in general were plenty effective at deflecting incoming shots, and debris to use is plentiful in the Omicrons, unfortunately however they had little other benefit. In order to optimize the flak cannons utility the Science Division started experimenting with ionizing the shrapnel prior to firing the shots. This concept brought some complications with it; ionizing the shrapnel in a manner that wouldn’t affect ship performance alone required significant effort, everything from providing a significantly isolating material to introducing and maintaining the current in the shrapnel long enough to actually fire it off while still maintaining its potency against its target, was closely examined and tested. Eventually, several weeks after Project Holts Wrath finished, the first successful prototype was finished and passed field testing. All the effectiveness of the original flak cannons was preserved at the cost of a slight increase in power requirement. In return however, not only did the shots deflect incoming projectiles, they were also able of ripping shield bubbles to shreds thanks to the ionized charge the shrapnel carried. Of the two projects, Project Nymeria’s Shield is more defense focused but harder to reproduce. While it does not rely on dangerous to obtain materials like Iridium, the specific materials needed to ensure the ionized shrapnel doesn’t affect the Osiris itself is relatively just has hard to come by and cannot be found within the Omicrons. Developed by the Science Division on request of the Overwatch to create a weapon
capable of delivering significant damage at a long range. The project was retroactively named to honor the Major who tested the prototypes and managed to destroy an Ish’tar class vessel while doing so. This project served as yet another endeavor to keep the Osiris class battleships out of the immediate threat range of the Nomad Ish’tars. During the first few skirmishes with Ish’tars it quickly became apparent that approaching the vessels head on was simply too dangerous a tactic due to the heavy frontal firing power the Nomad vessels possessed. Alternative tactics only proved to be partly effective as the weapons available simply lacked the ability to properly punish the Nomad vessels consistently while performing evasive maneuvers. In order to maximize the weapons damage output the decision was made to rely on Azurite Gas. Azurite, while difficult to obtain, was available in the Omicrons and uniquely suited to power weaponry without risking it running out on the short term. Additionally, the reliable surges of power would be able to be used to extend the range significantly compared to more conventional weaponry. Unfortunately relying on such a power output would provide a large amount of strain on the integrity of the gun itself, requiring additional reinforcement in order to keep it from exploding under its own force. Iridium was chosen for its unparalleled sturdiness, enforcing the turrets to withstand the constant surges of energy that erupted from their barrels. Due to this weapon being the first developed by the Overwatch to depend on both Azurite Gas and Iridium it is among the most difficult to manufacture, the results however are unparalleled. RE: Science Division: Research and Development - Order Overwatch - 05-01-2020 ⧫ Project Blacknight ⧫ Damascus Research Station ⧫ 20:04 Sirius Time. ⧫ ENCRYPTION: Classified[V] Project Blacknight
Developed by the Science Division on request of the secret Wedjat subdivision of the Overwatch to
create a weapon capable of pressuring smaller capital class vessels with a constant barrage of precise shots. Battleship class weaponry, traditionally, was far too sluggish to properly punish more mobile vessels. Using Project Holts Wrath as a starting point the Science Division set out to upscale it’s damage output. While Holts Wrath was excellently suited for taking down hypermobile crafts like snub vessels, they needed something with a bit more power to take down larger crafts such as gunboats. By sacrificing a significant amount of refire rate and range, the Science Division was able to modify the turrets to pack more of a punch while still maintaining a faster refire rate and projectile speed than traditional battleship class weapons. This endeavor ended up more complicated than originally thought, as much of Project Holts Wrath design had been specifically done in order to promote its performance against snub vessels. Simply upscaling the weapon proved ineffective, resulting in several early stage prototypes exploding when maintaining a constant barrage. Eventually the Science Division managed to overcome this hurdle by making adjustments to the energy calibrations. This, alongside several other changes, resulted in a few functioning prototypes that were ready for field testing. Project Blacknight proved effective during field testing, raining down rapid fire. Overall the prototype was comparable to a more energy consuming, stronger and faster version of standard primary battleship turrets. A particularly unique benefit of the new calibration was that, unlike conventional weapons that specialized in either taking down shields or a vessels hull and were weaker against the other, Project Blacknight seemed to maintain most of its effectiveness against both. Field testing proved the weapons were efficient on any class of vessel up to gunboats, even going so far as reaching satisfactory performance against cruisers. While not as effective as Project Holts Wrath against snub vessels, it maintained enough efficiency to be considered a moderate improvement over all thanks to its increased utility. Due to the iridium required in the production of these weapons, as well as the uncommon modifications that need to be made to make them safe to use, Project Blacknight is not commonly available to the Order and requires dedicated teams to produce them in small time consuming projects. While the majority of the Orders forces was focused on fighting off the alien threat of the Nomads,
the Core seized the opportunity to try and encroach on the Order protectorate more and more. With the Core nipping at their heels it and Order patrols stumbling upon illegal outposts inside territory they had previously considered secure, it became all too clear something had to be done. While the Science Division had developed a variety of potent and unique weapons up until this point, these were made with moving vessels in mind. Considering the sturdiness of human installations, as well as their lack of mobility, the decision was made that it would be acceptable to make certain sacrifices to boost performance. One of the major driving factors behind any weapon was the speed of the projectiles it fired; a faster moving projectile had far greater odds of connecting with its target. Damage output and refire rate were often held back in order to ensure a weapon was capable of actually connecting a blow. However, with the target the Overwatch had in mind this did not factor into the equation at all as there was no chance of missing shots. By rerouting a good chunk of the energy spared in this manner to sheer damage output, the Science Division was able to produce a weapon of unrelenting force. This trade off did however meant that each shot traveled through space at an alarmingly slow pace even if it decimated the targets hull integrity upon eventual impact in an unprecedented manner. The prototype was deemed Storgens Judgement, named after Major William Storgen of the Overwatch who had spearheaded several operations to take down Core installations in the Order Protectorate. Due to the large force behind each shot the turrets are reinforced by extra iridium to prevent the weapons from being ripped to shreds under the pressure of their own force, this has resulted in the Order only being able to produce small batches of these weapons at a time while they gather the resources required for such potent weapons. When faced with opposition with superior firepower time and time again the Order
once more turned to the Science Division to find a solution to the problem. As the Order lacked the capability to construct larger warships in any reliable, steady fashion, it seemed most beneficial to instead focus on improving what was currently available. Capital Ship Armor Upgrades were a widely available product throughout Sirius, with different degrees of potency. While these often performed well the Science Division felt like it could squeeze out just a bit more effectiveness with the cutting edge technology they had available to them thanks to studying the Nomads and their creators. Thus the Science Division set out to create a Capital Ship Armor Upgrade that exceeded the commonly referred to CAU VIII tier Armor Upgrade. While most detaills regarding the research and execution of this project, let alone the process to produce the end result are deemed highly classified given the involvement of alien tech, they were eventually successful in their endeavor. The new armor stood up to significantly more firepower than the CAU VIII design it would inevitably be compared to, boasting an average of 25 percent increased toughness when confronted with weaponry currently known to the Order. This new design was named Fischers Resolve, in honor of an ambitious Commander within the Orders ranks. Extensive testing proved that the armor would degrade in roughly a months time; an unfortunate side effect of the secretive process the armor underwent during production to give it its increased toughness in the first place. Still despite this setback the project was considered a success. With Fischers Resolve the light capital ships that the Order fielded would be able to withstand greater hardships and hopefully manage to return to base safely should they be forced to retreat. Unfortunately due to the complicated nature of the production process and the sensitivity of the technology used in the process itself, the Order is unable to produce these armor upgrades in large numbers at a time. The ones that do eventually degenerate, as such their production is mostly limited to prior important missions in which every single edge counts. |
